The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

High scores for the game would be immensely more entertaining than low scores.

Sadly I feel like it'll be a mix of both and we'll just get more of the same stuff from the last 2 weeks.
I want the high scores so I can bask in the salty "the industry is dying" and "cinematic BS" commentary.
I'd go nuts if it hits 80 LOL
TBH, I'll probably go nuts over that too. Not that I think Wolfenstein deserves the score it has, but it'll be hilarious if TO has a higher score than TNO. People might die in that thread.

Having completed the game, I'm just gonna sit back, eat some popcorn and enjoy the spectacle while others will provide the entertainment.

It's safe to say, there are probably an equal amount of people lurking in these threads who want this game to fail as there are who don't want it to. This place sure is going to be a mess come tomorrow whichever way it all goes.

I'm getting Beyond: Two Souls levels of divisiveness from the buzz around the game.

It has a 70 metascore but there were very few outlets that gave it a 7. Lots of 4s and 9s
Oh boy. Did Beyond have this much hate pre-release? The thing about Beyond is that
I love the concept of the game and I don't think it's half as bad as some people make it out to be. It's a pretty interesting little title
Had to spoiler that so the anti-Beyond crowd doesn't lynch me.

A 70-75 will be kind of a boring result :P

It's a David Cage game, divisive is putting it mildly.

I liked Beyond too. I didn't think it was as good as Heavy Rain from an interaction standpoint but the writing and story was solid.

I want high scores because we need more great games regardless if they are cinematic, open world, or whatever.

Seriously, personally I've played so few "9" games on my PS4.

I wasn't on GAF at the time so I don't know what the prerelease was like. I know a lot of people hate David Cage.

I'm predicting a meta-score of around 83. It probably won't happen, but:

I think it will do just fine. Probably it will get the same metacritic score as Second Son.

If we're talking exclusive games, I'd have to agree. The only exclusive I'd give a 9 or above is TLoU:R, which is a port anyways. It's always good to see people being open to games of all type :')

It's a shame because even though he says some stupid things sometimes, I think he brings a lot of interesting ideas to this industry.

That would make it an 80. I can see that.

No, I'm not talking about exclusives, but this is me. I enjoyed a lot of Mordor, Dragon Age, Destiny... but no, many things that I didn't like about those games (many that I did like too).

Edit: Funny thing is that Dragon Age Inquisition was my GOTY along with Wolf Among Us.

Was watching someone streaming this on live from playstation. I gotta say this game wasn't on my radar but after watching a few minutes of the stream I will be buying it. It looks amazing.

Impressions part 3.5

Been playing the game for 5 hours (beginning of chapter 4 now) and here some early impressions,

Graphics - the new king has arrived, can't wait for photomode.

I love the punch of the guns, sounds, just overall pretty solid and satisfying gunplay. I like the little details when you are using your guns (ex. I noticed when using the sniper the strap is swinging realistically especially when you are using your sniper and going from cover to cover)

For me it's type of game where once you start it's kinda hard to stop because you want to know what happens next in the story or you want to kill more bad guys because the guns are very satisfying to use. I like how you can see the effect of the thermite rifle burning bodies. So really looking forward to enjoy more of the game tomorrow.

+ Best looking game I've ever played. Chapter 3 spoiler
The interior of Tesla's laboratory especially looks insane, like real life.
+ Some have said the start is slow. I kinda disagree. 10 minutes in and you're sent right into action. I think the pacing thus far (I'm at chapter 4) is good and smooth.
+ Gun play feels great, there's a good variation to weapons.
+ Voice acting is outstanding and the story thus far is interesting.
+ The atmosphere is really good, at least take SOME time to soak it in.

- Black bars are annoying
- Little variation thus far in gameplay. Cutscenes > action scenes with regular cover/shooting gameplay. Rinse and repeat.
- The game doesn't track what collectibles you've already found which, in combination with unskippable cut scenes, can become quite annoying for some.
- Pretty easy thus far on hard. Enemy AI isn't very smart. Quite easy to land head shots.

I just got onto Chapter 5 and thought I would collect and congregate my impressions:

+ Graphics have set a new bar (though they were already aiming for a cinematic experience but it all really blends well).

+ Gameplay is fun, liked the fast paced combat in the starting chapters, straight out of a movie.

+ Always loved Victorian type settings with half-breed type of stuffs, good to see it infused with RAD's imagination of that era's modern weaponry.

+ OST sound is pretty good with the atmosphere.

+ LOVE the inspect mode.

= Animations are solid although do tend to be weird at times.

= VA could be better, especially Igraine's VA.

- Cover system glitched out at a s ection or two for me, perhaps was switched off? Doesn't make sense though.

- The main characters are so well detailed and get most of the processing power that sometimes the surroundings look fake and the characters feel like imposed onto a backdrop.

- A.I leaves a lot to be desired.

- The starting was WAY too slow (QTE fest - CUTSCENE - QTE FEST- WALK HERE etc). Perhaps building momentum?

- Lot less freedom at some sections when choosing a weapon/wanting to change to another weapon.

