Mario Party 10 |OT| - "We're just having four much fun!"

How fun would this be with only two people playing? Is the CPU cheap/infuriating? I remember my last Mario Party experience being frustrating, though I don't remember which game it was.

In general, the CPU's in a typical Mario Party game can rubber-band back between being either incredibly inept to being down right cheap at times. In Mario Party 3, for instance, Donkey Kong's CPU level was set to easy, but he was able to (somehow?) kick my friends asses.

As for answering your question, it's always better to have a group of four (now five, with the Bowser Party mode) friends whenever it comes to Mario Party. But the CPU characters should work fine for you & your pal.

This sounds hilarious with friends, having a few people over tonight and looking forward to making my buddies lose all their stars. I got the game for 50 bucks with the Mario Amiibo though, 40USD seems like it'll be the right price for this.
Make sure you prepare/provide plenty of snacks and alcohol. Apparently, Mario Party+Booze=Fun Barfy Times With Friends!

Playing first board with alcohol. Having fun so far!
This man knows what's up!

Sounds great, thanks! Nice OT, it's definitely selling me on it.

Played all three of the main modes and I enjoyed them all.

This may be one of my favorite Mario Party's already.

Mine too, the mini-games are pretty good.
Agreed on both ends. Mario Party 3 & 9 both have my favourite collection of minigames, and this installment definitely has earned it's spot on my favourite minigames list.

No problem, man. I'm glad that I was able to provide everyone enough information about the game, and how it clicks. I was lucky that a friend had got a copy of the Japanese release in late February, so we have been playing it with a bunch of friends, including several "Mario Party Down" sessions. Except for me, as I don't drink alcohol.

And, in general, I'm glad that no one has given me flack about my new avatar. Captain Toad was wearing me out, and I don't want to remind of myself with the sorry state of the Mega Man series, so a plump Yoko Littner that's wearing a belly dancing outfit should do the trick.

Wait... This game still requires 4 Wii Remotes for play? Can't use Pro Controllers?

I just bought the bundle and looked on the back. I hate Wii Remotes because I only use them every few months, if that, and the batteries always go from full to dead every time. Ugh!

Amiibo Party has pretty much cost me $150 but it is a LOT of fun.

Customizing the boards and collecting badges is going to be a blast.

I really hope that they release those amiibo "cards" soon (assuming that wasn't just a rumor). I don't want to buy the figurines.

Well, this is due to the selection of games that use motion controls. Thankfully, unlike in MP8, the team that had developed this series had perfected them by the time MP9 was released.

As for the battery problem, it's best that you store your box of non-HiMH batteries in a cool, dry, non-refrigerated location. If you have NiMH batteries, then store that shit in the refrigerator, as storing those type of batteries can slow their self-discharge rate dramatically.

I keep reading that with only one Amiibo you can unlock pieces of the other boards by collecting tokens. Some clarification please.

1. When you are unlock these new pieces are they permanent? Next time you start up with a different Amiibo can you switch a quarter of the board without spending a token.

2. Can you replace the entire board of your Amiibo? Let's say I use a Mario Amiibo to use the Mario board can I then swap out all four quarters for four quarters of the Donkey Kong board?

3. Can you get permanent access to all other character boards this way as long as you have a single Amiibo?

Would be great if there was Pro Controller that they just cut out the games using motion control from the possibilities.

Even worse was Nintendo Land as the versus games didn't need motion yet only the Wii Remote was supported.

My copy got in today and I tried out Bowser mode solo just to see how it plays and person and I don't get the complaint that it's impossible to lose as Bowser unless you playing against pros. Even on Normal the CPU's are decent at avoiding the shit in the minigames.

How does Mario Party 10 compare to 9? It seems like MP 10 is worse in some cases from the impressions so far? And if that's true, I may just spring for MP9 instead.

*my only experience with MP has been MP8

Definitely buy MP9 before you buy this one IMHO. MP9 has the best minigames collection out of any MP to date. The car/linear boards is certainly different from past installations, but I believe that between MP9 and MP10, MP9 handled it better. There's actually a reason to be a captain in that game. (You get to choose minigames that you're better at, you get to handle events throughout the board, etc.).

MP10 is still fun. I've only gotten a chance to play it for about 3 hours last night. My initial impressions are that it's not quite as great as MP9 was, but it's still enjoyable. Bowser Party mode is just a bit disappointing in execution. Seemed seriously rushed. Those minigames in particular aren't very polished. There's one that requires you to blow into the mic, and it's difficult to score points as Bowser AND it exhausts me lol. I feel light headed after it.

The air-ship level was frustrating in MP10. Every turn you have to wait for the ships to move. Halfway through you are placed on a railway that nearly guarantees you lose more than half your stars. Eh.

Anyway, MP9 first, but don't ignore MP10 in the long run. It has promise. The minigames are better than I initially thought. The boss battles aren't as great as MP9's though, although they do last longer most definitely. Also Bowser Jr. minigames are all but absent... There's just 2 you can play in a separate mode, and they are EXTREMELY lackluster lol.

Just got home, I'm packing, and I am exhausted. That being said...

Once I get my copy, I'll go and check to see that, as this is something that had never come up when my friend and I were playing his copy.

Yep, I would also recommend starting with Mario Party 9 first, as while MP10 isn't a bad game, there are a lot of features that are not present. The minigames are rock solid, and the game is quite a looker.

