Semi-outsider, but from watching, I think aMSa is at the point where he as at the level outside of the top 5/6, with the people who typically do well and can take matches/sets off of the top players
The weird thing though is that he apparently doesn't win/do that well in Japan.

edit:

also, just to actually add something, I'm going to my first tournament this month and I'm scared. I'll get destroyed (mayhem in socal lol) but I know it'll be worth it.

Don't be scared. Everyone gets destroyed at their first bunch of tournaments. Best thing to do is try to play as many friendlies as possible. Try to "get next" on every setup you can. If you don't speak up, dudes will just hog the TV forever.

I can definitely agree with this. He's Axe/PewPewU/Colbol/Westballz level for sure. The really scary thing about his Apex 2015 play though is that he definitely "retired" after EVO last year for school only to come back and look even better than he did before taking that break.

Yeah, that was the scariest part to me. The fact that he improved after "retiring" is insane.

HE PLAYS YOSHI

I don't think Amsa's rate of growth is comparable to anything, even the goat.
The Godslayer era is too real, Amsa is going to become more and more insane in the future.

On another note, I'm able to play Melee netplay again by sacrificing my analog triggers RiP lightshielding, as If I needed more handicaps to get rekt on.

P.S. hows that thread comin along huehue

You think Palutena is that bad?

Note that I actually moved Palutena up from where she is in Dabuz's list.

But yeah, she's bad. She becomes a totally different beast with customs on, though. Her extra mobility options + an unblockable projectile make her a force to be reckoned with.

Getting there. I'm also juggling midterms right now.

Should be up within a week.

Also, Mango said on his stream earlier today that he thinks Marth is the best character in the game. M2K thinks Falco is the best. Interesting.

I can see both honestly. The top 3 are super close

Yeah I wouldn't consider either character better than Fox, but they are both much better players than I am so I'm open to hear more.

The top 3 fighting for the crown of best character is highly debatable only really due to player capability. I think it's undisputed that Fox while being super strong and used well all around is still far from being used to perfection, it's this theory/reality gap that pulls Fox away from the throne.

Those top three all have great tools for what's needed in melee, great spacing tools for neutral and more importantly coverage, but also all have the tools to have zero-to-deaths built into their capability. Honestly, although PeePee decided against it I think Falco does edge ahead of Fox for now, until Fox player floor/ceiling grows, Falco forces his will onto you whether it be via lasers pressure and projectile spacing, or forcing you to tech and limit options with his tools and his dair, and he can do this to pretty much any character.

New z-powershielding tech found.

It turns out this actually gives you more shield stun than the regular powershield, so you don't want to always do it for attacks, just for reflecting projectiles.

You can actually powershield things that you couldn't have otherwise.

I feel like I'm going to be playing so much catchup to get my Marth to the same level of technicality he had in Project M. That new Z-powershielding stuff is nuts though. Thought as much when the thread got linked on GAF somewhere last week.

You see, even though I could definitely say that I'm one of the bigger Smash heads on GAF at current, I don't think I could ever challenge Anth0ny's dedication and passion. Good shit so far. Can't wait to chat it up with Melee-GAF. I need to get back in touch with 4-GAF while I'm at it.

I have another suggestion for the melee OP (if you still accept those)…

We all know that you can’t configure the controls of your gamecube controller in super smash bros melee. Still, in melee, most of the time, there’s more than one way of doing each action. Moreover, sometimes, to a new player, it may seem that it doesn’t matter to do one action with one button or the other, as it seems that you are doing the same with both, when, in reality, it matters. Personally, I think that one of the first things that should be explained to someone new to melee (keep in mind that, when talking about people new to melee, i don’t only mean people that go to tournaments), is the different uses that each button has and how each button can trigger different actions depending on the situation. In fact, I feel that this tends to be overlooked as, compared to most games, melee is rather complex in this regard. You may not be able to configure the controls, but you definitely have options. No matter where a new player looks up on the internet, they will probably learn about L-cancelling, wave dashing, wave landing, dash dancing… before learning that some buttons like the C-stick or the “z” button have a lot more uses than what they thought:

Example 1, the C-stick: new players know that the C-stick can be used for doing smash attacks and, because is something that is mentioned quite often, they may also be aware of the benefits of using the c-stick for doing aerials (you can do fair and bair without affecting your momentum, uair without double jumping, and dair without fast falling) but they may not know that there’s some situations where both the analog stick and the C-stick have similar uses:

- when you are on your shield, everyone knows that you can do 3 actions with the analog stick: jumps out of shield with up, roll with right or left, or spot dodge with down. Before learning about competitive melee, most players probably used the analog stick when they were on their shield. And once they have learned about competitive melee, some will continue to use the analog stick. Why? Well, like I said before, it’s actually a lot easier to read/watch about things like L-cancelling and wave dashing than it is to find an in deep explanation about the different uses of each button. So, many people that have played melee in the past won’t be aware that you can use the C-stick for moving out of your shield and, if they are, they will probably think “oh, it’s the same thing. Neat, but i’m used to using the analog stick, so i’ll continue using that”. As we all know, it’s actually crucial to use the C-stick instead as, unlike the analog stick, it buffers the action and allow you to do it as soon as you are no longer in shield stun. Instead of mashing the analog stick for rolling, what a new player would need to learn is to hold the C-stick in the desired direction.

- grabbing the ledge, this one is actually a good example of how what you can do with each button changes a lot: you can roll with the “R” trigger, the “L” trigger, or moving the C-stick towards the stage; normal get up moving the analog stick towards the stage; ledge attack pressing “a”, “b”, “z” or moving the C-stick up; jumping moving the analog stick up, pressing “x” or “y”; fast falling moving the analog stick down; dropping the ledge without fast falling moving the analog stick backwards, moving the C-stick backwards or moving the C-stick down.

- when you are grabbing someone you can hit them with “a” or “z” and you can throw them in 4 directions both with the analog stick and the C-stick.

- the C-stick is also important for DI in combination with the analog stick…

… etc

Example 2, the “z” button: new players know that the “z” button can be used to grab. They may not be aware of some of it’s uses. In many situations it acts like the “a” button:

- it allows you to charge the smash attack that you performed with the C-stick.

- it can be used for doing aerials. It can be especially useful for doing your nair.

- it can be used for L- cancelling.

- for doing your get up attack

- for hitting people after grabbing them

… etc

I’m not trying to make a list of every use of each button or anything like that :p I just wanted to comment on this aspect of melee because I thought that it would help new player if you, Anth0ny, could talk/mention it in the OP, or give a link to somewhere where it is explained…

So… do you think that it would be appropriate to mention this aspect of melee in the OP?

^Good suggestion. I mentioned both of those things :)

Thread should be up today. Just polishing it up now.

Also keep in mind, the OP isn't set in stone. So if anyone thinks of anything cool/helpful after the thread goes up, I have no problem adding it to the OP. This isn't a college paper or something, it's video games. We don't have a due date and we aren't getting marked :)

though if the requirement was 5000 words, I'd be in there

Honestly, I'm looking forward to it. Socal is so freaking stacked though it's going to be intimidating. Throwing into the fire is always the best way to start at least.

Can't wait for the melee OT

I really should go to Mayhem if I want to get back into Melee. With no SSS right now, it's the easiest option.
