Dear Kanye, please fall off of my face. Signed ... Some dude

post-album 3? Graduation is his weakest album, by far. that's the black sheep, not the stuff that came after (unless you want to count WTT, which is garbage)

Considering MBDTF and Yeezus are two of his three best albums, hopefully most people.

Mmmm...I dunno about that. I really think Yeezus is a piece of trash and could not get into MBDTWhatever to save my life, but I think he's an awesome producer and he had a classic album run longer than most. Had I listened to either album in college when I was a more tortured soul I would probably feel completely differently, but as it stands they both sound like grieving music. The noises you make when your heart is too broken to mend on its own. Some people do grieving music well...Kanye does not IMO. BUT...I loved the shit out of WTT so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

Eh, Yeezus wasn't bad. Overall his post-Graduation output sucks, but there are still interesting tracks on all of the records.

I was aboutto say, if you're gonna say something silly like that why make it "after Graduation" when that's not a good album at all.

split on WTT tho, I listened to it in full for the first time in a year the other day and most of it remains awesomely braggy. And I'd forgotten how political Murder to Excellence gets

Please explain his other abilities .. I am trying to understand

Kanye is about vision. He makes the music no one else in his position dares to make, and he's relentlessly uncompromising in doing so. He's the best persona in music (evidenced by the fact that he was the only thing people cared about at a music show he wasn't even a part of), puts on incredible shows, and is simply making the most exciting music.

I know this is a video game forum and people have a tendency to think "kanye is only a level 4 rapper with a +6 producer buff, low tier", but good music isn't based on how fast you can play notes or how well you stay on pitch. It's not an Olympic event, it's a personal one.

As much as I love Kanye and will support him in everything he does, I think he peaked with the last 3 minutes of Runaway.

I dunno Graduation has a great vibe to me

Yeezus might be my least favorite, which is a shame because it's brilliant, but the last 2 songs suck so it's only a short 8 song burst of brilliance.

This whole situation about Beck vs. Kanye remindes me of when Esparanza Spalding won new artist over the Beebs. People threw a fit because "nobody" knew who Esparanza was and that Beiber was "more deserving" of the award.

I don't hate Kanye's music, but he really should be more respectful of the craft. Beck has done some revolutionary things with music and really turned a lot of heads in his career. I mean, Song Reader was an opus to fans of his that are actual musicians. Loser still gets steady radio play.

I also really wish some people could be accepting of other genres other than what they hold precious. Of the albums that were nominated for "Best Album" (which is a joke anyway) Morning Phase was clearly the best that was there.

Yeah, I agree. Obviously not the best thing he's ever done, but I still like it. And it has Flashing Lights!

Wow, is that just a fan he starts talking to about the shoes? Awesome.

Yeah I think so. He gets a bad rap but he really is sociable to people, he's also gotten less aggressive around paparazzi.

I'd say they're just as pointless. Grammys probably win in terms of gravitas, but reflect nothing regarding musicianship, especially with the categories that are snubbed from TV.

I'd say the Grammy's are just important as the Academy and Emmy awards. Highest, respected, awards for their form of media.

Though I do agree that many categories are left out of the Grammy's.

MTV awards are a joke, but at least they know it.

no way are the grammys seen as prestigious as the oscars these days.

Eh, I dunno. I just read an article last week on...I think it was Grantland about how even artists don't consider a Grammy award to hold the same level of prestige as an Oscar.

I'm sure there are some out there who want nothing more than to win a Grammy, but I think on the whole many see it as just a silly awards show.

I honestly think kanye is more of a marketing genius than a musical genius.

I agree. I think that being a better marketer than musician goes for a large majority of successful mainstream musicians, maybe even all of them. None of the music these people make are genius level, they're solid pieces of music that have been repackaged and re-imagined in various ways.

But I could just be talking out of my ass. I don't really study music like that so maybe Kanye and some others construct their music in a way that's considered revolutionary and genius. I also might have different interpretations on what is considered genius.

Then what tops the Grammy's?

edit: They would probably be more respected if random people weren't allowed to run up on stage to bitch.
I feel like music is way too fragmented these days and just all over the place to have one set of awards, and so as a result it lessens the impact of the Grammy's. They simply don't apply to vast sections of the current musical landscape. I mean the amount of music that comes out today between traditional big artists on iTunes and on CD's and independent artists on places like bandcamp is just unfathomably massive. There's new music literally everywhere. It's way too big for any awards show.

Film to me isn't as scattered as music, so I guess the Oscars feel like they're covering more ground. That may not actually be true, and I'm definitely not suggesting that the Oscars are all inclusive because they aren't, but they feel closer to that than the Grammy's. Though that may change in the future if streaming continues to take off and the traditional theater experience moves closer to extinction. Things could explode and you'd start seeing top notch movies in every corner of the internet (which is where I think music is at now).

In this thread, I've learned some think commercial sales = talent. In the same token, I've realized Bayformers are better movies than most of those critical hacks and were rob of Oscar noms.

I am in no way saying Beyonce = Bay btw lol.

Beck has more musical talent in just his fingertips than Kanye has brain cells. Kanye is the Kardashian of the music industry IMO, talentless.

Co-signed the OP's sentiment.
