How many character(s) do you get to select and change the portrait of? Are there voice options or do males and females have a default set of voices for actions? Also, do you have to write a biography of sort for your character(s) like in Wasteland 2?

Well you have your main character, but you can also hire adventurers at inns and you can fully customize them. The companions you meet along the way have fixed portraits and appearances of course, as well as their own personalities voices, backgrounds and agendas. They are entirely optional however so you could have a party made up entirely of characters you created A la icewind dale.

There are voice options for your character. I want to say 4 male and 4 female but it might be 3 each.

I saw a biography page in the character screen. in the backer beta its prefilled based on the background you chose at caracter creation. Dont know how it will work in the full game.

Initially just the one main character you play as, but you can create other characters by hiring Adventurers and use them instead of the companions in the game. Though they can cost a fair amount of money to do so. You can have up to 5 other party members along with your main character at one time. Don't know if there is a limit to the number of Adventurers you can make. There are 5 voice options for each gender I think not that they actually speak any of the dialogue just combat grunts and short statements like in BG. And no you don't write any kind of biography for the characters, but you do pick certain things like occupation and homeland in the CC.

Thanks guys!

Do you guys think/know if gog version will keep up with patching? I'd like to avoid steam but I wonder if patches will be up at the same time or not.

I'm guessing if there's any difference, it will be a thing of hours, Steam is likely to be updated first, because it rolls out to abunch of people automatically. But I don't think it's going to be a big gap at all.

Also, Steam is awesome, resistance is futile! :p

I have discovered a plethora of good potential character portraits. I may have to enlist people's help in deciding between them.

If you would mind sharing them that would be great! I've been looking around myself for some. It's hard to find that brushed look for portraits to stick with the style.

so I got this bug (no, not a beetle) and I think I'm screwed.

I was exploring the Dyrford Ruins for a bit. Killed some cultists, spotted some traps (but couldn't disable them), went back outside and decided to return to the Dracogen Inn for some needed rest.

Edge of the map, travel, go to Dyrwood Village... "it will take you 0 seconds"... ok?

Then I'm spawned in front of the church in the village, and all my characters are stuck. Fuck.

Reloaded an earlier save, tried to go to the Gorge. "6 hours"... that seems fine to me.

Spawned in the face of a cliff, and all my characters are stuck.

ARGH.

Ha, I got this one too.

How is the writing and setting so far? Interesting like Torment?

closer to Baldur's Gate. The spiritual successor to PS:T is Torment: Tides of Numenera. Unless you already knew that :P

I managed to "fix" this by going to an even earlier save (that I had actually made by mistake) and everything is fine now. It wasn't THAT big of a hassle, just a couple of cultists I avoided instead of killing (like on the bugged save). Oh well, at least it's fine now.

wait a second, I just read that there's no spell power progression in Pillars (aka the good old +1d6 damage per level). Is that correct?

See if you can reproduce that spawn bug guys, do you have to go to the Temple of Skaen through the Dyrford Crossing? I haven't been able to reproduce it yet.

I've been browsing through this site here for female portraits. Not all of them are in the right art-style, so it takes some digging if you specifically want that look, but there are tags on all the pictures to whittle it down.

I've narrowed my own portrait down to 5 potential candidates. The concept still being a rapier/estoc-wielding Vailian Republic Noble Cipher:

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

I'm soooooo scared this game will be ruined by bugs like that...

Eh Cipher question, in a video about the class that was posted a couple weeks back, it showed that you need to be "close" or "near" or whatever the wording was to enemies to use the psychic whip thing to get your focus back, but how close is that? I've seen people recommend using Cipher with a ranged weapon, does that just mean you stay kinda close to stuff but still out of melee range or is the range actually pretty decent on it? Probably going to use one in my first party and atm trying to figure who's going where and what weapons they're gonna be using.

It's an Obsidian game. There will be lots of bugs. Keep many, many save files if you plan on playing the game on release.

It's an Obsidian game with no publisher oversight.

Considering that QA departments and bug-fixing timeframes are usually dictated by the publisher, this means a lot. Pillars' release date was set by Obsidian alone.

You should keep multiple save files for every game that allows it, though. I'll never understand the people that don't.

Also, the wider and longer the game, the more bugs will naturally just be there. People are still patching BG2 and Arcanum remains borderline unplayable. Save, save often and save on no less than 3 slots. These are the words of wisdom our forefathers inscribed into the annals of gaming history, so they may not ever be forgotten.

But some things that should not have been forgotten were lost.
