Pillars of Eternity Beta - Torment: Tides of the Beetles

What type of character are you interested in playing for your main character?

A character that plays different and that is also a versatile, mysterious and sociable type, that's the kind of guy I love to roleplay (well, without being an exaggerated Mary Sue like Kvothe).

I always do mages/wizards on IE games, so I wanted to try something different.

Thank you all! I guess I won't care that much for companions then if there's enough versatility on each class. Still, that chanter opened a new option for me. I'm going to inform better on the cipher and chanter classes then ^^

I've kept myself in the dark about the companions so that I'm the dark about who I can and can't recruit. Paid off dividends back when DA:O was released. It was so much fun to recruit mystery party members!

I've heard people talk about how they aren't that great as ranged characters and operate better as melee, but not much more.

Yeah, I think I saw that somewhere too. Which is crazy, because they seem to be built around ranged combat. Maybe it's something that will be fixed down the line. I'll probably go for a rogue instead. They seem to be alright. Or maybe a Cipher.

i'm not sure I'll back anything else Obsidian does based on the way they've handled sending out these keys.

Honestly?

Just completed the second dungeon in the backers beta, wow, what a reward.
It asks you questions about your character, you get an item to infuse, you present yourself and the deity rips you a part to infuse a soul stone with your characters core being which can be then infused in the weapon. Your weapon literally becomes the embodiment of the type of person you are. SO GOOD.
Item spoiler

Rangers abilities are a bit one dimensional, but they're not bad at all, they are very competent single target ranged DPS. (I've never really followed why you'd use them in melee.) The animal companion has to be used carefully, it doesn't work well as a meatshield.

I think for Flanking with your companion since they have bonuses and skills that promote attacking the same target.

Going almost blind into this game, fuck yes, but I gotta know... which classes are represented by our companions (the ones with developed stories)?

I was thinking of going Paladin or Monk but I gotta know this...

Also, a bunch of stuff just came up to do on the 26th, I want to punch someone.

Totally forgot about this game. Only backed out during the kickstarter campaign, but never heard anything after that. How do i go about claiming my cd key?

Thanks!

Yeah same here. What are people getting mental about?

They want the game. Badly. Once it releases the frothing will subside and they will look back on themselves with embarrassment. Gorion would not be proud of their actions.

Isn't it like 10am or something in the US

I mean, the game isn't even out yet in two days, I'm not getting the outrage

Since Obsidian is located in California, it is like 8am. People mad about keys don't seem to understand that Obsidian employees are probably not at work yet or just starting their day.

the only things I'm "outraged" about is that my physical copy of the Guidebook will arrive in mid-april instead of... well, sooner.

That, and the fact that they could give us our digital goodies before handing out the keys, or something.

The key itself? I can wait a couple of days. I can. That's what I tell myself, but I can. I really can.

You'll need to sign up here https://eternity.obsidian.net/ and and link your Kickstarter pledge to your new account which should just require you putting in your email address you use with KS. They should be sending out Keys and Rewards sometime today. It's only 8:25 their time so it will probably be a while.

I guess, but you could just tank with someone else and do the same thing. Depending no party make up anyway.

Yeah but then you don't get the bonuses for attacking your animal companion's target.

Yeah this my issue on the digital rewards. Seems silly to hold on to them and link them with the Steam/GOG Keys.

I don't mind if keys don't go out early enough to preload the game, as I won't be able to play it until Thursday night anyway. But I can understand why others who may have, e.g., taken the day off work would want their key to show up by late Wednesday. That's still some time away, though. I'd only be a little irked if they hadn't even said anything to backers by then and meanwhile Steam and GOG customers already have the game installed.

Seriously, though. Digital lore book. All I ask.

Man I always stress over character gen in an RPG.

Seeing as how most of my companions (whenever I get them) cover all the bases I may for the first play through go in as a Moon Godlike Chanter. I like playing bard-like characters and yea their is a companion one but he'll just have to hang back at the inn or whatever NPCs do when I don't have them in my party.

Rangers are good now. You can build them frontline to fight w/ your companion. Make sure to target the same enemy. Or you can make him a ranged badass DPS'er. I think I'm going to spec Sagani into an interrupter Ranger.

I'm going into this game damn near completely blind. How awesome of a time will I have? =D

I went in to the backers beta blind. I've put 30 hours in to it. D:

They go to your
Stronghold
not the inn. ;)

Didn't they post on official forums estimate about keys being delivered most likely on Mon or Tue?

If you're talking about stalkers link that definitely works on ranged attacks.

I know, I was just saying that if you tank with someone else instead of your animal companion you wouldn't get that bonus from Stalkers Link along with the Flanking bonus, which is what some people have found is more effective with a Ranger than actually fighting at range.

Looking at the names of the Invocations for the Chanter I really want to change them to stuff like ""Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra" from Star Trek TNG.

"We're Really Digging Pillars of Eternity" by Kotaku

http://kotaku.com/were-really-digging-pillars-of-eternity-1693310820

A few of us have been playing Pillars of Eternity, the lovely new crowdfunded PC role-playing game that sets out to re-create the vibe of old Infinity Engine games like Baldur's Gate.

Safe to say we love it so far. I've got many more hours to play before I feel comfortable writing a full, thorough review for Pillars, which comes out Thursday, but Kirk and I took some time last night to have a broad chat about what we like and don't like about Obsidian's latest. You can read it all right here.

Damn, doesn't look like the GMG coupon works on Pillars of Eternity. Oh well, I'll make it one of those rare occasions that I pay full price for a game.

It doesn't work on PoE because it's in VIP deals already, at least I think that is why. 31.5€ for most basic PoE edition.

Let's ramble!

Metacritic reviews for PoE...i think 75-85 is logical to me.

Of course, as Wasteland 2 and New Vegas taught me...that's doesn't mean the game is going to be crap, far from it, it can be the best rpg in years even with those reviews.

Personally, I'm hoping for a solid 83+. Realistically, I'm about the same as you and thinking anywhere from 75-85. I just want this to sell well and have good legs. The folks at Obsidian deserve it.

The meta discussion about not even the quality of the game but rather how it will be reviewed by other people is pretty pointless and dumb. Especially when you seem to not even care about its metacritic rating.

I'm guessing somewhere above WL2 and below D:OS, so low 80s? Most reports are that the game isn't too buggy, and that's what I think could hurt scores the most. Maybe also that some people are finding it difficult but I guess that's more in vogue nowadays.

I'm quietly hopeful that we're going to be given one of those very few games that can be said to deliver an Actually Great Story. I'm quietly hopeful that the game will earn itself exceptionally long legs by virtue of becoming a staple recommendation whenever someone asks for a game with a strong narrative.
