Bloodborne gameplay : The first 18 minutes

Yeah, I'll agree the game's IQ is looking a bit rough, hopefully it'll be better by the time it comes out and even if it's not, I won't deny myself from playing this beauty of a Souls game.

The game's IQ has looked questionable to me from the very start, and in all the footage so far. Especially the aliasing/shimmering. Is it that much worse in this latest video?

I just find it surprising that people seemingly haven't noticed it until now.

It's notable because of how much more worse it looks than before.

This must some super fucking ancient build they've decided to let IGN plaster on their website :/

Dark Souls 2 on PC has spoiled me. It will be hard to play this without 60FPS, although I'm sure I'll still enjoy it.

It takes me about 15 min to adjust going from 60 to 30 (and vice versa).

IQ is my biggest concern right now.

Looks like more of the same. Depending on where you stand with its predecessors that can be a good or bad thing. As I'm clearly outnumbered I'll keep my criticisms to myself. Won't be picking this up though lol. I've tried to get into these games. I really have. "YOU DIED" less than three minutes in? Nah breh.

Maybe you're not being serious, but you realize he had no weapons, right?

I can't comprehend the people complaining about visuals. It is such a rare treat to get a game with aesthetic so cohesive and intricate, but we talk about IQ and framerate? Are we robots? I mean to each his own, I just personally can't even imagine technicalities entering my head after seeing that display of beauty.

I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting better IQ and a good framerate to go along with what is already stellar art direction. It wouldn't be a Souls game thread without the back and forth on these subjects. The art direction is absolutely stunning though. Not sure how i feel about the enemies talking as you'll end up hearing them say the same things a few thousand times it may get old. No matter what everyone knows they are in for a great game.

You'd think this were an N64 game the way some people are talking...

I mean maybe it does and I'm not looking closely enough, it's just so far beyond anything that would occur to me to think about after seeing something so lovely. More of a personal observation, really.

It's crazy how low the gameplay:graphics comment ratio is for unreleased games these days.

yeah... I was just thinking this and remembering when Demon's Souls was coming out, as an example. people were so excited about all the gameplay elements that the graphics talk was mostly, "yeah it looks kind of dark and dingy, but the art looks cool."

now it seems tons of people seem to get joy out of overanalyzing (and sometimes tearing down) games for any graphical imperfections. maybe it's because we're oversaturated with prerelease vids/screens now, maybe everyone envisions themselves as an armchair coder/developer... I don't know. but considering how expensive AAA games are getting because of ridiculous graphical standards and how few and far between unique AAA games like Bloodborne are, you'd think people would focus more on other things aside from poor AA or whatever. sometimes I think a good chunk of the gaming community is unintentionally pushing us toward a future of 4-5 AAA graphical powerhouses a year from only the biggest developers.

Nope, looks about the same as the Alpha. Does not look worse.

You and me both. I even saw someone claim the artwork has been tarnished. I could see all the artwork and environment detail just fine, even in the crappy youtube player. But maybe I just have superhuman vision, I guess I'll never know.

Whatever, I'm not going to post anymore regarding this topic. There's no changing anyone's mind. I someone would rather freak out over minuscule things, so be it. I think there are far more interesting things to talk about in this video.

.

Really? I'll have to watch this when I get home then. That's disappointing though, I wonder if the downgrade happened because of framerate issues.

If anyone has some comparison shots from this video to the previous footage we've seen I'd be interested.

looks about the same to me. if you had no qualms in earlier previews, you won't have much to cry about here.

The intro cutscene is interesting.
The doctor saying that whatever happens next may be a bad dream, and the surreal nature of the Dream Refuge. Is there going to be some sort of plot twist? Is this why the Yharnam enemies refer to the player as a beast? Is the player a beast and doesn't realize it? Is it March 24th yet? I can't stop thinking about it.

Not sure if anyone has done this, but did some timestamps with spoiler tags that some might find helpful:

0:14 to 1:57 ; First in-game cutscene.

1:58 to 3:04 ; Starting area
Iosefka's Clinic

3:05 to 5:22 ;
Dream Refuge
hub area where displaying stat menu and starting gear are displayed Also shows fast travel.

3:23 to 6:05 ; Return to starting area and demonstrating the Blood Transfusion mechanic (how to get resources back that were lost on death).

6:06 to 7:08 ; Central Yharnam, the area featured in all the trailers and alpha. Some combat.

7:09 to 8:03 ; How to activate fast travel points and first in-game dialogue

8:04 to 12:48 ; More general C.Yharnam gameplay. Bell toll event present. Good mixture of enemies, though nothing new. In fact, there are no new enemies throughout the footage.

