I wonder is there an unwritten rule stating that every D&D Forgotten Realms game has to use the Sword Coast as the default setting
Growing up, it always felt like every FR game took place around the Moonsea. Now I guess the Sword Coast has replaced it. You'd think that with such a huge setting they would move around more.

Is there going to be any exclusive content for KS backers? I backed the game but don't think I'll have time to play it, especially with GTAV and TW3 coming out fairly soon. I may just sell my code and rebuy it when it's on sale, but I don't want to if there I'll be missing out on backer content

I watched a stream of character creation, and it looks like there are at least six or seven new portraits (including a couple of cowled male humans, some piratical-looking ocean folk, a female aumaua and a new male dwarf). They've also tidied up some of the older ones. Still a reasonably limited palette when you consider how many permutations of character there are, but I guess not everyone is as anal retentive as me about having the art style be consistent.

Can you create a fighter/mage character in this game? That was my favorite class in the BG games.

Yes, to some degree, but your mage spells wouldn't be very powerful. You'd have to skimp and lie somewhere in the middle. You might like the Cipher/Chanter class or a druid though.

You can't multiclass no. You can make a melee wizard if you want, though it might not be the most efficient character you could make. There's no armor or weapon restrictions in the game, other than heavy armor penalties to speed(applies to tanks also), so anyone can be a plate+2h sword character if you want them to be.

Does the Beta run on a Intel 4000 Graphics solution?

From Friday to after Easter I only have my Laptop with me, which is 'strong' enough to play things like Bioshock or Dota 2, but I never tried anything on the Unity Engine...

A cipher is probably your best bet, although most of their "spells" are single-target and they overwhelmingly focus on damaging or disrupting the enemy. They earn their "mana" resource for spellcasting by landing hits in the physical realm, so you can build them as frontline fighters, shock troops, or have them work just behind your tank(s).

You can also create a Wizard who is good at fighting, but your spellcasting will suffer.

Bought the guide and the strategy guide on Amazon , It's pretty cool they released a lore book on top of a strat guide.

3 more days !

To clear up some confusion: Cipher is in no fashion a melee hybrid. They're squishy as a wizard with less defensive tools. The best way to examine that class is as a damage/control archetype whose power level is dynamic within each fight (needing to build resources) but relatively static from encounter to encounter (no vancian magic). Lower versatility potential due to power selection at level ups.

Wizards that hybridized don't ever ' lose ' spellcasting efficacy. You have the opportunity cost of element specific damage oriented talents and a couple memorized spells per day but you aren't giving up spell pen, spell accuracy choices so your results will be the same. Wearing armor does make you slower though but that's not an option restricted for melee alone.

Depends how you define efficency. If you want to survive in a melee role you're going to have some points defensive stats which you'll need to take out of other areas (ie reducing AoE effects and duration).

I asked in the other thread already, I am wondering when the bakers will get their keys.

The press getting copies early is fine, seeing Let's Players served before me rubs me the wrong way.

Efficacy, not efficiency. The spells will have their listed effects if you make your combat rolls, even if the damage/duration/area is less than a specialist . Of course spending attributes on defensive stats just to go into melee as a wizard is already being inefficient so anyone building that has already given up on min-maxing in favor of a thematic archetype. Also something to be said that if you are going to get the most out of the wizard defensive/buff spells as a character goal INT becomes a defensive scalar in its own right.

Thanks for all the responses! I think I'll roll wizard until I have a better grasp of the mechanics.

I would check out the Chanter, they have fairy good defenses bit a mix between Bard and Mage. You chant strings of epic poems that cause various effects, like increased speed or defenses, and that builds up power you can then use to cast spells, called Invocations, these range from actual attack spells like lightening to summoning skeletons or wraiths to fight for you.

LPers, despite some of them insisting otherwise, are often basically press at this point as far as publishers seem to be concerned.

A dev said that they were looking to send out Keys, and backer rewards, possibly today or tomorrow. That was a few days ago and I don't think we've gotten any followup since then with a firmer timeline.