So far I'm enjoying it and if I were to give it a score right about now it would be:

9/10 for graphics
7/10 for gameplay
8/10 for sound
7/10 for story (so far)
Just finished the game. Took about 10 hours on medium. A friend also took around the same time, so I think that's typical if you take your time. Only difficulty came when they threw like a dozen soldiers at you, or when those grenade lobbers showed up, forcing you to abandon your cover.

Gameplay wise I'd say it's competent, the Blacklight thing was nice although I rarely remembered to use it. QTEs weren't too bad. Aside from the RE4-like melee fights, they only show up like 5 or 6 times in the entire game. Even the stealth sections were okay, although having to time your triangle press to take out an enemy from behind felt unnecessary.

Had some weird glitches happen, such as the weapons menu not showing up sometimes, or some weapons disappearing, and one time an enemy was just standing around despite my being mere meters away. Very infrequent, though.

The game will be enjoyed mainly for its presentation, and it excels there. Really amazing attention to detail. And unique setting, too. Too bad the story seems to abruptly end.

I enjoyed my experience with the game, but I don't think I'll return to it. The game doesn't even tell you what collectables you've missed on which chapter, and you can't skip cut-scenes.
Alright so I finally beat it, it took me at least over 9-10 hours playing on Hard. Died a couple of times so had to re-do certain areas. This is an add-on to the impressions I shared earlier so I guess you can call this my final impressions

Overall I feel the games main issue is pacing. There are some gameplay gripes as well that I mentioned but I feel like this is the biggest thing.

The shootouts are fun albeit simplistic but in the beginning they are spread far too thin. They share the spotlight a bit to much with downtime moments and cutscenes. Where I feel far later in the game they hit that right balance all the way down to the conclusion.

The story is overall pretty good and sets up the universe perfectly for future story lines and sequels. The storyline however also suffers from pacing issues and I feel that it didn't really hook me until later in the game

Personally if you are into these types of games (heavily story driven) then definitely go for it. If you are looking for a TPS but not very much into the story aspects within games this may not be for you. If you dislike heavily story driven games and linearity in general avoid.

Can't wait to see where they take the franchise next hopefully there will be many improvements.

After approx. 3hours and a half in, near the end of chapter 3, already more than 30 screenshots taken, I must say it's a better game than expected.
Gameplay / gunplay is fun (though very linear), controls are tight, graphics are the best ever in a console game - no contest, frame rate is rock solid, sound design is top tier and voice acting is up there with TLOU... True, The Order doesn't try anything groundbreaking, but pretty much everything about it is polished and well done (except the AI).
I am impressed by RAD's "first" game, and now every other games I own suffer from obvious jaggyness...
So I have been playing this games for seven hours. It think i am on chapter 12 or 13 so here are my impressions

+ game is beautiful . Best looking game on any platform including pc. Not only it looks good it feels grounded and art matches the technical excellence. I cant describe why but it has CG feeling to it. It reminds me of concept CGI videos some times. Animation is also terrific.

+ Voice acting and music is great. Music is really haunting and unique. Guns also sound very punchy

+ Game play is also good. Sir Galahad moves much faster than i expected but the guns feel much heavier than Uncharted etc. Also guns pack quite a punch. Cover is assigned to a but but there is also soft cover when you get close to it. it takes some time getting used to tough

+ Pacing is good

+ Characters and their interaction feels very natural and all of them feel grounded .

+ did i mention how beautiful this game is

= playing on hard some times AI feels great other times very stupid. don't know why so i am neutral on this aspect. when it works its great when not then you know.

- QTE melee. i don't generally hate qte and they are quite punchy but you lose this sense of controlling character. like camera angle changes and it feels very disjointed

- start of the game is very slow. like really really slow

- Lore surrounding the game is great and without mentioning any spoiler ill just say that story is just ok. much better than many other games but i was expecting some thing more or different. any how this is personal preference so wont go into details

- Transitions from game play to cut scene are not as seamless as i hoped for a game with no prerendered cut scenes

Over all i am enjoying it a lot. it gives me feeling of playing RE or Maxpayne for the first time.

If you like cinematic shooter without too much other craps to do then this is game for you . if you are a guy which perfers open areas and wild wilderness to explore with xp leveling etc then don't even bother .

My rating uptill now Tombraider Out of Uncharted 2
Played up until Chapter 9 last night. Some quick impressions:

-Graphics are absolutely incredible. Audio is in the same ballpark as well, lots of detail can be heard in sound effects and voice recordings. The acting is really well done.

-The game is as linear as you can get. Literally point A to point B. No side hallways to explore, no extra rooms/areas to go in. Disappointed in how linear it is, especially given how incredible the environments are. Seeing more of them at my leisure would've been a blast.

-Environments are exquisitely detailed. The whole "vibe" of the world comes through really well. Art direction second to none.

-Shooting parts are fun and control well but they are few and far between and are often far too short to get any sort of extended satisfaction from them. There are some weapons I've only seen/used once so far, there are not enough opportunities to get familiar with the arsenal in the game.

-Shooting feels really good. Enemy feedback when shot is great. Gun sounds are visceral and sharp.

