I disagree on comparing films length and game length and associating the costs when both are wildly different and have completely different pricing because they're two completely different industries.

But do you rate movies based on their runtime or on the quality? Do you assess the cost of the movie ticket and the length of the movie? Or do you base what is worth seeing or paying money for on quality? I didn't know those expectations were exclusive to specific forms of entertainment. I always thought the quality of movie, book, game dictates the value.

I actually do think that as gamers, demanding more value content is never a bad thing. But there is a level of understanding that goes with it, that I completely accept some will disregard, and that is the fact that this is after all Ready at Dawn's first major console title, and something a team of 100 something devs have been working on for 4 years.

They obviously don't have the kind of budget and man power as certain other development studios or publishers, and will have spent a huge amount of time and money simply developing their engine, so some leeway being afforded to them, to me at least seems fair. To me this is very much an Uncharted 1 type situation, and I'd expect the sequel to The Order 1886, just like Uncharted 2, to be far more content rich.

I also see this game being akin to Uncharted 1, fully expecting the second to have online co-op missions and a meatier single player. Order 1886 is very expensive here in the UK so can't blame people asking they get bang for their buck, quality over quantity is lovely and all but many games have been shown to have both. I do think the studio will get a second shot though, it should be able to manage 1M within the first month and the ridiculous EU pricing will help them I guess get money in. As a EU consumer I seem ripped off to say the least though, no wonder those PSN store cards are number 1 sellers on amazon.com, might start buying them and get must have games for $60. :P

Yet all three are all forms of entertainment. They can, IMO at the basic level be compared.

And movies aren't $8 dollars anymore lol.
I just watched a film called Song of the Sea for $8.

I rate films based on quality because I most definitely know about the average length of a film and films don't cost $60.

It does indeed seem like an obsession unique to games.

Recently I had two friends tell me they bought a cd and they thought it sucked how short it was. They both said there should be more songs on it or at least it should be cheaper.
This way of thinking actually applies to a lot of other things than music or games.

I think it's silly because if the game is really good, it's still a better experience than with a lengthy average game

Poor guy :(

It really must be a soul sucking industry. Can't imagine spending years of my life working on something to have people try and tear it down baselessly.
That being said people are entitled to their opinions.

Ok. So you don't base games on quality since they cost more than a movie ticket? Also what is the "average" length of a video game? Since that seems to factor into you assess value? I mean there are so many different genres...

better call saul season pass is 24 bucks.
now thats value for money per hour. For new content that is very popular.
There are season passes for tv shows now?

I was just dragged along for Fifty shades which ended up costing me quite close to what i'm paying for The Order.

*slits wrists*
I'm sorry.

Never said that I don't base games on quality, not exactly expecting this game to be some timeless classic so that cost and length isn't a factor in my purchase.

And I had a meal yesterday for $70 o.O

…

Thanks for reminding me. Now I gotta go through the 5 stages of grief all over again.

I HATE YOU!

$30 for 2 tickets and $20 for snacks you get 2 hours of soft porn...then sex with S/O

for $60 you get 8-10 hours of awesome gameplay...then sex with S/O.

What the hell!
A family of 5 can eat well for that, around here.

I screwed up. I asked for a special Belgian stout without realizing I'm buying a bottle and not a glass. He took the menu away before I checked the price. That alone was $25-30 (or something). Then I got too drunk trying to finish the bottle and ordered a fancy dessert… And then… ugh… Never mind.

:'(

Really? Was the meal 2 or 3 hours? If it was over 2 hours it might be worth it, but under 2 hours that's a rip off.

Just trying to annoying crossing-eden :P

God, I hate this game length nonsense. Fucking open-world games and their hours upon hours of pointless bullshit side mission fetch quests. Shit content is shit content. It's so odd to me that people would beg for more shit thrown on top dog a game that's already exhausted the story and gameplay that the creator intended. This game will be exactly as long as it should be.

Also, gaming is as cheap as it has ever been. Unfortunately, gamers are cheaper than they've ever been. It's disheartening to go from that thread where everyone was lamenting the sad stories of those who work in the industry to a thread where people bitch about how games are too expensive. Goes to show how most gamers really don't give any more of a shit than the publishers/execs they bash on the internet.

Kudos to RAD for sticking to their vision and delivering what, I hope will be, an exciting, focused and coherent experience.

Gaf wont like you. But I like you...

I mean, on one hand some games go on too long. I never beat Dragon Age: Inquisition despite LOVING it. It was just too long for me.

But some games definitely cut it short on content. I feel that The Last of Us was a particularly excellent example of a high value single-player experience, even if its multi-player were removed. I remember completing the first Uncharted: Drake's Fortune game and wish I had rented it because it was only about 8 hours, had very little in regards to collectibles, and no reason to replay it.

Remember, video games are $60. If The Order: 1886 is less than 8 hours, and doesn't do much in regards to replay value (and I'll find out this weekend where it stands), I can see it getting a lot of crap no matter how fun it is.

For $70, it would have to last 8 to 10 hours minimum!
I heard you can eat the dessert in less than 10 minutes, so not getting my hopes up.

Valid points but if a game is fun, to me, that's replayabilty.

When encounters start to become stale, then a game stops being replayable.

Stuff like collectibles is just an added excuse to replay the game, not the actual replayabilty factor.

I wish videogames were $60. Try £50+. Not going to buying many day 1 console games this gen, I can tell you :p

No way I'd pay £50 for a game day one, unless it was a special edition or something. If you look hard enough online they can always be found for £40 or less at launch.

Digital prices though, jesus, it's like they actively don't want us to embrace digital with those prices.

Everyone should be able to assess the value of a game according to their own taste. I just feel like people see "back-of-the-box" type quotes of "50+ hours of gameplay" and take that to be a good thing regardless of what that 50 hours actually consists of. To apply that standard to a genre that (I realize nobody is asking for 50 hours here) historically has games than run 8-15 hours is kinda silly. I may be the only gamer who never got in to all the collectibles and side stuff.

There's an insane amount of detail that went into this game, I'd really hate to think that the developers might be pressured to spend time and resources on adding in some fluff on the side to meet an arbitrary "content" quota if they end up making a sequel. Although, perhaps their budget would increase quite a bit for a sequel and it wouldn't be an issue. As you said, the first Uncharted was light on content compared to the others (and TLOU). Perhaps this series will follow the same progression.

I've always assessed a game's value by how I feel after I beat the game and how much of my playthrough I enjoyed. Granted, I honestly couldn't tell you how long it took me to beat any game I've ever played so perhaps I'm the one who's out-of-touch.

Nah fam everyone's charging out the arse. I'd fucking love to be able to get the order for 40 but the reality is I'll probably forget about until I see it at cex for 20 or so.

Sonys loss there, I suppose.

I know what you're getting at, and different strokes for different folks. But it makes me sad to look at my PS3 library and see the 20 or so games I bought (most of which are exclusive...) that lasted me 8 hours and then I never played them again. I could put a down payment on a house with the money I spend on 2-3 day gaming experiences. I need to stop it.

Why are they so much more in the UK? Does it have something to do with VAT or whatever? That's like a 25% increase over our prices. Wtf.

Damn, what stout was it? Really shocking seeing that price when you're from belgium:-)

It's more than likely gonna happen. How many The Order threads been locked? I honestly lost count.

There are two sitting on the first page that are 40+ pages long. I'd say it would make sense to lock any of the others that may have existed lol.

Bourbon something something something stout is all I remember. Had 10.x% alcohol and tasted freaking amazing.

EDIT:

Found it: Bourbon Barrel Belgium Imperial stout

Can't remember the brewing company
