So, all Bloodborne players who haven't played Souls before, how's it going?

It's pretty hard because the enemies do so much damage. The worst enemies are the ones with the guns though, they just pick you off while you're fighting other guys.

It's fun though, I really like the game mechanics. It's just really tense because you know if you die, you have to fight all those enemies again(which might not be a bad thing if they drop blood vials).

Me and my buddy are both relatively newcomers to Souls games, though I've played about an hour or so of each of the previous installments. So far for me the most frustrating part is the beginning. It took me a couple of hours to just clear the streets and get to the bridge, at which point you can probably guess what happened
wolves
. Anyway, I killed the first boss, and just got to the second boss.Things are going a lot more smoothly for me now, either because I'm better or I have the Saw Spear, but it doesn't hurt that I can skip the "problem" areas from earlier.

Meanwhile my buddy can't clear the area around the bonfire. He's frustrated, and he dies a lot. In party chat he said a couple of times "I just don't know what I'm supposed to be doing." I told him what to do and gave him advice, but I feel like the beginning of this game is hard just for the sake of being hard. When you compare the
"streets" level leading up to the Cleric Beast and the "aqueduct" level leading up to the Father, the aqueduct is much, much easier. There's nothing close to the overwhelming packs you encounter on the streets. The closest thing to overwhelming is probably the cluster of crawlers around the item, but they're very, very slow moving and easily dispatched.

I think the game is good, but I also think the game could have done with a legitimate tutorial section for new people.

I only played like 20 hours of Dark Souls 1 but I feel like Bloodborne is harder especially the bosses.

I feel like the combat is just much faster (based on the hour and change I played of he other souls games). It actually reminds me of Devil May Cry.

Just downed FG, took three tries but really wasn't too bad of a fight once I learned the mechanics. Honestly expected to get frustrated with this game and regret the purchase, but this game has me hooked now that it's clicking more and more. Definitely one of the best experiences I've had so far this gen!

Weren't there reviews saying they beat the bosses in one try? Were they talking about the later bosses? I'm still stuck on the Cleric Beast.

Same here man. I remember beating the first boss in dark souls in my 2nd or 3rd attempt. Cleric Beast however is giving me loads of trouble and I don't see myself beating it anytime soon.

I've only ever watched playthroughs of demon, dark and dark 2. never had the right console for them at the right time. It's definitely harder than it looks but after a couple hours I was getting the gist of the combat and crowd control. The game is a blast, it feels so good to finally have a chance to enter my own from software nightmare.

This is my first souls-like game and Im having a lot of fun! I've already beat two bosses, leveled up my character, and weapon. The difficulty is what drove me away from the series in the first place, and its certainly has taken some time to get use to. For instance, I dont get really upset when I lose blood echos anymore. I also realize that having to tread through the same area a bunch of times is just part of the gameplay loop. That part can feel way too repetitive at times, but well, Im a fan of Destiny so I cant complain about it too much.

The inconsistent story in dark souls drove me crazy as well. I figured if I didnt know what the story wanted me to do, then I would get frustrated. However, I heard that the developer of the game makes these stories inconsistent because it reminds him of how he was reading fantasy novels in English. he could only read a little bit of English, and the result is that you kinda know whats going on and you kinda dont. I love when developers take experiences from thier lives and put them into their games. So I dont always agree with it, but I can respect it. Plus, speculating of all of the story elements is kinda fun.

Besides, the "story telling" is atompsheric and done through exploration. I get very excited when I open up a new area because the environements are so expansive and I dont know what to expect.

I'm not quite sure I get the appeal of them. I barely touched one of these games until Bloodborne and I have to say the first 2 hours I spent with it was genuinely terrible.

After a third hour , things started to fall into place and I understood more of how the game was meant to be played but man, dem load times are just brutal. I think it's 90% of my problem right there.

Sure, ideally I'd love it if this had a "normal" mode where you can restart boss fights in exactly the same state that you last did them in with no need to trek back there, I'd also love it if you could bank blood essence without actually having to return to hunters dream. Also, it would be super great if the enemies in the entire first level did about 75% less damage to me while I'm trying to learn how to play but ... making the game easier to get into would apparently betray the series tradition- it needs to be as needlessly obtuse and complicated as possible.

I could rant and rave even more but when it comes down to it , the biggest problem is a twofold issue- the load time is 35 seconds every death which means the biggest punishment isn't really the loss of your blood essence but instead it's the half a minute + you get to stare at a loading screen and , it's too easy to die early one. This means you are going to be wasting a sizeable portion of that first 2-3 hour play session staring at a black screen with a logo.

I never play DS games before. I have to change my mindset when playing this game. Usually when playing other similar games like DMC, Ninja Gaiden it even MGR, I just go straight to enemies and attack all the way. But this game cannot be played in that way. I have to be more patient, learn how to utilize your weapon etc etc. Still struggling with the first area though. But loving it so far.

I'm more interested in those who have played prior games but for whatever reason disliked them and still got bloodborne. Was the setting enough to change your mind? now that you 'get' the series will you go back and play the other games?

I had a much better go of it tonight. Played for 90 minutes or so. Got past the villager mob and stumbled on shortcuts both back to the lantern and to the first boss. He wiped me out of course. I leveled up, putting the point in vitality, upgraded my saw cleaver, and grinders some blood to buy the hunter armor. So I'm set to make some better runs at it tomorrow evening.

Beat the first boss on my first try. 10 Molotovs to the face.

Setting was a big part, but my main thing was this: I had no patience at the time. I still don't have as much as I would like but I can actually go about things methodically and try to learn my enemies weaknesses (even if I die a lot in the process) so I can kick it's ass later.

The setting and definitely the faster paced gameplay.

