Kid share plays Destiny to stranger...

Not sure how to take this...
To clarify one part is that this happened a while back when I was younger

Many members seem to spin this into a positive thing, that he has learned a valuable lesson out of this and it could have been much worse. And I criticize them.

Judging by your experience, you still don't seem too happy about what happened, hard to take it as a positive thing.

yes it is.

you said the root cause is the kid and did not mention the asshole. that's a defense given how obvious it is that one of those people did something wrong to another person.

it's one thing to say the kid learned a lesson. it's another entirely to blame the kid and call it a root cause.

what am I missing? the root cause would be the kid not breaking contact with the stranger, no?

Some quotes from BuzzGoku's reddit posting.

"Never thought this would get to Reddit but I have to defend myself The kid was unbearably annoying. I don't know how he got our IDs but he was spamming me and my friend with messages asking for glitches and shit. I got pissed off and decided to to mess with him a bit. I don't really feel regret for deleting them. It's just video games."

"Blocking him wouldn't have made him stop asking for glitches. Hell, he's lucky he lost them instead of having been banned by a Bungie employee. i don't know why people are hating on me when i did a good thing."

"How is karma gonna hit me? The Bungie employees sure are making some soothing sounds to the crybaby over there but I'm enjoying my level 30+ characters. Fuck off."

You can also read all about how he likes it when trannsgender people kill themselves, but he likes anime.

justifies? it shows its not consistently one way or the other, and subject to quesiton. stop trying to needless moral label people.

you realize your labeling helps nothing.

this disconnect is where I bolded and already explained why I have my opinion on destiny exploiting multiple times. based on that we don't need to go in circles any more.

Show me 10 people who said they laughed until he started crying.

Should be easy since it's the basis of your opinion.

Which one of you is a vigilante "cheater" justice person with the PSN ID KermitTHEFrog?

Is there some kind of underground ring on GAF that does this shit?

The guy was an asshat but the kid messed up and learned from it. That's what being a kid is about.

I can't agree with the people saying Bungie should step in and give his stuff back, especially not give him anything extra. The kid shared it with him for shaky reasons and he got burned. It happens.

So wait, the kid's mom uploaded the video to show Bungie CS, thinking only Bungie will see it. Bungie then posts the video, making no effort to hide user names or anything. 11 year old kid is now getting harassed online by shitheads (people are also helping him, so that's nice). Not only did he lose his characters, he now has to deal with even more online assholes, and I wouldn't be surprised if kids at his school hear about it and he gets even more shit.

yes multiple = 10 for some reason? and why do I need to?

I don't even know what to say....

You've never grinded or farmed in an RPG before? You've got to be trolling.

Since we are talking about Destiny, I've been 26 for over a week and just keep plugging away at Vanguard rep like I thought I should.

yes yes I know, everyone in the OT cheats and etc etc etc.

now I'm only level 26 and don't know everything ( or really anything ) about exploits, so would exploiting gear have any impact on this? https://www.bungie.net/en/event/ironbanner

So if you actually read the article from Game Informer that was posted by a page back, the mom uploaded the video strictly to share it with Bungie to see if she could get his characters back. She had no idea it would blow up like this

I did "actually read the article" before posting.

That's where I got the info the mom is the one that posted the video...

Were you trying to debate a point I made about the consequences of uploading your child's torment onto a site where videos regularly go viral?

Sad story, the fact so many people here think it's funny, or worse, deserved, makes me sad.
Me too. I mean we still all see the new ways Gamergate is creating horror stories on who they feel 'deserve' things popping up in threads all the time and gamers still keep seemingly to having a crippling lack of empathy when people just get straight bullied and abused.

So if someone stole your kids bike you wouldn't try to help get it back. You would say sorry hope you learned a lesson?

Reminds me of that Archer episode when Archer as kid left his bike he got as a birthday gift outside. His mom took it back and made him think it was stolen as a way to teach him a "lesson".
She didn't give the bike back and think she does it again with his birthday car lol.

It's sucks that this happened to the kid, that guy that screwed him over should get banned or something. And I guess it kind of teaches the kid a lesson (but I wish it wasn't in this way) to not shareplay with strangers.

Never used the loot cave or abused missions?
It's so amazingly awesome for a 38 year old to pull an "innocent" prank on an 11 year old child. Geezus fuck, man, I hope you're trolling.

It's easy to see who is more likely to be horrible people on here. I can understand if someone thinks the kid learned his lesson, but then to say it was deserved and you don't feel sorry is just cold as hell.

I'm sorry, but am I the only one that finds this hilarious??? It an innocent prank that is amazingly awesome. It's just a video gAme. Quit crying you baby.

I didn't play a lot when the game came out so I don't know about the loot cave, and I'm not sure how to even abuse missions. I run will of crota for better gear and grind vanguard rep through strikes. A buddy at work is really into that stuff but I usually make fun of him for trying to find ways to NOT play a game hes obsessed about. I guess it hasn't burned me out yet as much as others since I didn't go hardcore at launch.

and I seems I am playing the game wrong...

You said many. Now it's just multiple. Interesting.

and it really makes no difference since its semantics. direct your argument sensor to a more valid target. not even sure what you are focusing on at this point?

Isn't that game pretty much what life is for a lot of people? Finding ways to get rich quick? They aren't bad people for doing it.

Decent people like myself would ignore the kid and/or block him for spamming requests and get on with our own gaming. Sure some of the younger generations can be annoying at times with spam/in-game voice chat, but block/ignore. Anything OTT and report them to Sony/MS.

No matter what way you cut it you have to be a dick of a person to delete someone's items and feel okay about yourself.

