BLOODBORNE Spoiler Thread (read OP)

Okay, thanks guys :). Guess I'll be buying it then.

Edit: my colleague who talked to me about the souls games must suck at gaming then.

It's just that the learning curve is so much larger than most games nowadays that people give up too easily. This game rewards failure, the more you fail in the beginner the better you get. Once you get past the initial hump, you'll realize that these games are a blast. Personally it took me back to playing side-scrolling 2D classics when I first got into gaming, a lot of focus in learning the environments and enemy movements.

All this also amounts to a massive sense of accomplishment when you beat the bosses or the game itself, more than I ever feel for most games I play.

Yeah. I'd like to play this in front of my wife. So that option to tone down the blood would be helpful.

Does blood no longer equal gore? :)
"Blood" and "gore" are often considered separate things, hence the phrase "blood and gore" (note they're listed separately, and together describe the aftermath of violence). "Gore" is physical mutilation, dismemberment, spilt entrails, etc. Blood is, well, blood. From a nosebleed to a gushing stream.

The blood in this game is oddly beautiful, the way it's depicted. It makes your cloak sleek and crimson. What's unsettling about Bloodborne isn't the blood, but just the general dreariness of the world, and the haunted inhabitants therein. :-O

To add on to the other replies, you can also, occasionally, run past all the trash mobs to get back to your bloodstain. Not sure if this holds true to bloodborne, but in previous games, no mobs will follow you once you've gone through the fog to fight a boss.

There is, however, a slight animation delay while walking through the fog which can get interrupted if you get hit (e.g. by the train of mobs that's following you.)

The safest way to approach a boss fight, imo, is to first put down your summon sign to help others fight the boss. There is no penalty for dying while helping someone else, and you get to learn the mechanics before you try to fight the boss yourself. You can also summon others to help you with the boss fight if you need it.

I think this is the same in Bloodborne, but not much is known about the online capabilities right now. I'd imagine it's very similar.

There are no summon signs. The summoning player rings a bell to summon. Players who want to be summoned ring a bell which indicates they are available to be summoned. Players are summoned to a random location within the summoning player's area, rather than directly next to them. Also, when a player summon's assistance, they open themselves to being invaded. Invaders enter their world in a random location as well.

Basically, it's no longer as simple as standing outside of a fog gate and summoning a partner or two for a boss fight.

Turn down the blood in Bloodborne? I don't think there's been any mention, but it isn't particularly gory. It's pretty stylized. I think there was an option in Demon's Souls so maybe.

Check out that Mortal Kombat X gif if you want to see gore, haha.
LOL. I cringe every time I force myself to watch them.

I'm in the same camp as the Kotaku UK reviewer....

I’m not usually a fan of gore, or of horror, which made me nervous about Bloodborne - I’m still not convinced that I’ll be able to get through it mentally unscathed. This isn’t dark fantasy any more. It’s more gruesome than that. But it’s not gross-out - there’s no viscera gushing from wounds, no gore-porn, nothing that made my nose wrinkle in disgust.

My translation is: The blood is jarring at first (for those that don't like that style) but you get used to it.

Still hoping you can tone some of it down though.

You could easily see where flakes of crystal shards were dropping along the walkways though.

Having just played through that this past weekend, I'd say that isn't necessarily true. You can easily tell where the path is through the flakes, but that's if the game is actually having the flakes fall where you need them to. I remember waiting almost 5 minutes just for 3 flakes to show me the next few steps. Took 10-15 to navigate that particular path in that instance.

It isn't that bad at all (better than navigating Sen's Fortress lol), but that coupled with dealing with the Crystal Golems can make it a bit frustrating. And there's really only one path that doesn't go straight (one I mentioned taking a while to navigate) and that's just for a Soul of a Brave Warrior or something like that, not a path that leads forward.

The phrase you're looking for is "blood and guts."

Definition of GORE

1
: blood; especially : clotted blood
2
: gruesomeness depicted in vivid detail

Also you can't run and collect your souls anymore.