I never played a souls game before but just had a six hour session with alot dying but 2 bosses down.. Easily the best RPG i played in a long time.

Played 4-5 hours of Dark Souls, and I didn't hate it, but I just couldn't get into it like everyone I knew. I just didn't like the setting, and I felt like I was making progress at a slug's pace. With Bloodborne on the other hand, I absolutely am loving it! The setting was a big reason that I decided to give it a try, and also because I did like the combat in Souls -- it was my favorite part -- it just felt too slow. The combat in Bloodborne is slightly faster, and makes me feel like I'm moving at a better pace. I haven't died as much as I did in Dark Souls either, which is encouraging, but I've only beaten two bosses so I assume it's only going to get harder and harder as I keep playing. I reached where the third boss is before calling it quits for the night; I have a feeling it's going to be a challenge ...

One day, I might go back to Dark Souls and give it another try, but I really don't know. The setting still doesn't interest me like Bloodborne's does.

I've watched a few play throughs of DeS and DaS, but this is my first time playing. It's starting to click for me, after getting use to the controls. I love the setting of the game, but I still hate horror so I'm pushing through since I enjoy the gameplay.

That's where I'm at too before I called it a night. I finally made it past the 20 dudes just to get mauled lol

I saw a really good message near those guys that helped a lot. I'll tag it below.

Fire is effective

I'm loving reading all these impressions from obviously dedicated gamers turning their attention to the Souls type. Fascinating reads, please keep them coming

I'm really fucking loving it. I just have to get use to the controls more. For some stupid ass reason, I keep on thinking square is another attack button.

Riposte in this game is amazIng. I love it. Just have to get use to regain system also since my instinct after getting hit is step back.

I have never played a Souls games but have seen each of the games being played. While my interest in previous entries was pretty...mild...what I've seen on Bloodborne has piqued my interest considerably.

Maybe one day when I have plenty of free time and money I will play, and likely fall in love, with this game.

I'm now wondering, as someone who's enjoying this game, whether I should pick up Dark Souls II on my PS4 or not. Haven't played that yet.

Might as well! It's different and imo less polished, but still a good Souls experience and superior to its predecessor in some ways while worse in others. If you enjoy the general feel of this it should be enjoyable as well.

I just started. Played a couple hours of the three previous souls games. Loved watching the games, the combat was so clever and well built, but I just never enjoyed playing myself. I don't know if it's simplified or what, the "faster" Bloodborne combat gets me on that nervous edge that drives me to improve. I'm awful right now but I NEED to get good. Fantastic game. 12 out of 7 Red Jaguars.

It makes me happy to see so many positive reactions here. When I saw the threads I mentioned in the OP I thought "Man these guys are gonna hate the game and there will be so many 'fell for GAF hype, never again!' threads", but this is great.
Give it a month or two. Once the new game smell wears off, we'll see which of them still have the patience for this type of game. :P

I personally hope I'm wrong, I'd love to see the fannase for these types of games keep growing.

Oh easier than BB? Very interesting, might just get it :)
Yeah. It's still has it's fair share of challenge, but it's definitely the easiest of the bunch. Although there's one optional boss in particular that nearly drove me insane. Still one of my favorite games last gen though.

This is the range I'm in. I played a fair bit and enjoyed it, but I got to Ornstein and Smough and just couldn't beat them and gave up. Didn't help that I had a real hard time finding anyone to summon into my world so I never even got help in the few times I tried.

I'm really interested in Bloodborne because yes I do prefer the setting, but besides that the combat seems better to me. And perhaps most importantly, the game is hot right now so I wouldn't have so much trouble trying to find someone to help me if I really struggled.

I haven't played 2, but the lore and the theme of the game provides a nice contrast to BB. Its more shield parry and sword back stabs, and less evasion and speed.

Oh and its more dragons-like, and less werewolf.

Almost to my surprise, I'm really starting to enjoy this game. Knowing how an average Souls game is played, I've had almost no trouble getting past the first area. The biggest obstacle so far has been the Cleric Beast and even then towards the end of my session, I started to get a pretty good feel for the fight.

Love the combat. I never block in action games, so this is right up my alley.

My friend has never played a Souls game and is picking this up in a few days.

Cannot WAIT to hear his rage through the party chat. lol.

He also thought we could go through the whole game coop with my help, but that's obviously not the case with the way the game is setup.

so i was fighting the gatling gunner on top of the tower and i shot him off the tower, easy fight but now i can't get to loot his body for the badge simply because i cant find his body. And idea?or do i have to restart the game?

any help?

First Souls game here.

I died quite a few times leading up to the first boss learning the game mechanics, but I was able to finish off the first boss on my first try.

Made it all the way past the
boar
in the
sewers
before the second boss and fell to my death lol. Thankfully I was able to initiate the
elevator
shortcut before that happened. Lost about 5000 of whatever the currency is called.

I'll be playing more tomorrow.

The only tutorial the game needs is making sure you are aware of the controls.

It doesn't need to spoonfeed you where to go. Figure that out yourself. The level design is very logically laid out. You naturally are inclined to go where you see a path and it all progresses very naturally at the beginning. I don't have empathy for people who feel like they need to be told where to go in the beginning of this game.

Warp back to the hunters dream, then go back to the tower. Your loot should be up there, sitting by his gatling gun.

While I haven't gotten BB yet(will someday), you can beat most Dark Souls 2 bosses mostly in 1 try or a few like I did. It's not like Dark Souls 1 and Demon's Souls where it took me more than 10 tries to beat one boss, lol.

All I do in Bloodborne is die. (._.)

I've only played for about 90 minutes though. Still haven't made it past the large group of enemies in front of the big door in the beginning area. I think I'm getting slightly better. Pebbles are my friend.
