Pillars of Eternity Beta - Torment: Tides of the Beetles

Is it wrong that I kind of winced for Obsidian when Bioware announced the Dragon Age DLC is coming out this week?

Bad enough Bloodborne was coming out 2 days before PoE hits.

Here is my incredibly verbose guide to the Pillars of Eternity Character Creation. It contains pretty much everything you would want to know about making a character for Pillars of Eternity with an interest in mechanics (although I also touch on what exactly is reacted to in the game for RP purposes).

The guide is fully chaptered. The guide is for everyone from completely new players to RPGs to Infinity Engine veterans who may not have the beta. There are many beta backers here that have already played the game, but there might be some information in there worth listening to.

This will be part one of a three part guide. The second part will focus on basic controls, options menu, mechanics and combat. The third will showcase a few encounters with each of the classes and showcase how to play them.

This guide will also be spoiler free if you have already seen the E3 Press Demo from 2014.

I hope you like it, and I hope it helps ease you into the game.

Part 2 and 3 will be available over the next few days.

Reposting this important video for others to see.

They only announced that the trailer for the Dragon Age DLC is coming out this week.

At least the latter is only for a single console.

Still hoping for D:OS numbers.

I know it's not rational, and I don't regret backing it whatsoever, but the fact that I donated more than 300 bucks to the KS and everybody else seems to be playing this already makes me feel some kind of way. Suddenly, I'm 10 years old again wondering why some kids get Jordan's and I got third year Horace Grant's velcro editions.

Nah, you're getting special autographed Jordan's. Everybody else is running around with the plebeian versions. Good things come to those that wait.

It would have been neat if you could build your character in the backer beta and export it to the final game directly. Would cut at least that hour off of the main play time ;)

I live for that first hour! Besides, aren't we supposed to go for maximum play time on these games? ;)

This game will sell better than D:OS, I think. It has more widespread initial hype, it's coming from a recognized studio and it's going to have long legs and great word of mouth (assuming it's as great as we all hope).

It's coming for XBox One and PC tomorrow. It's the PC part that makes me wince.
Every PC gamer who gets DAI DLC rather than Pillars of Eternity deserves the future they are complicit in creating.

Anyway, I'll just continue to live in my comfortable reality bubble where that is an option chosen by only 3 people. Globally.

So I've narrowed my starting PC down to these three:

1. A dissident female rogue who has fled from Old Vailia in disgrace, but retains her wit, poise and skill with a rapier.
2. A cipher/detective Orlan who's basically a pintsized Sherlock Holmes asshole genius.
3. A female death Godlike kept safe in her by her aristocratic parents, who spent most of her childhood brushing up on phrases and invocations about death and destruction in her townhouse attic.

Already rejected the philosopher monk from the Ixamitl Plains, the pale elf wizard mystic who only uses spells involving fire or ice, and the female dwarf Goldpact Knight who's out to make a buck.

I'm going to end up spending all of Thursday night after work on the character creation screen and no time in the actual game.

When are backers going to get their keys so that they can start the preload (steam users atleast)? With my 'net connection it's going to take quite a while for the entire thing to download.

There's a gif of an adorable Hispanic girl that goes here.

I fear I must disagree. Much of D:OS popularity came from the fact that the game was easily presentable as cool: Slash a bad guy, blood spurts out. Cast fireball at bloodpool to light bad guy on fire and evaporate blood pool. Cast lightning bolt at blood cloud to electrocute enemies. Summon giant spiderbros and elementals.

I don't think Pillars can be broken down into such 'cool' chunks to get people hooked. What it does however have, is Obsidian's pedigree. I hope that is enough, as I'd love to see them do more of their own thing without a publisher mucking about in their work. I think Paradox has been quite good for them however.

Edit P.S. : Pillars is number 5 on Steam and number 1 on GOG.

I'd really like to use a class that isn't represented by a companion but I'm aggressively disinterested in those classes for an initial playthrough. I may just go with a wizard and leave the NPC at home because
fuck elves
.

We should get our keys tomorrow IIRC.

(Same here, both the aggressively disinterested part and the class choice)

Go Rogue. Name her Serah Pellin. She can see Aedyr from her house.

Two.

Two.

TWO.

Then post a serialised account of their adventures.

LOL, n°2 sounds incredible and has hilarious potential.

I really wish I could roll some of the interesting characters you guys are throwing out there. In every RPG I play I always go with a good two shoes lame version of myself. Human male Wizard. Boring I know :/

Yeah that's boring, but I know a way to spice it up.

Roleplay has Harry Potter.

You discover some ancient mirror and you walk through it and you end up in Eora. People laugh that you have a lightning scar on your head. You try to prove them wrong.

Queue intro scene.

You're a wizard Harry!

Pale-Elf Chanter, or Human/Godlike Paladin.
Paladins look like they can double up pretty ok, I could be Paladin buddies with Pallegina

When will they send out Steam codes to their Kickstarter backers? I want to add this to my library... and then keep watching it while I play Bloodborne :D
