New Toejam and Earl in the works

I hadn't seen a thread on this here, so I thought I'd post it.

Basically, Greg Johnson (the designer of Toejam and Earl) made a post on the Toejam and Earl FB page with some concept art, stating that development has begun on a new game in the series.

I'm not quite sure how this will work, given all of Sega's financial troubles, but I hope this does end up being made. Love the original games.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
It's been 13 years since the last one...
This is going to be on mobile isn't it?

Excited to see where this can go stylistically, if not mechanically (I'm predicting they'll make it a Rogue-lite). Does SEGA own the IP/distribution rights/trademark for T&E?

should be a fun mobile game

my money is on an endless runner

Probably mobile,as Sega is now almost broken it's the most safe choice. I never played the original Toejam & Earl,so i have to ask : what genre it was ? It looks like a plataformer but idk. Probably testing the PS3 version after this announcement.

I'm initially thrilled, but if it just jacks the Doki Doki Universe art style as the concept art seems to suggest, I'm going to be bummed. Toejam is gangly, but not a straight-up beanpole.

What's Steve Purcell doing, anyway?

Considering the recent roguelike resurgence (try saying that three times fast), there's really no better time than now to bring back ToeJam & Earl--classic formula and all!

I just hope it doesn't suck like the one on Xbox.

It was actually a roguelike, believe it or not. The sequels were platformers, but people mostly like the first one.

Too action oriented to work on mobile, though.

Yes please! Assuming its like the first one I'll buy it on Day One. I'd love for it to be on Steam because that means it'll eventually be on Vita and a modernized version of classic TJ&E on Vita sounds AMAZING!

Enormous fan of both Toejam and Earl games on the genesis. Find it annoying when most fans exclude the second game from their favor. It's completely different, but great anyway!

Now, that gospel rap xbox crap.. Shudder.

To be honest, I think all the games have a charm in their own way, but I think the first one is the best and most replayable.

Interesting - I loved the first 2 games as a kid but I can't recall much about the XBOX game (not to say it's bad, it just wasn't as memorable to me).

I wonder if this new game is going to be a sequel or a reboot?
Will it have 2D-style art or be 3D like the XBOX game?
Will it have multi-player? How about online multi-player?!

So many questions...I guess I'll just wait for more info, haha.

To be fair a game like the first one would not be bad with touch controls.

.... I mean a Wii U game, not mobile =P

Shit, the more I think about it, the more I'm worried about the potential aesthetic. TJ&E represents a very specific hip-hop/funk style from the early 90s that hasn't really been romanticized by games in the same way other aspects of the culture of the late 80s/early 90s has. TJ&E looks like the product of someone who not only played a bunch of Rogue, but also listened to a lot of Parliament and early Del Tha Funkee Homosapien and watched a lot of In Living Color. Hell, most of the series' UI looks like scrapped De La Soul album art.

Don't get me wrong, they pretty much already fucked it up before with the Xbox game, but I would love for them to revisit the style of the first two games. The funk didn't just come through in the music, after all.

Panic on Funkotron was better than the original, though.

Man, what the fuck

They're talking about which minor character people'd want on a keychain, and responded to someone liking a TJ&E shirt in a really old picture. I feel like they're going the KickStarter route here. Not that there's a problem; other than Pocket Rumble, there hasn't been a KS game that's interested me in awhile now!

I feel like the series'll be easy to bring back. Just make it a randomly generated roguelike, make it weird, and give it that strong early-90s feeling to it, and they already have a stable base to build a game off of. So long as it doesn't go mobile, they're golden.
Is it bad that I still thought Sega owned the IP?

SEGA owns the rights to the original games. Greg Johnson and Mark Voorsanger own the rights to the IP and characters, so any new games (so long as they don't reuse assets from the original) they make can be done entirely on their own, without SEGA.

Please dont fuck it up, please dont go mobile, please dont make it an endless runner as some here have suggested.

Dear God just make a random explorathon full of quirks and weird humour like the original and make it for consoles, even digital release is cool with me.

Is it too much to ask?

Its too much to ask, this is gonna be a shit mobile moneygrab

so hyped! hopefully not mobile, and the art style...i gotta see in motion. i had fun with the leaked Dreamcast beta a while back & still need to sit down and play III, but man it's been forever and the original classic really does need a proper sequel.

The original TJ&E was one of the most unique co-op games of the 16bit generation. There really was nothing else like it. The original was a game that I never really understood how to play when I was a kid, but it is something that really grew on me over time.

I'm kinda for a revival.

...really? No offense to those who are fans of the series, but its premise is a little dated. It was literally a product of its time that doesn't carry over well as an aesthetic. 90's hiphop rap is more than a little hard to push.

Wish the developers well with this one. Even with a noticeable name its going to be hard to push sales on this one IMO. Though that thing that came out for the XBOX can't really be taken as much of an example of extending the series. It was a horrible trick or treat game and not much else.

Good luck...I just don't see this having huge appeal and think its premise may be hard to push to this generation or even older ones.

Why does everything have to have "huge appeal" to be worth existing? Even the originals didn't really fit that criteria back then.

It's like questioning why bother make 90's Arcade Racer. It's obviously not going to make anyone a billionaire, so why bother? Surely the creator can't just want to make it, and it's "limited" audience are just happy to receive such a game in a time where there's essentially zero alternatives for a similar experience.

I can only assume every single one of these negative comments are coming from people who didn't actually play the first game when they were kids, or at least didn't have a friend to play it with.

Who could possibly discredit such amazing experiences as sneaking up on Santa Claus to make him drop presents, the excitement of discovering present island on level 1, and then exploring further and finding level 0 where you chill in a hot tub and drink lemonade. The terror I used to feel as I heard the honking of those ice cream trucks is something that sticks with me to this day. Everything from bribing wise-men to identify your presents so you don't hit randomizers to being afraid to check mailboxes for presents because it might be a monster made this a fantastic game.

You poindexters and dufuses need to stop dissing the best game of the 90's and start getting on board with the hype train.

Oh hell yes, I was really disappointed when I read that Toejam & Earl DS never got off the ground so it's good to see them coming back. Nice that they're going back to the older look too, TJ&E3 was okay but the early 00's style didn't age nearly as well as the original's. (Although the raps were cool. GIVE IT UP GIVE IT UP GIVE IT UP FOR MASTER T!)
