Bloodborne: Impressions After 40 Hours (EDGE)

I find it strange that they say the game feels like it has less replayability than the previous games. They didn't beat it so how can they tell? I'm sure it has new game +.

The are referring to the brutal difficulty. The reviewer is obviously struggling with the game. They dont think players will want to go back a 2nd time. Remember, no multiplayer, they have to solo every enemy.

HELL YES!!!!

I don't really get why they are acting as though the Souls games were not horror games. They very much were. They might not have been "survival horror" exactly, but then neither is Bloodborne. Good horror is all about the atmosphere and sense of dread. The gore factor is entirely secondary, and the Souls games had some of the best atmosphere ever, especially Demon's.

Sounding really good but I still can't decide whether to get this or to get Borderlands: The Handsome Collection this month.

Apologies if it's been discussed and I missed it, but have they touched on how approachable Bloodborne is for newcomings to their games?

I briefly played Demon's Souls (PS+ freebie), couldn't get into it, and thus never touched the Dark Souls games. Bloodborne is peaking a bit of interest from me, but I'm worried about the brutal difficulty, cheap deaths, and replaying large chunks that (I've heard) were staples of the Souls games. Restarting lengthy sections and boss fights over and over and over again is a huge turn-off to me.

Wait, are there no summons? No MP/online of any kind?

WTF, I missed this? When was this? I live in the US

Yes there is MP/Online.

But it's not going to be acitvated until the game is released so the people at Edge writing the preview had to play the whole thing without online features

I got both pre-ordered digitally. Probably a mistake since I want to play Bloodborne, but I know Borderlands will get most of my attention. Regardless, both games will get a lot of play through the summer.

Because they weren't. A thick atmosphere does not horror make. Of course, there were sections of each game that stepped into horror territory, like Tower of Latria and Tomb of Giants. Lots of series use this tactic to keep things fresh. Metroid, Half-Life... Hell, even Zelda and Uncharted do it. None of those are horror series though.

Making the jump into the genre and am pretty hyped but worried I'm not going to like it. Got it for 35 at Dell so I'm only going to be out a few bucks if I have to trade it in.

Edge only finding 6 weapons in 40 hours is pretty disappointing.

But they said there's more customization with the switch weapons. So I don't see how it really matters. Dark Souls 2 had "more" weapons, but 85% of each weapon class shared movesets and the main differences were slight adjustments to AR, stat requirements and weight.

None of those games had the kind of atmosphere Demon's Souls had. Half-Life 2 came close with Ravenholm, but it was a single level. I'm sorry, but you must not have seen very many horror movies before 2000, where most splattergore and torture porn from about that time on is supposedly "horror". Demon's is very much a horror game. Dark less so, but the elements are still there. And yeah actually, a thick and oppressive atmosphere where you're fearing what's around the corner is horror. That's actually also what makes the best kind of horror movies.

A quick and generic search brings up:

While I generally agree with you, the horror aspects of the Dark Fantasy genre are very different than the horror aspects of Gothic Horror, and by most people's perceptions I think Gothic Horror is more easily recognizable as a central to the genre.

My God. I did Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 offline/solo. It was incredible.

I wonder if the fact that there aren't 467 different weapons is that the weapon categories are less which, my opinion, might allow them to focus on more unique armaments?

Quality > quantity

I don't really enjoy finding a billion weapons and sitting on stats screens obsessing over what I should have equipped. There's usually a lot of throwaway bullshit in these instances. Obviously I like a little freedom of choice but that doesn't sound like it's going to be an issue either.

So, are we in agreement that "six weapons" is the official clickbait controversy for Bloodborne?

I swear, every game in recent memory has to have one, be it warranted or not.

It's both a good and a bad thing.

Bad in the sense that there is less options for you as a player, so a bit less re playability and variation in combat.

Good in the sense that now it is REALLY REALLY unlikely that there will be some broken combination of weapons that the guys didn't foresee.

Uh I don't think your character is ever considered a 'weakling' in the Souls games. You're always referred to as a hero or a powerful warrior.

Yeah. The voice over at the end of Demon's Souls says something like "
A new hero was born, one of unprecedented power
." Your character is super strong.

I never really used that many weapons in the souls games anyway. Id end up upgrading one so much that id stick with it for most of the time because I spent so much on it and it was more powerful than anything id find

Don't even get me started on Movies :p

Anyway I would argue Metroid did, and still does in more recent games (especially Echoes). As far as Demon's Souls, other than The Tower of Latria, I just don't agree. But that's fine haha.

It's not a souls game. Dark Souls 3 is probably still comming.

Also...yeah... such a weakling:

yea.. not from Demon's Souls. there was nothing quite that badass. it was a much less over-the-top game and avoided making you feel too much of an invincible hero quite nicely.

They've got you covered.

yea i'm pinning my hopes on that. hopefully no ridiculous looking ninja moves with that.

If you're expecting the different classes to have different animations/abilities, you're going to be disappointed.

Has it been mentioned if there is some kind of punishment if you die in this game like the Souls series?

Same as the Souls series, except sometimes on death an enemy can take your blood stain and you have to kill that enemy to get your blood back.

Read this :

First 18 Minutes

Skip to 3:50 in that video(Beware it spoils the Hub Area). Youll notice 3 slots above where the weapon stats and scaling are. Im assuming this is what will indicate what kind of upgrade you have on your weapon. Watching a bit further when the player equips the weapons shows those slots filled in with a sort of picture. Possibly indicating what goes where.

I think weapon customization will be a big thing. Especially if we can put 3 different modifiers on 1 weapon.

Its amazing how this developer and series went from niche import game no one thought would ever get released in the us to a major exclusive system seller and flagship game for sony.

Which is good, because holy crap did a few huge things slip through the cracks in Dark Souls 1.

To be fair, this was after your character has murdered his/her way up the list of One One's flunkies. You'll have imbued yourself with the souls of countless demons, including some really mean bastards. Anyone who kills something called
The Dragon God (no matter now lame the "fight" part of that was).
isn't anyone to sneeze at. The Slayer of Demons was a name you earned.

Having said that, your character was still ballsy enough to prance into the fog where countless people had already disappeared to and the only one to ever make it out was Vallarfax of the Twin Fangs. You can't really call anyone with such brassy balls a weakling.

i know :( i'll just use the least badass weapons and clothes i can find and shut up i guess.. are there at least simple spears or a katana or something? (with no silly transforming stuff)