A nearby enemy will eat them so you will need to kill it to get your souls back

I don't think that happens 100% of the time though. It definitely doesn't happen with bosses, and in one of the streams the player had to collect their bloodstain outside of a boss arena. Maybe certain criteria need to be fulfilled for an enemy to absorb your blood?

Probably depends on what kills you and if that spot is one that is normally frequented by enemies.

Idk, that invisible walkway crystal bullshit was bullshit. I didn't need a guide for anything else. Side quests are also ambiguous as hell as well, like just talking to Onion bro being the way to continue his questline.

I never had any trouble with Crystal Cave, but the message was added after a patch, right? That made it much more obvious.

What i am the most happy about is that BB is surrounded by so much hype that even in different thred people are talking about it , grouping , counting down the days. Amazing.

I mean, Dark souls and Demon souls were probably two of my favorite games of last gen, even if I did play Demon Souls a long time after launch. I was there day one for Dark souls.

A new Miyazaki game, exclusive on ps4 with next gen graphics... GOTY material for sure.

Never played a Souls game, but all my best online buddies are pros of the series.

I'm so extremely excited for this game. Debating whether I should spend the next weak going through at least DeS and DkS.

But I feel like the experience might be heightened if I go in with no Souls knowledge.

You'll never finish DeS in a week let alone DkS.

Just go in blind at this point. If you love it then circle back later to the previous games, they still hold up very well

Your first experience will almost always be your most memorable.

More impressions:

Part 1

After my last post I tried going back to bed, but you know it’s just a Souls thing where you are never satisfied until you learn more about the enemy that is an impossible wall for you. I couldn’t sleep, and focus on other work as a boss hasn’t upset me since the royal rat authority or kicked my ass since Knight Artorias.

So I went back to do a run where in the second phase of the fight (where magic is involved), I just circled the boss while taking all the things you guys have mentioned into consideration. I circled him to better understand when my window of attack is, and at what range he does different things. I’d say I found some interesting things.

But before I delve into that, I wanted to address some things that has been said about me in Gamefaqs and neogaf forums about my earlier posts. A couple people on this forum have sent me PMs to give me an update on the other forums.

Apparently I’m a whiny baby and a b*** according to people that don’t know me, my style of play, and have never seen me play. Big assumptions coming from people that can post anything on the internet. I will only say one thing to counteract to this. Until you have played this game and beaten this boss, you don’t have the F ing right to call me anything or make assumptions about me. The only people that have the right to say anything are the two people that mentioned on reddit that they have beaten the game. No more comments.

Moving onto a more cheery subject: answering questions!

1) The blue meteors track you throughout the whole arena. And this is a gigantic arena. So vast. And the farther you are from the boss, the more he spams this particular move. And when they do come the only indication you have is a small blue glow on the ground a split second before the meteors hit you, because it is a reflection on the water you are standing on. Yes the arena is filled with water, but you do not slow down which is awesome.

2) And no this is my only path right now. I’ve exhausted all other areas. Explored every inch of the game, and this is the boss I have to beat to progress. Can’t do anything else. I am planning to level up my vitality to 25 and my endurance to 20. Which is another 10 levels. I have found a way to farm 11000 blood echoes in 5-6 mins, so I can get there quite quickly, like an hr maybe.

3) My playtime is now 28 hrs. 6 hrs just on this boss alone, which is fine by me. It took me 16 hrs to beat Smough and Ornstein my first time because dark souls was my first foray into this genre of gaming, and I'll admit it, I was terrible. Also I had no internet at that time, and so I could never play coop. I always do the first playthroughs of the souls game blind and alone.

4) I mentioned that I played the chalice dungeon in an earlier post, but never finished it because I ran out of blood vials to go any further. The 2 level boss of the first chalice dungeon is a gank squad of three watchers. One has a shotgun, which he spams the entire time, one had a flamethrower and maul, and the other had a huge club that rushed you. Used all my vials

5) The music is really atmospheric. Sometimes just plain creepy, and sometimes soothing. Boss battles are amazing because of the music that complements the actions and tense situation. I will buy the soundtrack when I get a chance. Just too good.

