Fraternity chanting the n-word

Jesus, this is disgusting. I mean.. what year is it?

One of the very few years in human history where something like this could explode and implicate all those involved, forcing swift action.

Most other years it wouldn't have been filmed, or those in power would have been okay with it, or depending on how far back you go would have actually done what the chant suggests.

It's sad though that men with no life exposure to black people being excluded from things legally are chanting about it.

That chant is, uh, way worse than I expected which is pretty impressive since I came into this thread thinking this will be pretty terrible.

In case anyone is curious and/or haven't seen it in action yet, this right here is why nothing will change regarding racism in America.

I disagree - I think stuff like this is small potatoes compared to actual hate and discrimination.

I don't think i'm willing to stick a "do not admit this guy to your school" on someone's record because they laughed at a racist chant or joke when they were 19.

Inexcusable. The institutional death penalty that was invoked was more than appropriate.

But how are those fraternities connected to the University?

Right now it seems its more like a private club of people.

They are basically private members ships. They connected to the university as a sort of club or campus organization, which allows the school to exert some level of control over the group. Also, they're connected in that membership in a chapter is restricted to only students of that school it's attached to.

I went to a college in the north east that had some black members in a largely white frat. but you're right. it's rare.

I think it may have to do with the makeup of the school in general too. I went to a STEM-only public school in the the rural part of the Midwest, and the majority of Greek Life was white, but that was because the school as a whole was largely white. My fraternity (which I helped as a founding member of my chapter) did have several minority members (our president during my time there was of Japanese descent), as well as several members who were international students. One of our founding members was also gay, and he was able to come out to not only his other friends but his family because we as the chapter were there for him. I'm in grad school now, but I keep in touch with them and they seem to be doing well to trying to find new members who would bring new experiences and life stories to their group.

Anecdotal and largely not representative in many criteria of what Greek Life is like at most institutions, but just wanted to chime in.

I agree. I've never been a fan of social media, however, without it I doubt this video would have circulated as fast as it did. The fact that they seem to be chanting it like a nursery rhyme they knew their whole lives probably means that the chant has been said many, many, many times before.

Of course you wouldn't.

These kids would have grown up to be the people on your list, and many of them still may. They will be in positions where they can affect the lives of people they were joking about hanging when they were college students in a fraternity.

Depends on the school and the frat, too. Older, larger state universities and the older, larger frats/sororities - I would not expect your story to be the norm.

I would not disagree with you (other than amending 'older, larger frats/sororities' to 'older, larger chapters'; mine is quite old and large on a national scale). My experience is, like I said, far from the norm in many respects.

Because in the end they were just chanting/joking/whatever some racist shit on a bus. I think this is pretty stupid and reprehensible, but I don't know if its something I want to see people kicked out of school for either.

Yeah those poor racists, really wouldn't want them kicked out of school. These kids NEED to be kicked out because that means there will be however many less racists lawyers, DAs, senators, governers etc.

I just watched Dear White People.. quite coincidental

The national organization seems to have had a swift response. Good for them.

We know.

And when they get there, they will all congratulate themselves for such extensive use of their bootstraps and be proud that they did it all by themselves.

And then you wonder how the people in power seem to have such a warped view on the life circumstances of others.

Racist assholes chanting something this disgusting do not need to be in school or any institution.

Bullshit! My chapter did so much to raise awareness of blacks and women abuse. We picked up over 1,200 lbs of trash on the highway and donated all the money from the aluminum cans we collected to Safehouse Progressive Alliance. It was nearly 5,000 dollars. It would have been 5k but Ronnie picked up some kegs to cele' that shit! But then a couple girls said they were "assaulted" at that rager so I guess we have to call that a wash?

Keep this posted/available on social media/wherever. List every member identified in the video in conjunction with it. Any internet search for any of those names should result in this being the first link on the list. Good-bye careers.

I can't get behind this trend. Crush them with meaningful punishment now, yes, but the thirst for blood in the form of a life sentence is poorly thought out. This theme came up in the thread about the aftermath of the "AIDS in Africa" tweet.