Does the game require Wiimote Plus? I have three Wiimotes but only one is a plus and one of the others sports the adapter.

There is no need for a Wii Remote with Wii Motion Plus. Normal Wiimotes will work perfectly fine.

Picking this up later tonight. Do I really need the Amiibo version, or will the vanilla version give me the standard MP experience?

This is just beautiful, man. I only have ordered the bundle and Luigi, but I'm definitely going to get the Peach & Toad Amiibo on a later date.

Also, good choice of music. I have most of the songs from New Retro Wave on a playlist, with this song being my favourite.

That depends. If you are a fan of the style of partying that Mario Party 9 had offered, then you're good to go. If you want to access the Amiibo Party Mode, as long as you have a Mario-themed Amiibo (either from the Smash or Super Mario Bros. line), then you will be fine.

There's only one version of the game, but the 'amiibo mode' unlocks by scanning a figure onto the gamepad. That said, you can't play the 'classic' mario game board without owning at least 1 amiibo.

I got my Mario Party 10 bundle from my local game shop, along with Bowser, Toad, and Yoshi SMB amiibo being delivered today.

I got the main theme stuck in my head...

Luckily you only need to scan it once for future playthroughs. The mode is permanent after the first scan.
Also a heads up Bowser in Amiibo mode is OP. You are bound to win if you use him since Bowser Space is good and all mini-games are Bowser games.

I'm sorry to tell you but I just found out that you need to scan an amiibo to play amiibo party when you start up the game again. One player is required to play as an amiibo as well.

Awesome weekend ahead for you! Enjoy! :D

Nintendo, this is how you should release your retail games from now on so you can sell big. With LE bundles, and amiibo figures.

omg what if they do something similar with Splatoon? Wich I'm 98% sure they will. Nothing can stop the amiibo hype train!

This helps a lot, thanks. Might just pick up MP9 in that case. Feel free to post extended impressions once you get more time with the game. I'm surprised that after having done the overhaul with the car system, they didn't manage to polish and improve it from their first try.

Just got this, how do you unlock Spike and Bowser Jr.?

For Spike & Toadette, you have to earn enough party points and spend them at Toad's shop to unlock them both. It honestly doesn't take too long, and you can earn enough coins after a couple of rounds. However, to the best of my knowledge, Bowser Jr. isn't an unlockable character in this game.

By the way, guess what had arrived at my door step just now? :D

Surprised at how beautiful the game is from some impression videos. Mario Party was never a 'pretty' game for me but I love this style.

I think I'll wait until a friend buys the game to see if I'll buy it too, though, but I like most of what I see. Loved MP9.

I went to best buy today to help a friend buy BF Hardline with gamer's club unlocked. Checked the ad and saw MP10 came out today and the special Mario bundle so thought I might as well try, and asked customer service if they had any unreserved copies. They did. So now I have MP10 with amiibo.

now what. worth playing? worth selling on ebay? that picture in the OP with reviews is discouraging

I'm glad everyone is drunk and enjoying the game but can someone please clarify how amiibos work?

Using an amiibo unlocks Amiibo Party, which is a board game version of Mario Party. Every character is a model of the amiibo (if you scan your amiibo) or a game piece if you don't have an amiibo for that character.

You each take turns (not in a car) to get enough coins to get stars. After every character has taken their turn, you all play a minigame. After 10 rounds, the winner will be decided.

Unfortunately, to do anything during your turn, you have to tap your amiibo on the NFC reader every time you hit the block, get an item, etc. It might be frustrating to do it if you have friends who also use amiibos.

Basically, only useful part of amiibo is unlocking amiibo party, and being scanned for daily rewards to customize your amiibo for amiibo party, that's all.

I don't understand how Mario Party games are so hard to make good.

I really wish they made a Mario Party game that had the best mini games from each iteration. Bumper Balls and Book Squirm are some of my favorite. Seems like the series peaked on the Gamecube.

So far, my "expectations" have been met. The new mini-games are really good, but the board game is hilariously luck based, boring, and not fun. It's amazing how they can nail one aspect of the game and completely fuck up the other.

Amiibos in MP10 make horse armor sound like an expansion pack, you can't even scan your friends amiibos to unlock a board, and even if you got all amiibos to have access to all content the game has at all times, you still have to scan amiibos every turn, wth Nintendo? It's like going to the market and clicking on purchase every time I want to use a dlc weapon, except this is 10 times worse than that.

This could of been one of the best mario parties and I had a lot of fun playing Bowser party, but the lack of content and the amiibo party fiasco make me want to hate it.

Just played a couple with a group of four.

It's pretty fun, mini-games are good so far. Still not a fan of the car. I wish the classic board game layout wasn't locked behind Amiibos.

Really disappointed right now. Didn't realize each player needed a wiimote. Figured one could use the game pad. There are two of us and only one wiimote. Really don't want to buy another.

Play Bowser Party. Bowser uses the Gamepad, the other player uses a Wii Remote. Granted, I played by myself but don't remember asking for a Wii Remote in that mode against the CPU.

You only need to tap your amiibo if you want to use a saved token. Otherwise you can just press A on the gamepad to roll. It's possible to use every board and combine them all with just one amiibo but you need to collect the board tokens with that amiibo.