-The game takes control away from you far too often. There are long stretches where you are pushing forward on the left stick for about 10 seconds before the game takes control away from you, and it happens repeatedly. It's super annoying. LOTS of forced walking segments, lots of QTE's. It can actually get a bit boring to play during these segments.

I have some videos of my personal playthrough if you want to see me play through some of it.

Any questions I'll be glad to answer.

Okay I'm two hours in:

Pros:

-Game is incredibly gorgeous, everything is highly detailed, from the environments, down to the clothing and objects in the world.
-The 4 knights are really well acted and written. The brief little cutscenes for small things like showing Gallahad crouching behind cover, or planning a sneak attack with your partner, really work (I realise now) because they keep you feeling like you're in a movie
-The controls and guns feel perfect
-If you've watched the long gameplay demo, the game feels like that so far. Once you're past the slow intro portion, everything moves along at a brisk pace and you don't want to stop playing or the game to end.
-THe knights' uniforms are really cool, particularly how they vary for different ranks

Cons:

-You can't switch shoulder views (left to right)
-During cutscenes, there's a slight stiffness in the characters' eyes. It's particularly noticeable in Igraine to me, for some reason, and also because the voice acting is so natural that it stands out.

Are the black bars irritating anyone?

Not me. Gives a really great cinematic feel, I played The Evil Within and felt that it was like a demo for how The Order would feel with the black bars.

Gameplay is fun, combat seems fluid and never out of a movie scene.

Lighting is pretty great, indoors the game looks superb. Outdoors has some of the flaws (graphically speaking).

Why were people throwing around the campaign being 5 hours? I'm six hours into it and from the looks of things I have some more to go. I'll finish it by tonight and will write my overall impressions of the game. So far I love it. It's not mind blowing but the game has continually surprised me visually and I love the story and world. I have a feeling critics are going to be harsher on it than it deserves.

It's a 24 hour ban, fuck'em.

The visuals are superb and at times ridiculously amazing, no differences whatsoever between cutscenes and gameplay. The lighting is spectacular, texture work, shaders, animations oh man. Went through the prologue in an hour just staring at the surroundings. I'm also digging the gun play and voice acting a lot.

Just finished chapter 5. Visually stunning! HNNNG!

But yeah, the game is super linear. Like, most of the collectibles are right in front of your eyes. You don't even have to look left or right. There are a few that are off the beaten path, but I feel those paths are made just for the collectibles, and not the other way around, which is definitely not a good thing.

But again, holy shit at the visuals in chapter 5.

I expect this game to get 6's and 7's around. Reviewers seem to hate linearity and considering this game isn't breaking new ground in the genre, I wouldn't be surprised to see them shred the game for playing it ultra safe in gameplay department or something.

It's a shame because even though he says some stupid things sometimes, I think he brings a lot of interesting ideas to this industry.
The thing is, 80% of the "stupid" things he says, he either didnt say at all, were quoted out of context, come to truth later on (such as L.A. Noires technology not catching on) or came to be cause Cage isnt completely fluent in English still and he later clarified and expended on that statement. Everything is twisted against him, when in reality he is a pretty open minded and nice dude with an interesting take on a few subjects. He is not even close to someone like Molyneux who promises the stars frequently and with no restraint.

I happy Cage decided to stop talking to the press for a while, because there is honestly no way he can speak his mind without receiving a lot of hate. Fortunately his games sell regardless to the target audience, so it's not like he needs it.

Well, when you see most people praise the order just because it has pretty graphics, cool uniforms or snazzy effects, but can't seem to really elaborate on the gameplay, I don't expect much more than 7 and 8s from media. I'm expecting MUCH worse for user critics sadly, with a lot who will jump on the bandwagon (I don't like the Order that much but many of the critics I heard of "why it's bad" i thought were bogus and sadly will only stifle any kind of debate)

All probably very true. I hope he improves his English and gets better at talking to the press

Yup.

I will always think David Cage is a brilliant guy who just needs a right-hand man to help him focus and stay on course with certain things.

This is going to happen tomorrow regardless of scores and you all know it.

This is by no means an indication of my score, I'm adding this because people will assume things otherwise.

David Cage should relegate the writing part of his games to someone else entirely. Seriously, he's had three tries and produced three terrible stories, the worst of which was Beyond Two Souls.

Said fuck it and did my first preorder since Destiny. Had Amazon gift cards from christmas and an empty weekend so why the hell not. Thanks for the impressions ladies and gents.

It's a sad age when games get criticised for what they didn't do not on what they actually did. Lost faith in reviewers last year.

Last year? heehhehe..... perhaps you started paying serious attention to them in the heat of a console war.

Anyway...loving the impressions. Thanks to all the folks who have taken part.

So many people nowadays place so much weight in reviews and review scores. I guess its not their fault, as it's the only way to judge a game without buying it

Bring back the days when most games had a demo before release. That was truly the best way to decide for yourself if a game was worth buying

Yep can't wait till some more or you guys have played it and we can discuss where it could go story wise as well as gameplay wise in sequels.
