Thanks for all the tips you guys gave me earlier. Game has finally clicked and I'm really enjoying it now. Got the parry down, made good progress, beat the first boss, things are lookin' up. The first couple hours sucked but I've warmed up to it massively.

I dont know if to ask it, or just find it myself, but i guess i should ask anyways:

1-how do you parry?

2-how do you backstab?

3-and where in the world you can level up?

I think i played for almost 4 hours or 5 hours, had to restart my character build, first time was getting destroyed by the Mob in central yhrman, now im using the ax, so far i made it to open up the door close to the second lantern.

This game is destroying my soul, as someone who mostly used shield in previous souls game, only using evade makes the game harder than any of the others souls games. Im loving the punishment.

Now is time to go to sleep....
Parry by shooting and enemy right before he hits you, no backstage as far as I know, level up by talking to the woman in Hunter's Dream after you've attepmted to fight a boss.

Same thing happened to me - he drops nothing of note, don't worry.

I just beat
Vicar
and it was the first boss fight I didn't do on my first try. Finally, looks like BB is starting to hit its stride. Third time was the charm. Great fight.

I'm level 36 now and sticking to the Axe even though I got the greatsword. Kinda wished I hadn't splashed out 20k echoes on the latter though. Such a waste. Even more so when I realise that I actually spent closer to 30k on it since I lost 10k that I was saving up due to a certain kidnapper. The sword just doesn't do as much damage as my upgraded axe and the move set seems too stamina dependent. Shame.

So I was fighting a guy and he fell off the roof...(spoiler)

It was the
Gatling Gun guy
he rolled off and died, and now his pick up is just floating in the air and i cant get it. Anyone know what it was or if I can reset the drop or anything?

You both need to leave the area and then return to his spawn point he drops a badge. It will be there waiting for you.

Send her to the clinic. I sent her to the Chapel by accident but they don't appreciate the crazies. And she's bat-shi*t. Clinic is best as they can heal her. No reward for sending her to the church.

Got it.
And the little girl looking for her parents? Send her to the same place?

Excited to get back from my work trip on Friday and get started on this game.

Couple of chalice dungeon questions, can they be done at any level?

Can you farm them or do you need a rare item to be able to enter them?

Sorry if these are stupid. I've tried to keep myself from looking at too much news/content prior to jumping into the game.

Dont run into the mob. Wait and watch their actions. Play like a hunter.

No backstabbing, only gunparry and then eviscerate, or strong attack in the back then eviscerate.

You unlock leveling up after seeing an inhuman monstrosity (boss) and gaining insight points. Insight seems like your mind opening to "impossible" things. It's why you see the doll being alive with 1+ Insight, and just sitting there with none.

You can level up by either fighting or dying to the first boss. You can also unlock leveling by finding a usable item that gives you a single insight will also unlock the doll.

Sorry to be the noob, but how do you upgrade weapons?

Bench inside house in hunters dream, it's in the right wall.

1- Shoot the gun at an enemy when they're attacking before they fully swing/do the attack. Then run up to them and tap R1. The trick is to get them before the attack starts. For bosses it's much harder because each hit is so much more devastating.

2- Do a charged attack on somebody's back (hold R2), and if you hear the parry noise from Souls game it means you did it succesfully, hit r1 on their back for massive damage.

3- You need to
attempt first boss
before a certain someone in hunter's dream becomes your level up NPC

Just coming up for air before I finish off old town...quick question!

What are the level restrictions on Co op play? Is it ten levels? 5? Im having the hardest time connecting with friends and according to everything we are doing stuff right except in like 12 levels ahead of all of them

Got home after work to put in some more time, and jesus
Father Gascoigne
is just wrecking my face.

I can handle him mostly ok when he's a Human, but
when he turns into a Beast at like 33% he just kicks my ass all over the place

Feel like I need to play more aggressive but I'm having trouble finding openings to make things happen.

Eviscerate?

Got it.
And the little girl looking for her parents? Send her to the same place?

If you have not already, do not give her mother's jewel. You can use it for a weapon upgrade and from my understanding there's no reward giving it to her, just a depressing moment.

while he's transforming start chucking molotov cocktails at him. You can throw enough to where it'll almost kill him and you'll only need to melee him one, maybe two times.

ww - fire fire fire or my spoiler

Any tips for the
Father Gascoigne
fight? Getting my ass handed to me, I could usually get him down to half health but damn I get wrecked right after.

