Let see for the Jotaro part, for now I liked how they handle the Joseph part more than the OVAs

the OVAs have this session too brief for building meaningful tension, but now the worrying part is.. the Jotaro's part in danger to felt dragged.

I don't see it, they have four chapters to put into the episodes next week. (the fight plus another chapter).

The least violent Stand user manages to take out two of our heroes. Funny how that works.

I liked the added touch of making Jotaro seem a bit nervous in the very last shot, despite him looking all confident earlier. Next week should be gooooood.

Also dat ending...

it's interesting how D'Arby was counting on Joseph cheating for his own cheat to work. if Joseph hadn't cheated, he'd have been in trouble instead.

Not really, he only need to see if the tension was at maximum and have the chocolate melt, Joseph cheating only sped up the process.

but if Joseph hadn't cheated, his coin would have gone in when it was his turn since he filled it only to reduce 1 coin worth of liquid. also, couldn't he also see the tension limit, just like D'Arby?

although maybe he was so focused on his trick that he forgot to observe the tension carefully.

He would just use 2 instead, but its really safe bet Joseph use some kind of trick.. all the bad guy must have their scouting report at this point.

What a great episode and impressive stand user. The mindgames are fantastic, and yeah, loved the "Go ahead Mr Joestar" bit.

dude what

how can you not consider the chocolate cheating? barbie literally says "Its not cheating if I didn't get caught" eg "if jotaro had seen me apply the chocolate, it would have totally been busted for cheating"

lets not forget that Obie was the one to cheat first. Do you expect the protags to not cheat in return and thereby make it fair? you know what, even if he didn't cheat the protags would be justified in cheating because they're literally trying to rescue a man's soul.

Would you prefer that they win through the sheer power of their peerless friendship?

I would have been impressed if Jotaru and co could win without cheating, it would have been good writing and made us feel good. Joseph could have won just by being empowered through determination to save polnareff and the undying faith of Jotaru. Many of JJBA best moments came from determination and faith so a win in such manner would have been great. We shouldnt support cheaters. I believe the chocolate thing could have benefitted both players. The oil added hurts the following player with only a benefit to one player, which is where the problem in this scenario is. If D'arby has used oil then I wouldn't have an issue since hes an antagonist but its old Joseph using oil, its like hes the Lance Armstrong of surface tension.

D'arby the gambler part 1
This episode is GOOD!
Minor complain, Star Platinum got nerfed in this episode, there's no way Jotaro could have miss chocolate in the bottom of the glass. But eh, screw it. It's time for Kujo "pokerface" Jotaro to show his stuff.

I honestly think you do this to fuck with people.

You don't understand how JJBA works

Still sticking on my idea that Joseph jobbed here and would have been better if it was Jotaro who took the fall.

I tried rationalizing why Joseph was defeated, but still the real one at fault here is Jotaro for not seeing D'Arby cheat in the first place.

He got too overconfident in his skills. Still, this was the moment in the show for him to shine, so it's a shame he got taken out.

It's probably more that Jotaro expected the cheating to occur during the actual game, and not before. It's why he noticed Joseph using the cotton ball but didn't notice the chocolate until examining the cup after the game was over.

Of course, Jotaro is going to be a lot more wary of cheating before and during the game he's going to play with D'arby. It's why he picked poker as the game, because D'arby's hands and fingers are always going to be in full view.

Well, Joseph couldn't even have a last second realization of how he could win. Once the thought of him losing came to mind, D'Arby's stand kicked in.

This is pretty much how I looked at it. Joseph didn't know that if he admitted defeat in his mind, he'd actually lose. I don't like the fact that Joseph got taken out like that, but at least he didn't lose like Polnareff did or just by being an idiot.

Just rewatched the second half. The tension at the end after Jotaro challenges D'Arby to poker is just so goooooood.

In response to this post, I'm going to use Joestar Special Determination Faith Move #26 (patent pending)

guys pls don't bully DTL, we don't have another one.

it's true that Joseph is still the best JoJo but sadly the main character now is Jotaro.

great start for Barbie, I'm also very much looking forward to the stand user that comes after him.

Smokey could see Joseph faintly glowing back when he did the bottle cap trick. It's likely that a lifelong hustler like D'Arby, even if Dio never told him about the Ripple, would have realized that something was fishy if Joseph suddenly touched the glass and something strange started happening to the liquid/he could faintly see sparking. Then he'd either call Joseph out on using some kind of trick, or just wait a few seconds for the Ripple to run out and the liquid to overflow, which would count as Joseph's loss.

Why would the Ripple be cheating though? In universe, it's a skill that has to be trained and mastered, rather than a random super power like the Stands. It'd be like saying that being too good at putting coins in the cup is cheating too.

A magic power that holds water in place would be cheating.

You guys need to watch Kaiji if you haven't.

I don't necessarily care about the gambling aspect of it, but the concept of people trying to constantly outsmart each other in clever ways. It's part of the reason why I enjoyed Death Note, for example. If Kaiji's like that, I'll check it out.

Kaiji is totally like that. The author pretty much only writes mind game gambling manga and is well known for it. Gambling is the perfect outlet for that kind of constantly outsmarting and clever tricks you want.
Also I just really want more people to watch Kaiji.
Go watch Kaiji please.

Ha, well sounds like my kind of show, then. I'll definitely have to check it out.
