In the upper left hand corner where blood vials/bullets are displayed... right underneath the bullets there is a little circle that sometimes turns yellow... any idea what this means/does?

I just pressed L1 and that seems to change it. Maybe it indicates the state your weapon is in.

Having a blast with the game so far. Played mainly Dark Souls and Dark Souls II in the past.

Rolling with the 'Kirkhammer'. Just beat the third boss. Good stuff.

I just lost around 40k of souls....fuck this

Once I lost 60k souls in my 6 hours attempt to defeat Capra Demon.
After that, I never mad anymore if I lost my souls, I just be content with it since the enemy will endlessly respawn
Except Dark Souls 2, fuck that limited respawn put unnecessary pressure

I didn't see any options to upgrade (which I still am not sure if it's a different menu yet), but yeah, I just equipped it into one of my weapon's gem slots. (I could equip and unequip it however I wanted.)

Upgrade = Fortify. Like Hunter's Axe +1 for example. It uses blood shard. Same table for augmenting.

Some lifehacks for people who get stuck all the time and have issues

1. Exploit the Regain system
The Regain system allows you to get your HP back if you attack enemies shortly after suffering damage. Sometimes though you get more damage than you can regain from an enemy (because he has less HP and therefore you can do less hits), but as of right now you can keep hitting enemies until their death animation is done. I can't imagine this being intended by FROM, and it saves some Blood Phials in areas with tougher enemies that take time to kill.

2. Buy the Hunter gear
The game is really hard if you use your basic gear. Fortunately, you can buy a 4-piece armor set at the vendor in Hunter's dream for about 2500 blood echoes in total. And yeah, that armor set is pretty much a game changer for the beginning section of Bloodborne. You can do this even before the first boss. If you have issues getting 2500 blood echoes though

3. First shortcut and small farming route
NOT saying that this is a particularly good farming route, but it did help me getting the Hunter gear and some level ups quite fast. Many people miss this, but you can open up a shortcut to the bridge that leads to the first boss fight (Cleric beast). Just go down the stairs after the two wolves, go through the house, go downstairs, leave the house, follow the stairs, kill the one enemy with the torch and axe and go further and you will open up a gate. Now, what I did was to go back and instead of going into the house, you can go under the bridge where two big guys wait for you. Kill them, go through the house again, go upstairs, kill the 3 ravens + the big guy and rinse and repeast, and if you feel confident enough kill the wolves as well.
This makes about 850 per run, and about 1500 if you kill wolves as well.

4. Use the projectile weapon all the time
This is - to me- the probably most important key mechanic so far. Your weapon has the ability to stun enemies and even bosses if you time your shot right. You should NOT care about the bullets at all, since a lot of enemies drop the randomly (you can farm the dude in the wheelchair that is in the house which leads you to the first shortcut) and you can craft your own bullets if you press UP on the D-Pad, which you should totally do since blood phials drop all the time.
If you time your shot right (just shoot right before an enemy attacks), a sound will be played and you will see enemies on their knees. GET CLOSE and press R1 to do destroy enemies.

5. Upgrade your shit
You will find a bunch of bloodshards in the beginning areas of the game which you can use in the Hunter's dream to upgrade your weapons. A +1 weapon is a different beast that a regular weapon with no upgrades at all.
Also, learn the icons! Learn which attribute does your weapon scale with and improve that attribute at the puppet.

6. The first boss
The Cleric Beast is a very epic fight and will not only test your abillities but also prepare you for what's to come since this enemy can only be killed if you accept the new mechanics and use them all the time. What I mean by that is that dodging and sidestepping are essential in this fight, and because of the small area and the crazy camera this can be annoying. The Cleric Beast's moveset involve mostly his two arms which he uses for a bunch of front attacks - what helped me was to get close, waiting for him to start an attack and then dash behind him, do a few hits and evade afterwards. He has an attack where he attacks backwards, too, but will only use it if you spend too much time behind him. Another great thing about him is that you can stun him with your weapon; the gun is super helpful since you can keep your distance and repeatedly shoot him (!) until he gets stunned, which means you get close and slash his face open. If he does his scream, slash the shit out of him or throw molotovs and burn him. You can finish this fight in like 2 minutes.