Who's the guy that misses 6 molotov's thrown at the cleric while being locked on? This guy!

Had to take him down the old fashioned way, which helped me appreciate the use of aggressiveness.

Thank you everyone for the tips, Im mostly staying out of this thread to do the playtrough with almost no guide, i went dark with almost every gameplay video of this game before release, so far playing a "blind" playtrough, brings me back on when i first played Dark Souls.

Game changer for me. I was under the impression there was only X insight in the game, so this made me afraid to ever summon help.

1. There are items that can give you insight. I don't know how common they'll become later but probably not terribly/just enough.

2. Not only that but entering boss fight gives you 1, defeating an extra 3 (4 total per defeated boss).

3. Being summoned to help somebody, and defeating the boss, gives you insight.

But as of right now as far as I see insight is only useful in massive quantities to buy armor off defeated hunters. For 1-2 all you need to do is help somebody beat an enemy once or twice.

Very very rare temporary avatar change just for the game. lol

Man I wont be able to play for at least a few days since got other stuff to take care of. D:

Where is the best place to farm for Molotovs in the beginning of the game?

Molotovs are pretty rare, but keep doing runs on the alleyway to the large bonfire area with the group of villagers. The ones holding the torches sometimes drop them.

After you speak to the woman in the door asking if you found another place for her to live, there is an area you can get to if you break barrels. If you drop down slowly, theres another door that leads outside and theres a man out there with a beak mask on.

He's hard as fuck.

I've killed the first two bosses with the cane. If I'm being honest, I think it's the strongest of the starting three. It has a great range nd awesome creed control and in cane form it's fast as shit. You have to gun perry like a pro to be effective with it and it feels so great.

Had to quit for the night. Maybe I'm an idiot, but can you use the Music Box multiple times to keep stunning Father G? I have been using it once for a couple hits, then I get stomped.

Also remember that Beasts are weak to fire. I fought a werewolf who was merely being tickled by my cane in Old Yharnam. Then I accidentally poked him with the torch and it did a ton of damage.

Also remember that the extended version of your weapon deals greater damage to beasts, shorter does on humans at least with the cane.

fight? Getting my ass handed to me, I could usually get him down to half health but damn I get wrecked right after.

A fully charged R2 will stun him. And you can launch the attack even while you're being hit by a swing of his (which you'll regain most of with the regain system)

For
the last phase, this tactic can still work, but he is also very much more vulnerable and easier to parry with the pistol.

Well, I called it quits at
Father Gascoigne
. Was only the third attempt with him, so not too bad after bringing down both the first werewolf and the
Cleric Beast
on my first attempts quite easily.

The threaded cane I can't say I'm overly pleased with at +3. Not sure if I should switch focus one the
Saw Spear
that I picked up in the sewer area, or if I should just leave the cane where it's at and continue using it.

I'm about a level 19 I believe. Been putting everything into vitality and stamina, though likely I'll work on skill soon.

Other musings:

  • Charged backstabs and visceral attacks I pretty much had nailed down from the start. Parrying with the gun is still hit and miss.
  • I'm not quite sure how to handle
    Father Gascoigne's beast stage
. The stun lock attack is what's doing me in. There a favorable direction to be dodging? Left seems like a bad idea, but right doesn't seem good either. Edit: Guess I just gotta get the parrying down.
  • Sort of difficult to tell where dropped blood echoes are. Not really a problem and is likely done to make it harder for people to run through straight to their puddle.

Also remember that the extended version of your weapon deals greater damage to beasts, shorter does on humans at least with the cane.

Generally in the Souls games, the "2nd form" basically is the power moveset, which will always deal more damage though you sacrifice speed for it.

I have not encountered the mother yet. I've just gotten to the part where the time of day went down a notch.

The cane is absolutely amazing. I've been running a skill build with the cane and it's a blast. I have yet to look at other weapons in the game but I'm hoping there's other weapons like it.

why can't I just move directly between Lamps? :(

I tried using cane but I found the axe better to start and then I transitioned into saw spear which I'm using now, with skill.

Silly to say but whenever he turns into
beast mode remember that you have gun. The trick in this battle is to shoot at the boss right as he begins the attack. You'll learn to anticipate the swing of his arms. Safe bet would be to shoot too early over too late. Whenever you do it succesfully you'll hear the stagger noise, approach him quick and do a counter attack. I killed him in beast mode relatively fast doing this
.

Also for first part it's made 200000x easier if you got
music box
from a door

Thanks! I'll try doing that more often
