PlayStation 4 hits 20.2 million units sold worldwide (high sodium content warning)

They usually don't and you know this.

Pathetic fanboys will always be pathetic fanboys, whether they've got a picture of Reggie, Kaz or Gabe above their fleshlight.

By rise above I really meant mocking consoles in their own communities, not "fighting in the trenches" so to say. Reading back a couple pages, I honestly haven't seen anything like that before.

I still think they would stick to their 10 year plan same as Sony does. But I think they would consider after 4 or 5 years at releasing a new Xbox built on a similar architecture. I would hope not... But it wouldn't suprose me.
it's been a year already, so wouldn't 4-5 be the usual cycle? i'd like another 7-8 year console gen but I can't say I'd be surprised if it doesn't last that long.
Yes, that's worldwide in case WW wasn't clear. It needs to bump up to about 1.37M/month WW to hit 25M by E3, but that's not impossible given the games coming out and it building steam in Japan.
WW was clear, I just didn't know the Ps4's selling feats was by that much on a total monthly basis. do you think it's possible they'll get to 25m before e3?

As I said, it's possible, but I would be surprised. There are some blockbuster titles and hardcore catering titles, but very few games earn the "console mover" badge. Arkham Knight could do that. As one poster said, he has friends who got PS4 to play it. Those titles generally sell very well. Japan is still anyone's guess, though this week with 45K and Monster Quest was encouraging. We'll see.

As someone who prioritizes the quality of the console experience and it's library over the success of it's brand, part of me does worry that this will lead to Sony resting on their laurels a bit and not focusing on exclusive games as much as I'd like. Why take risks when you're already on top? The PS3 had an awesome resurgence when Sony got desperate and had to save the console a few years into it's life. But I suppose this is still better than the console treading water and losing support...

PS2 was dominating and we got SOTC,GoW2 and GT4 just to name 3 games at the end of its life cycle, im not too worried.

Wait, why are people salty in this thread? 20.2 million sounds like good news for console fans (Xbox and PS4). Shows that the space is still healthy.

I get the feeling that if there was less "rubbing it in", there would be less salt about these kinds of things.

One begets the other.

Congrats to Sony. I have to say 20 million in such a short time is very impressive.
I don't know why people are mad tho. Both Nintendo and Microsoft fucked up badly at launch. The former being the worst offender while Sony did its best to hit the right notes all this time.
Who knew making the right decisions would eventually pay off?

Did Sony "rest on its laurels" when the PS2 was ROFLstoping everyone else?

you say you would be surprised, but early on, sony themselves said they were surprised this time last year when they hit the 5m mark.

I laughed at the thread title.

Amazingly good numbers for a console generation I barely hear anyone talk about. Maybe I've been around the wrong crowd?

Huh, I'm the one you responded to right ? Maybe I wasn't clear but I didn't mean you did anything wrong.
oh, okay. yeah it was a little unclear to me what you mean. you said "never change" and I take it now that means we should always let people in the know when they ask. =]

I don't understand PC gamers issue. There is a PC version to most games and more console sales means more 3rd party games which means more PC versions by default.

What's the problem?

same here, they have all the indies, big community, mods, steam, best multiplats and they still complain. lol makes no sense.

I don't think it's that short of an amount of time. if the momentum wasn't as strong as it was, what would be the expected sales by now? 15 mill?

Well, look at how sales did early on last year compared to January and February. I think the month over month increases would have to be better than last year, and there should be less consumers still without a PS4 that are willing to pay the $400 launch price, unless specific games are incentivizing them to do so. So it should be interesting.

you.. have a point. sales for the console will never be as good as the proximity to the launch.

unless... they do the $100 price cut this year?

I don't see a reason to expect more than a $50 cut, and not before E3. I'm sure that will depend on sales velocity relative to past performance and how their main competition is doing.

From no games and arrogant sony to resting on their laurels, we really have come full circle huh

To be fair to the guy Microsoft rested on their laurels since 2010 and they were not even market leader. So i can get there is some concern that Sony might do the same, but then you look at the PS2's output by 5 or so years in to its life cycle, and it was still getting tons of Sony first party support.

sony just doesn't seem the type to slash by just $50. if they're gonna do a price cut this year, it's gonna be $299.

