The colors of this photo will appear different to everyone. I think?

Has it been explained why the perception of color changes at times? I've been seeing black and blue all morning until a about an hour ago that I started to see the white and goldish.

Kinda cool.

I don't understand why everyone is freaking out. Colors look different depending on the lighting conditions.

Light sources? How do they work?

Some people's brains are filling in the gaps and presenting the dress as it would look in person. Others are seeing the dress as it was photographed.

Nope, always black and blue for me. Even in the pictures were the dress has been overly exaggerated with contrast or lightning. In those pictures the top of the dress is black/gold, but in the lower part it's mostly still black. When it comes to blue vs white, it's light blue, which is still blue!

It's not color blindness, it's a matter of perception/interpretation.
That's true for every color seeing - in the end it's your brain that decides what's what - but in this case the people who see this as white/gold are factually wrong, as the dress is not that color, and from what I understand it's due to small physical differences in the retina of the eye. Maybe color blindness is bad term for this. This is more like a selective optical illusion that some people fall for, and some don't I guess. As opposed to most other color optical illusions that everyone falls for.

its just an optical illusion where the colors are right inbetween a white and gold dress in blue light and a black and blue dress in yellow. i dont understand why that completley false tumblr explaination is still in the OP.

When you are looking at an image and it drastically changes colours as you look at it and it's not a .gif, then that's unusual as hell. This photo is a naturally occurring optical illusion that has fooled about 75% of the people who look at it. How is that not interesting?

People are still argueing about this like it's objective? This is how wars get started. My perception of the dress changes depending on how my eyes adjust from one minute to the next.

Because the way you perceive the image depends on what light sources you think are in the image.
If you think it's the sun outside and shade inside, you will see it as white and gold.
If you think it's the sun outside and a direct yellow spotlight on the dress, rather than just shade, you will see black and blue.

This picture was clearly white/gold the first 10 times it was shown to me. Now it's switched over to blue/black and I can't make it go back to the way its supposed to be :/

I'm still seeing blue and light brown (but I can tell it's black under a different light). So how the fuck are people seeing white? Brain trauma?

last night i saw white and gold

today i see blue and black

what the fuck

That's how I am today. I swear to god I saw white and gold yesterday on my phone and today I'm seeing blue and black on my phone. I feel like someone is pulling my leg here. -.-

In the correctly lit photos the dress is blue and brown, not blue and black.

I've seen the original image as both sets of colours, but I could only see it as blue very briefly.

Thing is that I saw the white and gold image on facebook and thought that it was just edited. I opened it in photoshop and it was still white and gold in my eyes, so I used the eyedropper tool and it was identifying the colors as I was watching them in the dress (still white and gold).

Then, a couple of minutes later, I see the same image from the same post on facebook and it looked clearly black and blue. Then I go to photoshop (I left the document open) and to my surprise, it looked fucking black and blue there as well.

said before but.... this morning it was white and gold and now its blue and what pretty much looks black except dark gold at the top. WTF

The dress is obviously blue and black.

Showed the pic to a friend of mine and he agrees.

Showed the pic to his wife and she says it's white and gold.

holy shit not a minute later and the blue is fading to white. i am now in a well lit room but for the last couple of hours my room was fairly dark (which made it look blue/black).

Wait...what...the...fuck...it literally changed to black and blue on my pc....Pulled it up on my phone and saw the same exact post in white and gold...Now i can morph it back and for at will (same thing with the twirling shadow lady gif).

My mind can't handle this.

It's blue and black, how FUCK can those colours be anywhere near white and gold.

Holy shit this is weird, especially the number of White/Gold responses haha!

It must have something to do with lightning. I saw the thread this morning, the dress was clearly white/gold and no matter what I tried (brightness, distance) I could not make it blue/black. Then I showed it to a friend in school (on the same laptop) and the exact same picture had turned blue/black (or at least blue/dark brown) and I couldn't believe my eyes. Now, I'm back home again and the dress is white/gold… This is messing with my mind.

If your photo is so washed out and poorly colour balanced that people have to debate the actual colour of its primary subject, it's time to take a new photo.

Let us stop our petty arguing and come together to vilify the creator of this travesty.

Yeah so I got the image, opened it in Paint and starting zooming in/out repeatedly and it switched from white/gold to black/blue.

Now i'm stuck with black/blue.

I think people missed the sarcasm in my post lol. Its not that I don't find it interesting. Its just a cool optical illusion.

I think the spinning dancer is a bigger mindfuck than this.
