PS4's AF issue we need answers!

Dragon Age: Inquisition has some AF issues too. Maybe not just on PS4, though. I have noticed it in Dying Light and Evolve especially when I'm looking directly at the ground while moving forward. It's quite easy to see the higher quality textures and models just pop in to view as soon as you cross that imaginary line on the ground.

This is god awful.

They simply can't ignore it anymore.

DmC literally looks like shit in a lot of places because of that.......

I'm thinking its something tied to ue3 implementation on ps4.

Or something to do with cross gen porting methods that are being used on ps4.

If more original built from the ground up ps4 titles have it and cross gen or HD ports don't I think its got to just be a bug in how legacy renderers are ported.

Well, I think it does have to do with "how much care" is given to a game... but even then, you do not see something like 8x or 16x even when it is there.

Evolve having little to no AF was the one that surprised me the most. Crytek is THE premier multiplatform team in terms of sacrificing performance for small visual qualities... that not having it surprised me. And that isnt some legacy renderer... it is a new version than the one found in Ryse.

Has anyone approached any of the individual developers and got an answer yet for a specific title? These threads have been running a long time on educated guesses.

Pixlexic

You probably didn't DBZ DF Face-Off, don't ya?

'For console owners it's a fixed image, and save for a discrepancy in texture filtering during one cut-scene (a quirk that favours Microsoft's platform), both PS4 and Xbox One offer the same sub-PC visual settings across the board.'

AF in DBZ on PS4 is fine, although, AF on both platforms is weak. AF in DMC is another story.

Thanks OP for creating this tread. If we don't get an answer as to why, at least this thread may prevent more occurrences in the future through greater awareness.

I think that's the main issue, a complete lack of awareness.

NX Gamer seems to have a interesting theory, go watch his DmC youtube video for a good explaination.

This I consider the fact that it is a thing at all to indicate a problem.. but yes... tons is perhaps not the right word.

"numerous" is better.

THe idea that you get "more bandwidth" from switching to a lower level API, enough to enable something as tiny (resource wise) as AF... is a bit silly IMO. Also, it assumes that the non-metal level API of the PS4 is shit, or that devs even make heavy use of it. Two things we cannot possibly know about.

have a link please?

His guess (a pure guess in the strongest sense of the word) is that devs on the PS4 are not using its lower level do it yourself API... and that this accounts tot hem having to sacrafice more graphical options.

This really doesnt make sense... because how could then the xb1, with its worse available bandwidth, compete when it ALSO in such situations would be using its more dx11 styled API. The theory doesnt hold water or make sense.

Its like 1% of the total amount of games on the system.

If even that percentage.

Send a letter to the developers and see if you get any sort of response. Sony doesn't code these games.

It is an odd issue, with the games that actually have an issue. I've run 16xAF on all my PC games for the past decade+. And I've never had a powerful system. I have never noticed a performance hit while using 16x AF, but the increase in IQ is quite noticeable.

Thats indeed way more than one occasion, one engine etc...

Those excuses are not valid anymore.

Its not U3 thing. Dont know what this is, but this needs to get shorted.

I doubt anything will happen, something could happen. Either way games will be sold, money will be made. It's a non issue really. This is a small corner in a very large room that's in a big house, easily lost.

An ICE Team member states that it's not hardware related.

So they are saying it's something we have to ask the developers. I mean when you have some games that do it well and some games that don't then questioning the developers makes sense.

I honestly don't even notice this stuff when playing dbz. (or any game)

As a whole, the gameplay is unaffected. Im surprised its hurting ppls enjoyment of these games to a "god awful" degree

Sony should mandate the usage of AF at least to begin with. It need not be 16x rather its existence would be a start in the right direction. It's becoming quite the eyesore and claiming the HW is capable is pointless if the implementation of the feature is non existent.

I was watching DSP play GTA Online last night (PS4 version) and the AF was loading all over the place, even on buildings and stuff, not just the ground.
Does this happen on the X1 version as well?, it was really distracting.
By the way, GTA on next gen looks really good besides the AF problems, i was surprised how good it looked at times.

DBZ only has poor af in cut scenes in game it's the same as xb1.

ITS ONE CUTSCENE

lol

I think DF knew what they were doing when they even put that into the analysis. I mean who comments on a single cutscene of an entire game having a difference between 2 versions? Its a non-issue they turned into an issue. Instant clicks.

Considering that this is not hardware related, it should not be an issue at all.
I'd like to know, have any PS4 games with bad AF been fixed via a patch?

Could anyone with the right connections please contact one of the developers who released a game with missing AF on PS4 and ask for an explanation?

I'm so glad that when I'm playing games, I can't see stuff like this. I only see it in still images... and half the time I only see it when it's circled in red, or has an arrow pointing to it...

You are on the internet. The smallest annoyance or insult becomes a life changing and devastating event that requires years or therapy to overcome. So it goes to be said that lazy porting and IQ issues are going to be the worst thing since Hitler.

Nah it's not there fault why would I ask them anything? Sony/Playstation needs to answer for this! /s

According to NX Gamer seems like all the games so far with AF issues are based on DX11 API ports so XB1 has the advantage due to last gen XB360 used ESRAM & DX11, but for PS4 its API for AF needs work specific to its hardware which some developers did not want to look into their games in porting.

Eh?, DBX has some of the worst AF of any PS4 game (i don't know if its the same on X1).

Just watch this video from 2:60 onwards -

360 didn't use esram or dx11