Do we no longer believe in second chances and rehabilitation?

I'm going to say it. Talking about this type of stuff with white people in real life, or online makes me want to sometimes just say "White people don't give a fuck". But then I realize that it's probably that mindset of broad strokes, that has lead to this "race" bullshit destroying so many lives and being a plague on history.I just don't get it, why in the world is that so many people find it okay to look down on others without even thinking twice? And these are the future leaders?

Why in the world is that white people who do this shit, always get defended? What about first chances and rehabilitation for niggers?

But why do they have HQ, are sometimes organized like a business, have a hierarchy and these things?

And how are fraternities connected to the university?
National fraternities have chapters at multiple colleges/universities. They have an HQ to provide a central office for the entire (student and alumni) membership which can coordinate record keeping, provide administrative support, print materials (such as membership books,) have consultants that can go on site, etc... Local fraternities, those that only have a chapter at one school, are usually small, die comparatively quickly, and don't even give the nominal nod to community service or student support that the nationals do.

Generally, there's no official direct connection to the university, the school doesn't fund them. But there are administrative bodies that have enough de facto power that if a fraternity does something like this, the school could take action against them (exactly which actions they could take would probably vary from campus to campus.)

A friend of mine was a "leadership" consultant for a national fraternity who went to various chapters to help them with activities they needed help with, recruitment, fundraising, community service activities, chapter closure, scholastic achievement, etc... He called me about a year in to it and confessed that he thought he was becoming an alcoholic from it. Apparently, the chapters all took his visit as an invitation to show the "guy from national" as good of a time as they possibly could.

This would be assuming that these kids actually are virulent racists and will never change. I don't know about that.

Again, I would feel differently if these dudes were actually threatening or menacing minority students with their behavior, getting into fights, or otherwise getting violent or intimidating - but chanting some stupid racist song on a bus?

It's bad but everyone realizes how many racist kids there probably are at a place like OU right? Any big school. Every school, to some extent.

These clowns are about to learn a valuable lesson in life (presumably). Good thing they're white; they're starting off with an advantage.

I will never understand how people can be this stupid.

They didn't figure they'd be filmed among brethren.

They looked like they were dressed for formal. Formal's are usually a frat-sorority only event.

I wonder what else they were chanting on that bus.

In any event, this will get their charter revoked until the story dies and they come back on campus next year.

Fucking idiots.

I'm with Enron on this though. I'd like for them to be punished severely and take on some sensitivity classes, but I don't think there's a need to kick them out of school for it. Odds are most of these dumbasses will grow up and regret their stupidity. They'll be ashamed and be humbled by this experience, hopefully.

Just heard about this, and would've been surprised if they even survived the night.
Nope. Good riddance.

They need to change their name to Kappa Kappa Kappa

You can't be serious. These racist idiots will end up in positions of power where they will have the ability to affect thousands of lives, including people they would have hanged on a tree. Jesus Christ.

Racial bias at its finest.

lol, i don't think they are coming back next year. They are probably looking at a several-year suspension from campus. There were a couple of frats at my school that did some dumb shit that could you could have argued wasn't anywhere close to this and they got nuked for a good long while.

That's certainly an emotional distortion of my words and their meaning. To be clear, I share this sentiment concerning all social media induced lynch mobs.

...

They'll regret being caught, yes.

Fraternities are corporations.
Once this went public, there was no option for salvation.
Note that the call came down from their HQ. They had to protect the brand.

Whose to say that they aren't and that they will change? I don't think there should be second chances in this case. These guys have done nothing to show that they deserve it. Lets let someone who isn't a racist be in a position of power instead of taking a chance on someone who is in the hopes that he might change.

There is no way they'll be humbled by this experience. They've evidently been chanting this kinda shit for awhile. Maybe even for years. Yea no, we need less people like this in school asap. It's straight up hate speech, it isn't funny or excusable in anyway shape or form.

No, odds are that they will continue to be racist. This whole "they are just dumb kids" "they can change give them time" mentality is dumb and shows just how many of you aren't living in reality.