Sadly, I think we're at the point that they'll probably sell more copies via exposure by LPers than they will reviews/coverage by the press.

I think it'll be today, but Obsidian are West Coast based so it could be a while.

Question, is this set in D&D World?

Nope. As stated above, licensing D&D tends to be expensive and complicated. One of the main reasons Obisdian did this as Kickstarter was because they wanted to develop their own world and game systems/mechanics to go along with it. It's heavily inspired to 2ED AD&D and Forgotten Realms though.

It's also worth mentioning all their incantations or shouts tend to be melee range, as a cone AoE from the caster.

Currently debating between Cipher or Wizard. I think Cipher seems pretty interesting and closer D&D sorcerers, my favorite class.

Cipher is much more about crippling specific enemies and has some hillariously powerful debuffs. It doesn't have any problems will resting either since they rely on focus. It's nice to have both though.

Some of the big time twitch streamers are playing this, I think this is the kind of exposure that Obsidian/Paradox wanted (Just like Cities Skyline)

If this sells anything like Skylines I'll be insanely happy, it'll fund like several BG2-esque sequels.

Seriously. I want them to do whatever they need to do to make this game sell like hotcakes to ensure the creation of future, larger and more ambitious sequels and other cRPG franchises.

If that means reviewers and LP people get it a few days ahead of me I'm perfectly OK with that.

There is a Kickstarter only pet, item, and achievement.

This will sell - if the quality is there, but I don't think it will sell as fast as Skylines.

You could stream Skylines and have a city grow in the span of half an hour. Stream this game for half an hour and you won't see any significant growth... It's a tougher sell to market this with streamers.
But the word of mouth will be there if the gameplay and the story are rewarding. It will take a while to build up though, since the game is rather long and more expensive than Skylines.

Yeah, I think that's very likely.
Skylines has an immediate and easily understood appeal which can be transported in a few minutes. PoE probably only appeals immediately to CRPG veterans.

Right? I've never seen a game take place anywhere else on Faerun.

Still that game doesn't look bad, I'll definitely give it a shot as well.

For sure. I don't think it will do Skyline numbers, that would certainly be awesome, but it could and should do quite well regardless. I said this a while but even Divinity OS numbers might be tough because, similarly to CS, that game was very stream and Youtube friendly. The literally explosive nature of the combat system they had and the coop aspect of the game made it very buzz worthy. You had fantastic Gifs and clips all over that were really exciting. PoE just doesn't have that same basic appeal, so it will take a bit more to really get a fire going.

Then again Wasteland 2 also sold extremely well and while I loved that game it's not a looker at all and it is a far more old school and esoteric game than PoE is. So if the Streamers and Reviewers all come out as resoundingly positive and then early players also come out with a lot of positive buzz I don't see the game having an issue with sales. I think it's more a matter of where along the 500k to 1 million range the game falls.

Any idea how big the download will be?

I read a dev say a while ago something like ~7gb installer and around ~13gb installed. I think the steam page says 14gb right now.

Here is my incredibly verbose guide to the Pillars of Eternity Character Creation. It contains pretty much everything you would want to know about making a character for Pillars of Eternity with an interest in mechanics (although I also touch on what exactly is reacted to in the game for RP purposes).

The guide is fully chaptered. The guide is for everyone from completely new players to RPGs to Infinity Engine veterans who may not have the beta. There are many beta backers here that have already played the game, but there might be some information in there worth listening to.

This will be part one of a three part guide. The second part will focus on basic controls, options menu, mechanics and combat. The third will showcase a few encounters with each of the classes and showcase how to play them.

This guide will also be spoiler free if you have already seen the E3 Press Demo from 2014.

I hope you like it, and I hope it helps ease you into the game.

Part 2 and 3 will be available over the next few days.

Mask of the Betrayer takes place in the east, which is one of the better parts of the Forgotten Realms setting.