12:49 to 13:23 ; Second dialogue and first with
a physical NPC that looks to be a Hunter
, as well as a specific item acquirement.

13:24 to 13:36 ; Combat with beast hounds

13:37 to 13:49 ; Third in-game dialogue

13:50 to 15:04 ; More regular gameplay and unlocking of a shortcut near a fast travel point.

15:05 to 16:39 ; Fast travel back to
Hunter's Dream
and meet
Gavin(?)
. First look at the Workshop where you can fortify and repair weapons.

16:40 to 17:35 ; More C.Yharnam gameplay. Spot some larger enemies and bloated crows that have been shown off before.

17:36 to 19:05 ; Cleric Beast boss battle

Keep in mind there looks to be some editing, namely between 8:04 and 12:48. Also whoever is playing is skipping a lot, both areas of the map and combat opportunities.

Alright, I'm getting conflicting reports.

Someone else just said it looks noticeably worse -_-

Damnit I need to watch it for myself.

I still say it's strange that I don't recall anyone complaining this much about the visuals every other time we got new footage, but for some reason this video there's quite a few up in arms. Makes me think it has to look worse.

Nobody cared about demon souls till well after it was released. This game is getting the triple AAA treatment now by both Sony and gamers.

Watch it. Just skip to the midway point and it is the same area as the beta, just different time of day.

I play these games for the art and exploration aspect. Art gets ruined by shit IQ.

OT: Looks even easier than DS2 was. Still can't wait.
lmao. that's not the case here at all, it looked quite good. and that's not even the case with souls games in general, if anything, criticize what they really lack, which is decent FPS. (or just play Dark Souls on PC)

also "hey tutorial-first area of the game looks easy, damn!" - not to mention that he skipped most of the harder mobs and he didn't even take 1/10 of the boss HP.

A few of us have spotted this in the thread so far :D

FROM loves a bit of Berserk. I'm wondering if it's got anything to do with the Arcane stat.

[edit] or shiiiiiet, there was chatter of becoming a beast and being hunted in the game. Maybe an allusion to the brand attracting bad guys like the sacrificial brand attracts apostles/spirits?

not true. I preordered it and a PS3 months before it came out in NA. I definitely wasn't alone.

but you're probably right. it was sad to see DS2 get exposed to the "AAA treatment," and it's sad to see the same thing for Bloodborne. I'm glad it goes hand in hand with more success for From; that's the only positive.

The Order: 1866 should be the bare minimum standard in visual quality for PS4 games going forward.

I doubt there will be too many games that look as good as the Order. Expecting that level of fidelity from every game is setting yourself up for a very long and disappointing console cycle.

No, but the dev team have regular characters/voice actors/mechanics they used in DE and Dark souls, like Patches (and npc who hates priests),Crestfallen Warrior (NPC), Sorcery Spells (In all games) and used the same VA for the same NPC in DS1 and DS2.

Still it needs a real confirmation anyway.
I don't know, it was leaked that an npc says
UMBASA
so it might be set in the same universe as Demon's.

Watched all of it. Not impressed. Not hype. Never played a Soul game before. This just looks like a hack and slash with hard difficulty for no real reason. Maybe I'm overlooking something.

A lot of the appeal for me comes from the series' thick atmosphere and sense of tension, neither of which come across well in videos imo.

Strange that there is no opening CG intro. Did IGN just cut that out?

Likely yes if they were even shown it. I'm not sure if again Yharnam is all IGN is working with in this early footage, but with them cutting the character build it wouldn't surprise me that some other things were out in order to stretch content throughout the month.

It may even be its own trailer, which iirc was what they did with Dark Souls when showing off why the world was in the state it was in the game.

Edit: Think the same with Dark Souls 2 too, or at least it was released on its own before the game came out.

edit: nvm, beaten. :^

Yea I really don't get that feeling from the video. Hopefully the rest of the month will show that sense of tension and atmosphere.

You are. Demon's Souls / Dark Souls 1 & 2.

I have detected what you are overlooking:

I don't think it is a fair argument to say that just because a person hasn't played previous series that they aren't able to critique a game for what looks like a shallow presentation. Purely talking about how it is being presented not the actual game. I would hope this game is amazing and adds a lot of revenue to the developers so they can continue making a popular game. I know some of you guys are talking light hearted though.

But that is what you are missing.....knowledge of the previous entries and what makes people keep coming back for more. You can call it a simple hack n slash on hard, but that doesn't make it all it is.

As someone who has never played a Souls game, this footage doesnt really do anything to make me want to jump in on BB. Looks kinda meh.

Bloodborne: The First 18 Minutes

Did you make it to the end for Cleric Beast fight? Not every game is for everyone though so play what you enjoy.
