PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Same line of thinking that makes me want to play on original hardware. call it nostalgia or whatever you will, but that's the deal.

But it would run the game exactly identical to the original system, it's just a matter of getting the console to allow it to execute, which you would need to use the ESR Disc Patcher to do. It much more cost-effective than buying an original system, with the same outcome.

Remember Samurai Legend Musashi?

I didn't think the game was completely terrible, but Brave Fencer still remains one of my favourite games ever, so this thing as a long awaited follow up was very disappointing.
My copy of Brave Fencer came today. Nice timing.

I appreciate this, but it's less about the outcome and more about the process. It's not really a rational thing.

I've basically decided to just buy a japanese PS2. Gonna be kind of a pain in the ass getting one for the right price, but I'll manage.

You may have just gotten a bad cable. I've bought three of those things and all of them worked perfectly.

Was your PS2 console slim and silver? I've heard owners with slim and silver consoles had problems with component cables.

I don't understand why Sony's official component cables are very expensive. It pisses me off. >:(

I think -- really -- the issue is that I don't want to pay 100$ lol. I'll certainly bite at some point, though. I would like a slim if possible, but that might prove to be unreasonable.

So why are you so against a disc-swap method? Swap Magic would work and all it needs is you to take the front plate of the DVD tray off, you can put it back on any time you wish.

Is it the hassle?

Pretty much. Also it just feels very janky to do, to be honest. I'm willing to pay a bit more for the convenience anyway, so investing into one of the disc swap methods when I know I won't be satisfied with it seems like a poor choice.

I still have my 60GB PS3 (with a 320GB HDD) that works just fine. I should probably check out some PS2 titles. I was a big Xbox guy so I feel like I didn't get the full impact of the PS2.

Found a copy of this lovely game today:

Stock image, but mine is CIB and in immaculate condition. Excited to play an old-school NIS game.

This is what I ended up resorting to when I wanted to play non-NTSC PS2 games, but didn't wanna shell out money for another PS2.

(I'm also kinda anal about playing games on original hardware...at least it when it comes to certain systems.)

Honestly, the hardest part of that was just getting Free McBoot on my memory card.
Had to do some goofy disc-swapping with one the PS2 Bond games.

I can attest to the fact that it works pretty damn well though.
Never had any issues with the import games I played using it.

I'm having some issues installing Free MCboot.

I'm using this guide has I have a HDadvance disk but whenever I sleclect the program in HDadvance all I see is a a black screen. The games I ripped work fine but I can't open up the ISO. Its weird also when I download the ISO it shows as like 25 MB but when I transfer it to the HDD with winhipp it becomes 125 or something.

Am I doing something wrong?

Edit: got it solved no more disc drive! Forgot how loud the fans can be though. lol

Since people are bringing up Free McBoot, I want to remind everyone that I'm willing to send GAF members memory cards with FMCB preinstalled for the cost of shipping (usually $2-3). I've come across a lot of cheap memory cards that I've picked up over the years and it only takes a few minutes to install, so I'm happy to help.

I'm still really worried about my PS2 breaking down even if I'm not using the drive. I want this thing to last forever. Are there any moving parts besides the disc drive?

I've been down the "let's make a PS2 that will last forever" road. It leads to tears. Those damn consoles will die on you in some way, just come to terms with that now. It'll overheat, or the video output port will break, or the fan will fall out.

I'm sure mine will eventually break at some point but it's been kicking ever since I've gotten it and I've put a ton of hours into it. I always get that fear feeling when I proceed to turn it on since I've had the same one since that era of gaming but the thing works like it did from day one. I'll be pretty bummed when it goes.

I got mine 2003 and haven't had any issues yet. That's a pretty good lifespan to be fair.

Wipeout Fusion
Considered by most to be by far the worst one in the franchise. But to me, it's somehow one of the best games ever. I still play it every now and then on PCSX2 and probably have put more hours into it than any other game ever. Also, it was the first Wipeout to feature Zone Mode.

Out of curiosity, which is the best graphics setup for PS2 games? On a PS2 with component cables or a backwards-compatible PS3 with hdmi?

I want it to last a few more years till I get a computer good for emulation.

How is PS2 emulation, does it have good compatibility and performance?

I have a LCD TV. No room/interest in a CRT. My problem with XRGB upscalers is how pricey they are. I care about picture, but I'm not sure I care $200-300 much.

then AFAIK, ps2 via component and PS3 via HDMI should be relatively comparable. Depends on how your TV upscales, I suppose.