7. The second boss
Few here had issues with him which is why I was kinda worried at first, but I got him on my second try. This boss is much faster and reckless than the first one, but also not a problem if you figure him out and use the environment wisely. The the biggest advantage here is that for the most time you fight a humanoid that has the same sizes as you and follows the same ruleset as you, which means you can exploit the tombstones and trees to keep your distance between him. He is deadly if you keep too much open space between you and him, so be careful.
He uses the same moveset as you: rolling, shooting, weapon transformation etc. Always keep him on lock, be ready to dodge all the time and get a feeling for his movements. If you get a better understanding about that, use your projectile right before he attacks (or when he is rolling!) to shoot and stun him and cut him open. Don't go beserk on him with normal hits though as he breaks out of hitstuns and will attack you (always do 3-4 attacks when attacking him without stun, which you should do when he does a jump attack or anything that takes time to recover).
It's pretty easy to nullify his gun and hard attacks if you keep objects between him and you, and when he reaches like 15% - 20%, he will transform into a beast. You can STILL fuck him up during transformation, and you should, but when his transformation reaches its peak you might get pushed on the ground if you are to close. His beast is fucking crazy and might kill you, but what I did was to dodge some attacks until I was behind him and then I threw a molotov to burn and kill him.

I know all of this is known to skilled players, but seems like there are some having issues here and there. Hope this might help anybody!

edit: sorry for the bad English, but my brain doesn't quite work yet after my first playing session lol

Thanks I needed this advice, the game doesnt give much direction. Being new to these types of games I need all the advice I can get. This game has kicked my ass since yesterday, still havent gotten to the first boss :/

That enemies that are close to your blood echoes can consume them after your death (glowing eyes) is just mean.

Try to gear up a few things (armor, weapons, stats) and if that doesn't help try to do it co-op with others. I dunno how the password system works but if I have the time I'd help you.

There is no reason to save up that many souls

Spend them as you get them

Workbench in hunters dream.

Haven't even seen the gem slots.

I will say, I can't count the number of times I've pressed Triangle thinking it would 'two-hand' my right hand weapon, instead wasting a blood vial. Good thing blood vials are not that hard to come by early in the game.

In case it wasn't already mentioned, the softcaps and hardcaps are:

Vitality ------ 30 / 50
Endurance -- NA / 40
Strength ---- 25 / 50
Skill --------- 25 / 50
Bloodtinge -- 25 / 50
Arcane ------ 25 / 50

I noticed after
25 STR
my damage bonus per point was less. I have no idea what Arcane is supposed to do outisde of item discovery. Many weapons have Arcane scaling on them, but so far there's no damage bonus associated with them when putting points into Arcane. For me at least.
Think the arcane stat is when you put some fire, lightning paper on your weapon elemental damage , as some weapons scale with arcane and do any damage from it , maybe there are some runes you can apply later on in the game. Flaming whip ? Sign me in.

Where am I supposed to go after I kill the turret guy? I don't see any paths. Am I supposed to buy that 10000 cathedral key?

The hell with that guy, he keeps kicking my ass. But if you go down the ladder and round the back to the right, there is a huge open area with wolves... 20 or so. Defeat them, get the item off the altar and go out the door. You'll be in a new area that connects to the locked door that you may have seen at the start of the level. That will let you bypass all that mess and get to the newly discovered area. There's a boss down there...Blood-Starved something.

This game is just....there are no words. It might replace Resident Evil 4 as my favorite game of all time. Miyazaki/FROM/Sony Japan are mad geniuses. This truly is the evolution of the Souls series.

Haha! My first taste of jolly co-op! Summoned a nice guy to help with
Father G
. SO much fun! I'll be helping with a lot of battles after I beat this beast of a game. ;)

Damn, I thought bloodborne was gonna come today but it looks like post has been and nothing... not sure though, it's like those magazines for everyone, so not sure it was the postman or not.
Got a little hope left but hope has diminished. Curse you sun! I prayed to you!

There is no reason to save up that many souls

Well, that it's not like I want to save up that many souls for my first playthrough attempt at Capra Demon you see.
But the way to his place is riddled with enemies, and I can't just blaze through them since the thieves and the dogs are quick to catch up. I kill all of them, get souls, touch my bloodstain in Capra demon area, get killed, rinse and repeat.

So I have 20 Skill and 1 additional point in Vitality.
Professional

Threaded Cane +3 and Pistol

I have the Hunter's outfit (both the one you buy and the one you find)

I cannot beat
Father Gascoigne
. I don't know why I'm struggling so much with the first boss. I get him close. REAL close but I just can't finish. I'm even using the
music box
you get from the
little girl in the window
to stun him throughout the first stage.

I fear that Bloodborne is a "younger man's game" and I don't have the reflexes for it anymore. If I suck this much with the first boss...ergh...the rest of the game is going to chew me up I imagine.

