Total Souls noob, just crawled my way to the first boss fight after several hours and finally unlocked leveling (without beating the boss, naturally). Is there a checkpoint (lantern) close by after beating the boss (Cleric Beast), or is there still a long way to go for that?

Once you beat a boss a lantern appears where you killed it.

There's gonna be on at the end of the place where you fight him. Don't expect it to become a pattern though.

Just picked it up today. I can't seem to ever get someone to join my game, though. Is there a server issue, or are there specific settings I need to worry about? Been running around with this bell icon on for what seems like 4 hours now and still nobody joining to help.

Wait a second. I lit a lamp after going through a small forest and opening a gate (to the right of the cathedral lamp area) but I can't teleport back to that lamp? What. The. Fuck. Maybe I just don't know the name for that lamp?

So I just got the Chikage, and it pretty much sucks. From what it seems like I will be using the Holy Blade and the Mercy Blades. Focusing more so on str than skill, I want to have some arcane so I can use the old hunter bones but I don't know if the arcane is worth it right now. .

Bring strength to 25, then skill to 25. It will only scale with arcane if you use an arcane blood gem on the weapon. Take note of the increase in ATK each level would give you. Pick the one that gives you more ATK...
STR will give the most investment for point until 25, at which point leveling skill to 25 will add more than STR would.

So no, you're still getting an ATK bonus from skill (you can see the ATK rating go up if you put another point into it).. but you can also see that you will get more for Strength.

Also, upgrading your weapon is more important

Got it, much appreciate the tip. In your opinion is arcane with increasing then? I heard it increases drop rates and elemental damage.

Yeah my weapon is sitting at +3, still waffling between upgrading the sword or axe to +4 (only have material for 1). Stuck at 4th boss at the moment at lvl 29, hoping to beat him later tonight.

Dodging into boss attacks is oddly not a bad strategy if you get the timing down.

Electric fucking asshole skeleton boss guy was not cool with this.

You can unlock a shortcut to the boss fight from the Central Yarnham lantern. Look behind the 2 wolves for a building entrance that will take you straight to the lantern.

In these types of games... ALWAYS search for a shortcut from the lamp post to a boss before going for an encounter... they are designed this way.

I'm still using the Yharnam Hunter set. When does an upgraded set come along? I have 7 altogether but they're all pretty weak.
Hunter is best all around. You're supposed to switch depending on the situation. Black church is great for fighting guns, student is great for arcane, etc.

I'm at lvl 69 right now, and I was told a little earlier that my defense was low. What should it be at? I got it up to 178 for physical as of now.

Umm have you gotten
the Oedun relic? You get it from killing the blanket person in the chapel or in that secret place. I think it's not from what the church says, but I forget

I'll have to look into it. We know that
Yharnum the person is at the very least important (aside from the obvious) because we hear her unborn baby crying throughout the game and she takes residence in the deepest levels of an ancient labyrinth below the church, which led me to believe she was the source of the blood
.

Dodge more! Unfortunately you can't really do anything but avoid it.. I wouldn't dare try to parry that.

Dodging is pretty much it. Try to bait the slow claw attack and shoot him to get a frontstab in, and dodge the other attacks. Makes it a pretty easy fight.

I actually have an easy life getting it down to 20% but then I feel like it's spamming the shit out of that attack and I always fail to dodge at least once. Frustrating.

Not really though in any case, and it uses up much more stamina. Unless you have no patience, the cane is better and safer. Faster, less cool down, longer reach, and you can put out more attacks (with each Attack stunning someone). Better than the axe again lol.
Yes, really. The axe straight up does more damage in the beginning of the game.

And if you want to start talking about stamina, you can do the 2H charge attack, regen a pixel of stamina, then do it again.

what're everyone's favored weapons so far? So far i've just stuck with saw cleaver and the axe to adequate success. I just found the rifle spear and I'm building towards 16 strength for dat kirkHAMMAH

I just noticed that one of the greatest optional bosses,
Ebrietas, Daughter of Cosmos
is hidden right behind
Vicar Amelias altar. That this THING resides right behind the most important church of the city ... is unnerving, and so fitting. There's some lovecraftian nightmare in every building of the city it seems.

The church was clearly communing with or praying to cosmic monsters. Perhaps parlaying with them as well to the detriment of the people (Celestial Emissary implies a level of diplomacy).

Right, but that's only half the story. It's not always one hit first of all, and since it's slower you better hit everyone around you in that hit or they'll get you while you're recovering. You see what I mean?

Compare that to the cane which covers more distance and has more room for error because new shots come out faster. Since it uses less stamina, you get more chances too, so the fact that it takes more hits doesn't matter.

I hope that helped :)

Well I mean, that's what the church is for, so that makes sense right? These aren't Christian churches haha

Ludwig's Holy Blade, and Cannon as firearm. My character plays like Guts, but I named him Griffith and gave him long white hair :P.

Pure strength build Kirkhammer for me. Love kiting away the biggest threat from a large group of enemies and instantly killing it with a charge hammer smash. Fast sword is great all around and I love just smashing up large groups of small enemies with the hammer when I get the opening.

I've found the big fat guy that I've heard stomping around. Should I go give him a try? xD

I'm currently playing with no HUD which probably isn't the cleverest idea for a noob like myself but I can't help taking screenshots :3

The level design in this game and the lore... god damn!

I wish there was a way to respawn enemies without having to go back and forth between Hunter's Dream.

Yeah, that's one of my biggest complaints right now. They need to patch in the ability to reset an area by touching the lamp, rather than having to endure two long load screens. It doesn't make any sense not to allow that.

I'm happy with Ludwigs with 25str/skill and good physical damage bloodstones. Not sure if I even got a good arcane stone.

So the
Vilebloods
are the good guys?

The Vileblood
are a "ends justify the means" kind of group it seems like. They are taking their vengeance on a church who wronged them, as they see it. They're not "good" per se, but are just another group bringing despair (that they feel is justified) into an already horrible nightmare.