Just bought:

Jak & Daxter
Jak II
Jak 3
Jak X
Metal Gear Solid 2
Metal Gear Solid 3

And put bids on:

Ratchet & Clank 2
Sly 3
Okami
Devil May Cry 1 (sealed)
Devil May Cry 3
Ape Escape 2
Ape Escape 3
Kingdom Hearts

I've actually played the majority of these games already and they're just for collection purposes :P
Some I rented when I was younger, some I played HD versions, and some I'm just replacing Platinum etc reprints I already own (Kingdom Hearts I'm replacing just because mine is a Square-Enix reprint rather than Squaresoft >_>).

holy shit, you got em all except the 4th and first. props on the plats too. I'm at 87% for TTTHD, but to this day I'm limited to having only the Me2 plat.

4 is actually included in the fighter collection box set actually, haha

Tekken rules. It's multiplatform now, but I still associate it with Sony platforms.

I'm pretty sure most everyone does too. Tekken's still pretty much seen as a playstation franchise, remains the main development platform, and it flops on anything not playstation.

Holy crap, great haul, I have Tekken 3-6 and TTT2 on Wii U, I just need the 1st 2 on PS1 and TTT1 to complete the collection until Tekken 7. I can't wait to do playthroughs on those games this year as well!!!

did you play 6 on Ps3 or 360? If 3, I wonder why you didn't get Tag 2 on 3 as well.

Seconded, though I won't lie the Wii-U version with the Nintendo stuff and lack of online pass is tempting. Been thinking about getting it despite already owning OG Tag Tournament and Tekken 3. Feels like those 2/3 games are the minimalist method of getting the best Tekken experience, and it's roughly one entry per generation, though Tag Tournament being a launch title(And on compact disc!) is kinda pushing I guess. lol

I remember my friend having lots of fun with Tekken 4 though; I remember it being alright but we usually just played Tag Tournament or 3.

Anyway here's a rough draft of my PS2 collection;

Ratchet & Clank 1-3
Ratchet Deadlocked
PS2 ports of the Ratchet/Jak PSP games
Katamari Damacy & We Love Katamari
Jak Trilogy
Jak X Combat Racing
Sly Trilogy
Crash Bandicoot 4 GH (Also own on Xbox, this version is more for collection's sake... though because I play PS2 more often than 360 it ends up being played more anyway)
Crash Twinsanity
Crash Nitro Kart
Spyro 4 (For collection reasons I assure)
Spyro 5: A Hero's Tail
Mega Man X Collection (Mega Man X7 shares the same real estate because fuck X7)
Mega Man X8
Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
Final Fantasy X
Kingdom Hearts I & II
Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain Of Memories
Okage: Shadow King
PaRappa The Rapper 2
Ty The Tasmanian Tiger
Super Monkey Ball Deluxe (Also own on Xbox)
Dark Cloud 1+2
Ape Escape 2+3
Ape Escape Pumped & Primed
Monster Rancher 3+4

lack of online pass?

and yeah I know how hated T4 was, but I had a lot of fun with it. Particularly because that's all the Tekken we had for 2-3 years till T5 was announced.

By the way, T5=best graphics on Ps2. T3=best graphics on Ps1, for that matter.

I was playing a lot of Shiren the Wanderer on my DS lately and decided to pick this up for like $10 brand new.

Anyone ever play it? I think it's a fairly hard core rogue-like.

What are the main gripes with Wipeout Fusion anyway? It's the only one that I haven't played and am curious about it.

My PS2 game collecting has become quite addicting :P

Since my last post just above I have since bought:

Ratchet & Clank
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Devil May Cry 2
Rayman 3
God of War 2

Just on the look out for ICO, SotC and God of War 1 now. Trying to just get games I've played before as a kid or through HD collections and the like to not add to the backlog :P

I'd also like a copy of Persona 3 (preferably FES) seeing I've only played Portable. They're so expensive though :(

Once I do get around to games I haven't played before my list is looking to be:

Shin Megami Tensei 3
Digital Devil Saga
Digital Devil Saga 2
Dark Cloud
Dark Chronicle
Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts 2
Klonoa 2
God Hand
Rogue Galaxy
Zone of the Enders
Zone of the Enders 2
We Love Katamari

Never a bad idea to acquire OG PS2 versions of HD-ified PS2 games, mainly because some of the HD remasters suffer from glitches/bugs.

We Love Katamari

Also grab the original, and play it first. You'll appreciate the sequel more this way.

Also, I'm gonna throw in a recommendation for everyone in this topic: Okage Shadow King.

One of the most unique RPGs ever made imho. Has a wierd EXP-gain system, and a somewhat unique battle system; You can have your party members wait and then combine their attacks on enemy all at the same time, which is pretty cool, and each character has unique actions that offer up more tactics as well; That said, the element system is a bit broke for what it is. Definitely worth at least one playthrough, but for me personally, other than the Paper Mario RPGs this was probaly the RPG I replayed the most, even if a couple of those playthroughs were incomplete due to me having an irrational fear of the second-to-last boss. XD
