Bloodborne: Impressions After 40 Hours (EDGE)

Totally off topic. . .is there any way to supress gifs either in quotes or something - because seriously loading these pages with everyone replying to the same gif multiple times in a page is getting nuts.

I find it strange that they say the game feels like it has less replayability than the previous games. They didn't beat it so how can they tell? I'm sure it has new game +.

I never preorder anything but I just went for the collector's edition after reading the OP. I haven't been let down by a game in the Souls series yet and I'm sure this will be wonderful.

Now imagine if it was Black World Tendency and they were all black phantoms.

But that Change.org petiton about betraying PC players, you mean it won't work? I also like how selfish that petition is as they forgot about Xbox.

Even better though, that whole Dark Souls series wouldn't exist if not for Demons Souls, a joint effort of SCEJ and FROM like Bloodborne.

Moving on from the port begging, this game looks amazing and from the OP sounds amazing. I too am disappointed on the weapon count that we know of, though I only really farmed items for lore and trophies in Demon Souls. The art style is awesome and having more weapon variety is always a good thing. I'm not sure what they mean about less replayability though. Surely this game must have a new game+ and such.

"If you thought From Software was going soft, Hidetaka Miyazaki is about to put you brutally back in your place. And if you've been watching this generation from the sidelines, unmoved by the remasters and rush jobs while you wait for the first true essential to arrive, now's the time. As if there was ever any doubt, Miyazaki and his team have done it all over again."

All I needed to read. I am prepared to be pounded into dust over and over again and would expect nothing less.

Damnit, you're right. xD

I make mistakes like that all the time...I have two sentences in my head for what I want to say and then they come out fused together like that and are wrong.

It bothers me a bit too much I think.

It's fine, haha. Just have to be careful with your words in a thread full of hype, salt and sarcasm.

Bloodborne |OT| Hype, salt & sarcasm.

As it should.

Agreed. References the game itself and also just sounds perfect for the kind of game that it is, also leaves the (correct) idea that the hunt is only beginning, and we're gonna play this for a long time.

"And so the nightly hunt beings" >>>>>> exclusivity joke or whatever funny title.

IMO -- You can make really pretty faces in both dark souls games. So I would be surprised if it weren't possible in Bloodborne.

Here are some of my dark souls 1 characters:

What I really hope from the combat system is that there are neat little execution tricks that I can practice and specialize in like the ravioli step in Dark Souls (i.e. backstep > timed direction input in the opposite direction > instant forward-stepping backstep attack), and the animation cancels in Dark Souls II (i.e. continually backstep canceling the ultra great swords' backstep-R1's to dance around and bait rolls). I find the strictness and precision required for these techniques exhilarating and feel they've done well to draw me away from my only true video game addiction: fighting games.

Ravioli is in. Toggling doesnt seem to be in, neither does attack canceling, although you can dash cancel to another direction.

I personally would not like to see the type of backstepping from DS2. The I frames are way too much and make using a large weapon against someone who does that almost impossible.

The best thing about the Bloodborne pc petition is that over 10,000 people signed the thing addressed to the wrong company cause FromSoft dont even own the BB IP so its all moot.

I've got so many I dont know what to do with them anymore. But I think its gonna be
"and so the nightly hunt begins"

Yes, yes. I've been saying since discussions started on it (besides my jokes). That is an amazing OT title. It sounds like the start of something, although I would alter it to "Let the nightly hunt begin"

This. I'm actually pretty surprised so many people are dismissing Soul's wonderful array of weapons as garbage just because there is a new game out. Looking just at greatswords for DS2 you can choose between the Defender greatsword, Ruler's sword, Claymore, Watcher greatsword and Bluemoon greatsword all of which play very differently. And that's just one weapon class.

Well I personally don't love it nor hate the idea of it, not until I play it and see how it all works . I haven't had any chance to play it but the play style is not quite Souls as we know it, so who knows if the lesser amount of weapons (which at this point we don't know the total amount, plus I'm confused if this 6 found amount is on top of any starting ones, or if the merchant sells any) will make a huge impact for people or not. Maybe. Also it seems like the guns will play a big roll in the combat since on top of the 6 found melee weapons didn't they find 6 guns as well?