I summoned another player and we knocked him off the tower. Easy kill

Ok, so my first venture into the Souls Series, and I have had quite a few Noob moments, but I am loving this game. Wow, what a learning curve at first. (I posted this in the Performance thread, but wanted to share it where it belongs).

After your first Lycan encounter, in the first 5 minutes of the game, I was killed pretty quick, that bare handed fight was tough. Got spawned to the Dream World and thought "Oh, you were supposed to die so you could see this world." I looked around a bit, read some notes, and teleported back to the Hospital. The crazy thing was, I completely missed the messenger that gives you your first weapons. So I proceeded, weaponless.

I must have fought that Lycan encounter at least 25 times, bare handed, getting close to beating him, then getting killed, over and over again. Finally, I did it. I about ripped my shirt off I was so pumped up. I thought "Now I get a weapon, look out!" Well, that wasn't the case. So I proceeded out into the square to continue my quest, bare handed, looking for weapons I should have already had in the first 5 minutes of the game.

About 30 minutes later, I thought "Something isn't right here!" So I pulled off the whole restart, and started the game completely over. This time, when I died in the Lycan encounter, I noticed in the dream world the messenger who gives you your weapons. I couldn't believe it. They were there the whole time, and I missed it. So now, I thought, I am really going to kick some ass.

I approached the Lycan again, ready to rip him up with my Axe and Pistol, only to find I couldn't use them. I kept going into my inventory and trying to click on "USE" but "USE" was blacked out. I didn't know I had to go into a separate menu system and equip them. I just assumed you HAD to get past the Lycan bare handed, and then maybe you could use your weapons when you got outside. So I proceeded to fight and beat the Lycan again, bare handed. This was much easier once I figured out to dodge, get behind him, charge attack him from behind, and it was pretty much over.

It wasn't until I got out into the Town Square again, that I was trying every menu, that I noticed I had to go to a different Menu System to actually equip the weapons, and not try to "USE" them in my Inventory. Then I proceeded to fight, and fight, and fight those crazy little townspeople who are all over the place. I was much better at picking them off 2 at a time, but when I would get in crowds bigger than that, I would get owned.

Now I am stuck trying to get back to this part where I got in too deep, lost all my blood echos, and I need to reclaim them. It was like my first 2400 or something, lol. Looks like I am going to have a lot more learning to do, but I am loving every minute of this. It doesn't hold your hand, it doesn't have any real tutorials, it kinda throws you in there and says "Good Luck!" I appreciate that. I can see how this isn't for everyone, but I can see how addicting this game can get if you are willing to put in the time to figure out the mechanics. Wish me luck!

well that was anticlimatic

finally made my way to
turret guy
and the fight consisted of me forward dashing and then him backwards dashing to his doom

He's not the first boss, he's actually the second.

You probably skipped the first boss on accident. He's
all the way down the bridge, the one with the 2 werewolves at the beginning of it.

Need some help...

The game says I can't play Online because it is not full installed. But it's not installing anymore. Anyone else run into this? (preordered the digital version)

On the other hand, the Offline play is awesome. Anyone have a strategy for save points in the game? Am I doing it right when I'm running back to the same save point I started at to upgrade things because they are few and far between?

Cant read the thread (still avoiding spoilers). I made the mistake of listening to the Bombcast and they spoiled a shit ton so I had to turn it off. Thanks Brad and Dan!

Anyway, I made it far last night. Got to the 2nd boss, beat him 2nd try. It was a bad ass battle. The first boss I also beat last night and he kicked my ass repeatedly.

I still havent found any weapons better than what I started with. But I did finally find some new gear to wear, so thats legit.

Right now, im at the part where
you have to take the guy with the gattling gun out or head into that lower dungeon where the ritual is taking place.

This game is actually hard. Ive beaten all 3 souls games and this is a nice breath of fresh air in terms of challenge goes. I fucking LOVE how everyone is interconnected and there are shortcuts and paths to go everywhere. This game is oozing with love. You can tell this was the A souls team. No question.

GOTY. I dont think anything will beat it.

Yeah, the first environment is kind of a mess. Tons of shortcuts and some areas kind of blend together. I spent like 30 minutes figuring out where that girl is after defeating the second boss.

I will say, I can't count the number of times I've pressed Triangle thinking it would 'two-hand' my right hand weapon, instead wasting a blood vial. Good thing blood vials are not that hard to come by early in the game.

Glad I'm not the only one who did that constantly in the first few hours.

If Dark Souls don't have unkillable skeletons at the graveyard, many people perhaps will ended up killing the Pinwheel as their first boss lol

*rubs face*

This game...

Should I do the real first boss then or keep grinding on the one I've been doing?

Thanks for filling me in.