6) To me the tower of Latria was just a really atmospheric and dark place which gave you so much thrill and tension, and this game delivers that in many areas, but you won’t find yourself falling off huge towers by accident like in latria. There are definitely places where I was just scared to see what could potentially be making those noises, especially the woods. Such unique and creepy atmosphere there along with where I am atm

7) Cannot fire the cannon without 10 bullets minimum. I have levelled my cannon to +5 and does monstrous damage, but still requires 10 bullets to use. I have tried using bloodgems on it but there is no option to put bloodgems on the cannon. I guess it’ll probably break the game if you leveled your bloodtinge lol. Also no bloodgem I have found can reduce bullet use, but only increase blood attack

8) So I finally figured out how to use blood bullets. Derp... you press up on your d-pad. Lol I’m such an idiot. Never knew that. I through it was cycle through your consumable quick mapped inventory. So when you press up on your d-pad you get 5 blood bullet and no more. So it does not help the cannon, because you can only refill blood bullet if the blood bullet value is lower than 5. So for now 2 cannon shots for me. And unlimited use of my arcane imbuing item, because I can just refill my health with vials

9) I will post pics later when I get home

10) Stake driver is an interesting weapon because it has insanely high critical hit damage potential. But it does leave you vulnerable to attacks when charging. I haven’t used it much because I was gonna practice later with it. Story and exploration first. Such a vast and interesting world to explore. It has a very unique moveset as well

Part 2
So more onto the boss. I’ve tried the Cannon on the boss at point blank range and it does 608 damage on him which is around 20% of his life bar. The one thing inconsistent with this is that sometimes he flinches and sometimes he doesn’t. I really don’t understand the poise mechanic in this game. Hopefully people better than me can figure it out and post it.

I’ve tried two different strategies which I’m going to list

1) I took it really slow, where I would kill the minions and then hit the boss with my greatsword with arcane on it. This would generally get him to 60% health. Then in the next phase I would try to kill the minions again before going for the boss. Problem here is to keep an eye on the boss while trying to flank the minions which is super hard, because the minions can flank you as well. And they stay really close to the boss, so the boss will either do the AOE explosion or bring spikes out of the ground that fly into the sky. Didn’t really work out. This method of killing all the minions and hitting the boss is really tedious, time consuming, and it’s just a war of attrition and you always get randomly hit off screen and can be one shot by the forehead armor smash by the minions.

2) The first phase is exactly the same, but then the next phase is to rush the boss regardless on the minions. What I would do is I would do a running R2 with my greatsword which would do a smash that would do 200 damage. The problem is that he could interrupt your run by doing the AOE or the spikes. Also staying close to him doesn’t guarantee that he won’t do the meteor shower, just that he does it way less when you are really close to him for him to do the AOE. So I tried baiting the AOE and then running in for the smash. The problem with this method is that if I don’t kill minions they hit you off camera after you have smashed the boss. And they one shot me. Plus I wouldn’t have enough endurance to dash out of the way after the attack.

OK. I thought that I really hit a big insurmountable wall when something weird happened in one of my runs. During my first phase, when his health was around 60-70, he started his teleporting animation. At this point I just wanted to get as many hits. So I kept spamming my sword on him. And to my surprise he got stunned out of his animation of teleporting. I had a chance to hit him at least 4-5 more times before he was doing his teleporting animation. I tried to do more slashes but I ran out of stamina to do more hits. Now this is really interesting because the extra 4-5 slashes did a total of 450 damage which is awesome, but I didn’t have enough stamina to stun him again before he started his 2nd phase.

So Idk what to say really. I was going through some of my items and one of them is bone marrow ash, which increase your gun damage and staggering power. So the only idea I have left to try is to increase my vitality a little, and my endurance so I can do more attacks. Then during the battle use the bone marrow ash to increase the power of the cannon. That way when he starts to teleport I can shoot the cannon and maybe do some sick damage while stunning him for sure this time??? Maybe. Plus if it does stun him for sure with the use of the bone marrow ash powered up cannon, I can stun him twice when he tries to teleport. Idk, I guess I’ll have to try it.