I think it's more like to PS3. I don't know particularly though and I'd love to hear more stories about that Sony :)
you mean the guy is referencing how sony was handling the situation when they had the Ps3? yeah I guess that makes sense since they took a while to realize $600 was extremely unreasonable.

They've not done a revision of the console and it's not a safe bet to assume their costs have reduced that much otherwise. No reason to take a loss on a console when you're the leading platform.

600$ for what the console offered, it really was not unreasonable or overpriced at that time. It just wasn't a good price for the mass market, 400$ seems to be the top end most people want to pay for a console. 250-299$ seems to be the sweet spot for the mass market.

Should people not voice any potential concern? I didn't realize this was a celebration thread.
Good news or bad news, I always see the same concern and voiced opinion. While yours might be legit(even though there isn't evidence that's gonna happen), can't help but always meet this kind of posts with abit of cynicism.

Yup, pretty much. I suppose if this is your first sony console and you have been burn in the past with the competition I could understand just abit

I don't even get why some "pc gamers" are pissed off at this. What does it matter if consoles or PS4 does well it's not as if it would change much about the status quo or really achieve much of anything. Exclusives will continue to exist (hell if the PS4 was doing badly you'd expect more exclusives not less) and multiplatform development remains the same regardless. It's akin to throwing at tamptrum simply because you don't like something rather than a disliking something because it actively screws you over, it's pointless.

PC does well PS4 does well XB1 does alight I guess, multiplatform games remain multiplatform and paid for exclusives won't exactly jump ship.

As far as I can tell we have Several Major competitors(Sony/MS/Steam/Nintendo/Apple/Google/Amazon etc...) all finding ways to do successful business in one way or another in this industry

I cant see 2015 as anything but positive in one way or another

What exactly are people struggling with?

Why would Sony rest on their laurels? The only time they have seemed to do so was the PS3 launch and I believe they have learned their lesson from that for the time being. Sony has a great track record on exclusive releases throughout the consoles lifetime.

Resting on their laurels is probably a poor term for this but considering the sales and effect of multiplatform games, and the sales and effect of their own games so far, it wouldn't exactly be a shock to anyone if Sony's focus on exclusives significantly drops akin to end of X360 Microsoft due to the simple fact it doesn't really matter as much anymore. Indie exclusives will still be a thing they'd continue though due to comparative low costs and marketplace benefits in general.

I've mentioned this before, but maybe if there was less gloating... :)

That would be true if this conversation expanded beyond this thread. This is a Sony thread about Sony hardware being shared by Sony fans. You cannot consider anything gloating if it's being shared between ONE community, and if that community single out posters who come here with salt then that's got nothing to do with gloating. You cannot complain about getting burned if you choose to step into the flames willingly.

I think the salty people in here are salty because they feel aren't many compelling titles on PS4 that you can't play on other platforms (whether it's PC, XB1, or other Sony consoles). I happen to feel the same way.

People are buying PS4 to play 3rd party blockbusters like cod, gta, madden (at least in the US), and Destiny. We know this from NPD. Results are probably similar elsewhere in the world, just switch Madden for FIFA. There's nothing wrong with feeling that the PS4 has a strong library overall but also believing that the list of quality PS4 exclusives is meager.

I think a lot of people would be shocked if suddenly Naughty Dog, SSM, Media Molecule, Evolution, Guerrilla, Bend, Polyphony, et al just stopped making games.

Problem was Blu-Ray drive. IIRC, most expensive component in PS3 in that time. Sony need a big push in format war.

People would be completely shocked if Sony's first party studios stopped producing games.

So, you feel only Sony fans should be allowed in threads like these?

From a neutral standpoint, I'm not sure that's the most healthy way to approach this subject. Success stories like this should be able to be shared by the entire gaming community.

Not just shocked, but.... wait for it....... ... Dualshocked! TA- DAH!!!!