I can understand the hesitation since we've all been trained on 3 Souls games on what they've given us, but this is new and there could be a big reason for the departure. Plus the they might figure the transformation for the weapons automatically gives you two possible weapons off the bat.

Further evidence that they don't really care about the game, just wanted it not to be *exclusive*. hahaha

They based their replay value comment on the number of unique weapons found throughout their 40 hour playthrough. As if that was indicative of the replay value of the game in and of itself.

Honestly it's a silly line that someone should have talked the author out of posting because now it's all anyone wants to talk about (that and there being only 6 weapons in the ENTIRE game).

What differentiated those weapons other than skin - it's what they could do. Who is to say there isn't a Bloodgem for each of the Rulers, Defenders and Moonlight that alters the weapon based on what gem you have. New gem. New playstyle.

Yup

Bloodborne |OT| And so the exclusive hunt begins

alternate: And so the exclusivity begins

No exclusivity garbage with the OT title, please. We don't need to bog down what is likely a great game that will elicit fun discussions with dumb system wars stuff.

The last few pages of this thread are a complete shit show. Does every Bloodborne thread have to be this?

Edit: more appropriate party calling this out two posts above. Fair.

I'll be concerned if the game comes out and there are like 10 weapons total. Until then it's speculation in my opinion. The reviewer could have missed a ton of stuff, they could be playing a build that doesn't have all the drops, etc.

If you didn't know about weapon crafting from boss souls in DS1/2, you end up missing a lot of potential weapons.

Also people should go and think back to how many weapons they really used in a playthrough of one of the Soul games. Outside of upgrading, it's like three or four for me. This shit isn't Diablo.

Turn gifs off in your Gaf control panel top right.

That's because people here only ever focus on the negative. You may as well tell reviewers to stop criticizing stuff they don't like.

Or you know people on PC really love these types of games. I won't lie messing up that petition is pretty idiotic, but I don't doubt PC users truly want the game. Dark Souls II sold ~one million copies on Steam.

this might not be a popular opinion but i really don't like how "badass" the character animations and weapons etc are, at least from what i've seen.

i miss this:

to me that's what the Souls series was about.. your character being a weakling. now it seems they've gone fully badass :( if i wanted to be a fast-moving ninja busting combos and shit, i'd play Ninja Gaiden. i LOVED the feeling of being a weak nobody in Demon's Souls, just trying to survive against the odds.. that's what initially drew me in. i want more of that.

oh well, i'm sure the game will be fine still. i just really hope i get to play as a pathetic weakling for at least the first few hours. don't immediately give me a giant hammer and a shotgun please.. after 20 hours maybe.

I have played every game in the series, Demon's twice and I never bloody put that together.

MY GOD.

But no such sets right?

Well you choose an Origin (backstory) which comes with it's own stats and amount of blood echos (souls) and then they make you choose a weapon.

So not really any different from before in my opinion.

Uh I don't think your character is ever considered a 'weakling' in the Souls games. You're always referred to as a hero or a powerful warrior.

It's not a souls game. Dark Souls 3 is probably still comming.

Also...yeah... such a weakling:

I am sure Dark souls 3 will help you there

Since this is a new IP i expected things to be different which they are.

It's a new game so I think you have to leave a bit of the Souls expectations at the door. But I have no doubt that a Dark Souls 3 will be made. It's probably a couple years off though. I know I'd love to get more Souls style games, but I'm also super jazzed for something that's a bit different.

Game sounds awesome based on the impressions.

I think GAF has too much of a tendency to throw things they previously liked under the bus for the sake of jumping on the newest hype train, and I don't think that is entirely fair. As Miyazaki says in the interview, decisions in the game design aren't necessarily a sign of disapproval or dissatisfaction with previous game's designs. They're just different decisions for a different game, and that's okay.