I’m not mad anymore. I’ve calmed down. Collected my thoughts and started thinking about strategies to try to beat the boss, which is what this game is. Learning from all your past experiences.

Sorry for raging in the previous post guys, but it was just a boss with many annoyances that make the fight more tedious. To me I like fights that are intense and are fun at the same time. Not tedious, and fighting endless minions to get to a boss. Lots of people say Duke’s Dear Freja was an unfair boss in DS 2, but just think for a minute. You can damage the spiders in that fight from any angle making it not tedious. Also the Freja’s ghostbuster laser beam is one shot that can be dodged, and doesn’t track you. So you have a chance to dodge it. And unlike the Freja fight where the spiders actively come to hit you, the minions in this boss fight stay very close to boss, protecting it 360 degrees. On top of adding one shot forehead smashes and the fact you can't do frontal attacks and only flanking attacks.... As you can see it’s just so many layers and nuances that are created to troll the player.

One last thing which I thought was funny was that some people mentioned that this boss is probably designed for coop, and I think it is because of the nature of trying to flank all the enemies. But the reason I believe that it is coop, is because when I killed some minions, there is a chance that they drop Madman’s Knowledge which is the item to increase your insight stat, which is used to do coop. So I thought it was way of the game trolling me. Telling me to do coop lol.

All right. I’ll try this method and let you guys know

Off topic: heading out to see if I can salvage my situation with my fiancee. Wish me luck Bloodborners.

I'll post the non-spoiler information.

Part 1:
- Majority is boss information/weapons/zones that I have excluded
- Playtime currently at 28 hours, 6 hours on one boss.
- Music is very atmospheric, and well done.
- The dark atmosphere in general is also very well done

Part 2:
- Almost all boss information

I'm erring on the side of caution here, so I excluded things that could be borderline.

Okay, thanks guys :). Guess I'll be buying it then.

The Souls community is very into playing Souls games in a 'pure' manner - that is, no walktroughs or summoning. Because of the fixation on this play style, they tend to overstate how easy the games are without using any type of guide. The games can be beaten without outside help for sure, but they are obtuse at times. I'd say the majority of the difficulty of these games is from the obtuseness, not the enemies. You stated in your original post that you're not interested in a type of game that will require a guide, and if that's the case then this game might not be for you. If Souls games aren't an example games hat send players running to GameFaqs then I don't know what is.

thanks again

Thanks! Better to be cautious. 6 hours on one boss. Damn.

I'm also glad that the music holds up throughout the game. The snippets sounded fantastic.

Yeah, it really seems like he's loving it. Part of the post addressed the rude comments he's received from neogaf/reddit/gamefaqs etc., other than that it is positive.

The majority of this post was about the boss he is stuck on.

I guess this part won't be a spoiler:

What is this, a Final Fantasy boss? Sounds like a ridiculously difficult boss. Can't wait. :D

you ever played dark souls ? :)
ornstein and smough from dark souls took me at least that long
I wasnt connected to the internet so no coop

it's not frustrating tho, each time I died I learned more and it was never a cheap death !

Yeah, and Demon's and Dark Souls 2. I've never been stuck on a boss anywhere close to that long. I think O&S took two hours, possibly three,

That said, I didn't even touch stuff like Ancient Dragon because it felt like total bullshit.

Lol I killed O&S in like 3 or 4 tries I think. How much easier did I make Dark Souls by finding the Gravlord Sword? I'm thinking it would have been a fair bit harder being stuck with a shittier weapon like I was for the beginning of the game. Not sure how fun that would have been but I was slightly disappointed not dying much or at all on bosses towards the end

Oh boy - I'm on the cusp of breaking street date for this in Vancouver.

PM me if you want to know where. I want to leave as little a paper trail as possible if they do sell it to me early.
