Pretty close.

Um...

...Downgrade?

Everything is blurry as hell.

It's fog / polluted smog, which London was full of back then. All these comparison photos have been of the same section in Whitechapel. First pic looks more video gamey, while the second looks more like London. Interior shots aren't blurry.

Just from watching some of the leaked videos, this game comes off as super polished and solid. Regardless of how the overall game turns out, it just doesn't seem to have much jank to it and the presentation is top notch.

Clearly they spat out a completed product by the end, but it sounds like they scared themselves in the process.

Has there ever been any game where the final product is more ambitious and grander than the original vision?

I mean, at the end of the day, it's far easier to theory-craft and think of all the different, cool ideas that a game could potentially include/have than to actually make all those ideas work in a single, coherent package filled with art and tech.

Even someone like Kojima ( probably one of the most, if not most ambitious dev in terms of having a very grand vision with a large array of different gameplay ideas within a single title ) has been known to been forced to scale back his ambition, like with MGS3.

If you can rent it first I don't see how that could hurt. The game will likely end up being shorter than people expect anyway. Bloodborne will definitely be a longer game and have more replayability as well.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Just hate renting games I feel worthy of buying lol.

Youtube compression compared to gamersyde screenshot, and the newer version has a lot more post processing effects applied and is set at night while the older version seems to just have DoF, Ingraine's hair is rendered better in the newer version as well. Also take into account that they're wearing their stealth outfits instead of the default Knight outfits in the older version.

Just let it go. Or you will have to react to plenty more of these bait posts (the comparison post i mean). They always seem so harmless.

That's not entirely true, the character models are slightly different; they have scarves now and Ingraine is carrying more equipment.

Sorry, I meant where the assets are the same, they look consistent quality-wise (the background bricks, ledge, faces, etc.

You're right about the clothes and equipment being changed so hard to compare those.

Well, it is good to hear the game is well polished.

I just hope the gameplay is really engaging too.

If it is, then Sony definitely has a winner here.

The only major problem I could see if that, due to the cinematic nature of the gameplay and level design, replayability will be fairly low.

I can't really see people going through this multiple times. Can any of you?

Yes. The games I replayed the most in my life are TLOU, UC2, UC3, GodW2/3, Dead Space 2, RE4 and MGS3. I know most of those games are quite a bit more dynamic in terms of gameplay, but as I am an experience gamer, that is not really the reason I replayed those that much. If there are great setpieces, badass shootouts and well written characters/interactions, I am likely to pick it up again some time later. I like those "rollecoaster ride" type of games. Similar to rewatching my favourite scenes/episodes of good series or rewatching great movies, I tend to revisit them.

I never replayed any open world title or RPG in my life (they do take longer to finish though, and in the case of GTA I like to come back to mess around a bit). So to each his own.

Oh, that makes much more sense.

I starting dreading some DriveClub-style downgrade from pre-release ---> retail.

Certainly. I cannot wait to just dive in to this experience. Looks at worst like it will be a fairly decent storyline with an impeccably realised setting, well acted for a game and with a good soundtrack. I say a decent storyline in comparison with a good film, not comparing to other games, where besides a very small selection it will clearly be miles ahead of any other game, and in execution at this point in time it stands alone.
I really like the setting, and atmosphere, in the game. I honestly wouldn't mind a survival horror game in a similar setting. Maybe not London exactly, but more early 20th century Germany. Mix in some grounded fantasy elements, make it suitably creepy, and keep it somewhat cinematic too. I was thinking about this a week ago, and I don't think I've played many games that had a Germany influenced setting. I think there was a Shadow Hearts game, but I can't remember that well. It seems like the kind of setting where you could explore some interesting elements in a more fantastical world.

I'm down for an The Order: 1886 TV show though.

At this point even if some things were downgraded it wouldn't matter since the game is one of the best looking games ever from a graphical standpoint.

DriveClub wasn't downgraded. It was upgraded if anything. Unless you're referring to the effects of super sampling. Obviously the real game was never going to be super sampled the way the press shots were, but the retail photo mode shots are every bit as good if not better.

Game was great IMO! Put about 150 hrs into, but yeah, absolutely a downgrade. Very depressing.

Mods helped, but, still wasn't the same :(

Yeah I only played about 10 hours, meant to go back but just ended up trading it in (didn't have the time to sink).

Thinking about getting the PS4 version but I'm wondering if I will even need it now that Bloodborne is almost out

That's true, The Order is already head-and-shoulders above everything else on the market.

DriveClub get a downgrade ? This is pretty new to me.

Yea, if I recall correctly, I got suckered in by some B-roll footage that released mere days before release on some bootleg site.

It wasn't representative of the retail release; it was either down- or super sampled.

Do yourself a favor and get the PS4 versions during any part of summer thats slow on games after you finished up w/ bloodborne. It's an amazing game, despite being worse than Dark Souls 1.

(should be cheaper by then too!)

I totally understand if you're avoiding it because you don't want to sully your gameplay experience, but WOW is that Knights Theme excellent. I almost wish I'd gone Collectors so I could get the soundtrack, but having one Steelbook on my shelf would bother me to no end. (If you haven't heard it yet: https://soundcloud.com/playstation/the-knights-theme Apparently, First Light also has a great soundtrack. Didn't make an impact on me while playing it, but its theme at least is fantastic.)

From what I'm reading here, I should be really excited for The Order: 1887 and expect it to be the series's AC2 or Uncharted 2. But I'm super excited for 1886.

P.S.: Soundtrack hits iTunes Tuesday for $11.

P.P.S.: This game have a photo mode?

Oh shit this is good news!

Well maybe it's 2 hours or 2,5. I didn't measure the time, but the majority of it is cutscenes.
So 1,5 hours or 2,5 hours doesn't seem like a big difference either way. Obviously depends on the player.

If you really get into finding collectibles I'm sure you can spend much more time with it. Or if you play on hard difficulty (which I wasn't).
But my best guess, based on what I have captured it's around 1,5h-2h gameplay and rest was cutscenes. Take the first 4 chapters for example, maybe 35% of that was gameplay. Some chapters consist only of cutscenes. And often times there are these "interactive" cutscenes with QTEs where you need to press some buttons, but I wouldn't count that as gameplay.

It's more of an interactive movie to me, which isn't a bad thing. Hence the film stripes. So calm down everyone. Jesus :D

thats his claim

penny dreadful
Going to look into this. By the time I finally get around to watching it, if it doesn't deliver what I wanted, I'm going to send you a sternly worded PM (mainly consisting of me probably crying but you get the idea) in a few months if I still remember it was you. Your life is on the line now.

So far:

"Psychological thriller that takes place in the dark corners of Victorian London" and James Bond starring is a pretty good start. Not bad. Sort of intrigued.