Right here..if the kid was annoying block him and be done with him forever. Unless this guy is a bungie employee this should of been as far as he had to take it without handing out "internet justice"

Hey you're the one who used it as the base of your argument.

That many people were laughing until the kid started crying and that's why you see the difference in opion.

Just because I proved you wrong doesn't mean you have to try and save face like this.

You're not playing the game wrong--it's just that lots of other players, especially those playing since launch, ARE sick of the grind (which is entirely Bungie's fault in terms of game design and content) required to level up or get new gear, so they find ways to exploit or cheese bosses. Early on (I sold my launch copy after a few months, so maybe it's different), Nightfall runs were virtually impossible without cheese.

I'd be willing to bet that everyone who cheeses or exploits, has at least one character that was earned "legitimately"...and that's enough to realize you don't want to go through the tedium again.

I sympathize with the kid. I had a Level 29 and gear for other classes, but I had no desire to go through the story or grind my way back up just so I could use gear that was received for a class that wasn't mine (lololol) or earn more than X currency per week.

Truthfully, many of us cheated at something when we were growing up, but part of the maturation process is suffering consequences for our actions - some of us paid dearly; others not much, but they're always harsh. Everyone will face different consequences and there's no such thing as, "Yeah, but this shouldn't be the consequence for glitching." because we don't get to choose our lessons. If we did, life would be a hell of a lot easier. Losing a video game character is nothing compared to cheating in the real world.

It's unfortunate that this 11-year old boys parents weren't monitoring his online activity with more caution, but the majority of parents today have zero clue, or care, about what their kids engage in. What they needed to do, instead of posting his shame on Youtube, was accept responsibility and use it to teach their son about cheating, sharing, and protecting his valuable assets. Anything else is a wasted life experience.

All that said, I truly empathize with the boy, but harsh lessons are a part of growing up. I surely had mine and I had no one to blame but myself.

But again, that isn't what occured here. The kid was not looking to cheat from the onset. He didn't just hop into the tower and look for people that could help him exploit. I think that is what is getting lost on so many people here.

He was playing with people. They told him, hey man we can get you to 31. The kid being the naive kid that he was believed them. After all, he had 'befriend' them by playing with them. They told him in order to do it he needed to enable share play. He did. They deleted his shit.

Lucky break! That person just added hours worth of gameplay!

Reminds me of when my friend deleted my F-Zero GX save with everything unlocked, and I was sitting right next to him :/

I hope someone comes into your house and smashes the shit out of your console and games, so that I could tell you "They're just video games."

Isn't that game pretty much what life is for a lot of people? Finding ways to get rich quick? They aren't bad people for doing it.

if you are referring to my friend playing destiny, he has no fun and only signs in to exploit strikes once a week. yes its like real life, a job. if destiny is like a job instead of a game, then its probably time to quit the game and play/do something else.

Maybe he has fun doing it? As long as he's not messing with anyone else, why not just let him play the game how he wants to?

I asked a question about it having an effect on peoples responses to the video. and now you cant get your knight lance out of my ass. thats whats going on, and thats all. good day.

he certainly is not and mentions it every time, or else why would he be playing as little as possible and avoiding the game hes actually playing. and I didnt say anything about impacting how he wants to spend his time with my opinion. hes an adult and can make that decision himself.

this makes sense to me, and is the only reason why I am still in the topic as it's more interesting to me than the moral side posturing. since I havent played it as much I can't relate but thank you for explaining.

You're right. I hope his memory cards and hard drives die.
That's slightly more comparable. I remember crying when I accidentally deleted my nearly completed Kingdom Hearts save in first grade. It sucked and I got over it. This is digital content. The only thing this kid lost was his time. In a few years, he's going to think back about all of this and cringe at how dumb he was.

I know, I was making a bit of a general remark given what I've read from some Gaffers seemingly okay with this kind of response to "annoying kids", or to "teach lessons".

The real story is even more sinister, as you've outlined. People that behave in this way regardless of the outcome to get to deleting someone's items are dicks. It's never a decent way to behave. Sure these are just video games but for some people it's all they really have in their lives. Call it sad if you must, but gaming is as much as a hobby as anything else and to wreck someone's achievements or work is distasteful at best. We've all known what it's like to grind or work towards a status, or piece of rare loot, or achievement.

Crazy how many people in this thread mention "exploits" in Destiny, as if cheesing things was the same as actual exploits. ^

So many sickos out there that sees it fit to judge a minor for lacking foresight. I guess now a days we expect even that much from children age 10 and below.
I can't even begin to understand how some of the adults in the community think that causing emotional distress to a minor is appropriate for teaching them a lesson or even worse see it as entertaining.
He simply allowed a PSN friend to "SharePlay", shareplay operated as designed. However this Kermit character decided to pray upon a defenseless youth through deception aimed at a minor and deleted most of his hard work.
There is no lesson to learn here other than shareplay is flawed by design and Sony will have to remove it or patch it ASAP, because apparently to some if you share play and lose your progress through malicious users its your own damn fault, you the victim brought this upon yourself.

That's slightly more reasonable. I remember crying when I accidentally deleted my nearly completed Kingdom Hearts save in first grade. It sucked and I got over it. This is digital content. I think everyone gets that, but a lot of people here are saying that it was deserved and they don't feel sorry like they were never kids at a time.
he certainly is not and mentions it every time, or else why would he be playing as little as possible and avoiding the game hes actually playing. and I didnt say anything about impacting how he wants to spend his time with my opinion. hes an adult and can make that decision himself.
I will say I'm not having fun if I keep dying in an RPG. That doesn't mean I should stop playing just because I'm losing. I'm sure he gets satisfaction out of leveling up.
