Is there a non-spoilery guide to the chalice dungeon mechanics?

I went through the first one, but honestly don't understand the point of it all. Just curious about the mechanics/system.

Meat sack guys in Yahar'gul are pretty fucking infuriating, and the area is pretty maddening in general. This is a MASSIVE spike in difficulty from Old Yharnam.

You aren't really supposed to be there yet. Grab the items, farm some resources, there's a secret or two... but yeah... you can come back later. Those two sack bastards can be cheesed for
mats quite easily in the stairwell they cannot enter
.

Confirmed! Prices in the stores has nothing to do with what level you are. I'm lvl 4 and the price of the echoes, along with everything else has increased.

They increase with the story progression, and blood vials cap themselves at 900 echoes each (NG+).

on fire since when? nice find!

Thanks!

I think you can lure the enemies of the area into the fire or scare them, anything like that

What I noticed about that part is that the fire kills a bunch of the worshiping enemies down there... making the fight through the area much easier.

Is that all? That's disappointing, I was hoping for some actual effect like setting the windmill on fire in Dark Souls 2.

how do you know about this? :P

There is a tunnel behind the lycan village (with the big trap hole in the center), go through that tunnel to end up at an underground lake, cross it and enter another tunnel, climb the ladders from there.

hahahaha. Fair ;)

Thanks! Will check it out. Appreciate the quick responses, all.

Is there any point to better guns? I just invested in Repeating pistol. It uses double ammo, still weak with damage and isnt any faster. I just don't see the purpose, I might as well keep on stuning enemies with the first pistol, unless I am missing something?

You're not really missing anything, at best you'll take a good chunk out of enemies with the regular guns when you upgrade them to high levels, but you'll never do serious or significant damage with most of them. There are exceptions though and I just made a big post about guns here on the previous page: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=157971040&postcount=16065

You can escape fairly easily. I think the area is meant to be explored later on. I was definitely too weak for it when I first ended up there.

I've read that's like an end-game-ish area or something, +6 weapons recommended at least. What level are ya?

Will be going there today to make a suicide run for that armor set.

They got a lot easier once I remembered to parry their attacks - I usually start by dashing in and getting some hits until they activate that red glow effect, and then after that I hang back and parry. Seems to do the trick okay.

Two builds for PVP hopefully but I was wondering if anyone know if you can beat the hard dungeons with a level 75. Also with these builds I plan to use Holy Sword, Mercy Blades, Cannon (a nice surprise), Hunter Pistol (parrying), and two arcane spells.

Cruel Fate (10): 100
  • Vitality (10): 50
  • Endurance (12): 20
  • Strength (10): 30
  • Skill (9): 30
  • Bloodtinge (5): 5
  • Arcane (14): 15

Ha I found the canon! But I'm 9 strength short of wielding it. :(

It is worht those 9 extra strength my friend.

You say that and yet you apparently haven't encountered the squid monsters that can stun you, grab you, and steal Insight and health from you.

Has anyone found a way to farm blood chunks?

Yeah, there is a decent run in a late game area. U
pper
C
athedral
.
Start at the lamp, go left up the stairs past the slug guys, kill the dude with the scythe, kill the guy in the room on the left, go out in the hallway and kill the blue-eyed werewolf (can cheese him by luring him back to the doorway, and attack him from there).

Then go out to the main area, quickly run down the stairs in a circle and bait the 3 blue-eyed werewolves to follow you back to that doorway you came from. Can also cheese these werewolves from attacking beyond the doorway. Kill those 3, run downstairs and lure the 4th one and kill it. With 200+ item discovery, they usually are decent about dropping 1 blood chunk per run, plus blood shards or twin blood stones.

If you want to farm for echos too, you can also backstop / visceral attack the squid head guys in the area too with minimal risk if you do it right, and they drop a decent amount of echos. All in all, you can do the whole run in less than 10 minutes and about 22K echos (if you have the Moon rune equipped, I have the Eye rune equipped too for additional Item Discovery). Then to finish it up I leave one of the slug guys by the lamp at the entrance alive, and I run back and let him kill me via Frenzy so that I respawn at the lamp and the enemies are reset and kill the slug to get your echos back, without having to warp out to Hunters Dream.

Oh, ok, you got real players. In both modes I still got two AI NPCs, one with axe and the other with cane.

Yeah I got those too. Fun fun bell woman :)
People are scared in MP right now. First guy didn't know what to do and just rolled around while I crushed him/shot him. Second guy looked at my flaming sword and took off running before I chased him down.

Finally beat Rom on my own!

And jesus christ, I'm getting hammered at Yar Agul. Couldn't even make it past the first group of enemies.

Sometimes you run into areas that are too hard for your level. Go to another area first and go back there later.

So im at R
om
i can do some damage but he always oneshots me all his attacks, even the
small spiders
kill me in one hit.

Did i miss something is there some other place i should go? i came from the
forbidden forest

Do we know anything about soft caps or diminishing returns on stats yet? My STR is 25, and I'm wondering if i should focus more on VIT and END now.

edit: Also, I put a few points into arcane, and now my item discovery is up to 106. I seem to pick up more vials and bullets now

There's a very slight decrease per point at 25, but 26-50 still gives you a ton of stats. After 50 it drops off pretty harshly, but you'll still get small increases all the way to 99. Though you should definitely focus on other stats once you get one to 50.

The exception being Endurance which hard caps your Stamina at 40. It still gives Defense stat increases past that, but that's where you should stop with it. Getting to 50 Vitality and 40 Endurance is totally worth it, you'll be able to get a lot more swings and rolls in and you'll have a ton more hit points and you'll definitely feel the damage mitigation from the Defense stats.

Uhm, why isn't my Pistol equipped? Bug? He has nothing in his left hand even though the Pistol has a red icon on it indicating it's equipped.

I'm level 30 with a hunter axe +3 and a hunter blunderbuss +2. Makes sense that it's meant to be escaped and taken on later, since
I was forced here after dying to the meat sack dude outside the cathedral ward
. So if they're going for a whole prison break sort of thing, that's actually kind of cool. I got to the lantern above the jail cells in the main church area with two meat sack dudes, but not sure where to go from there. I suppose I'll just keep exploring.

Where's the armor set you're talking about?

Press right d-pad (or is left?). Basically you can have 2 weapons equipped and switch between the two with the d-pad.

You probably have your second weapon slot active, which doesn't have another gun equipped there. From the menu you can equip two trick weapons and two firearms to swap between like that on the fly. I think it's left & right on the d-pad to swap between your alternate weapons for either hand.

Well I came here because another GAFer a few pages ago suggested, after beating BSB, I go back to the Cathedral Ward and head outside, watching out for a meat sack dude. I saw the meat sack dude, and not realizing he could one shot me, died to him. I then woke up in a prison cell in Yahar'gul rather than respawning at a lantern like usual, so I just assumed this is where I was supposed to be.

Wooooooooo! That was the most satisfying thing ever!

I found my way back there, took my time and got my echoes back! I even got revenge on the damn man beast and found me some new gear :D

Do I need Arcane? I lose quite a bit equipping this stuff.

Ending question:
Which ending is recommended for my first play through? I've heard rejecting him will get me a badge. What about true ending? I'm assuming I should go with one of those two first, but not sure which.

Has anyone else stopped fearing about losing a lot of Blood Echos? I've noticed that even if I lose 50k (I'm like half-way? so still a decent amount), there ends up being no worry about losing them since gaining that much back is kinda easy. One thing I don't feel with this game is the sense of "oh god I need to get my souls blood echos back!" like I felt in Dark Souls 2. In DkS2, in normal NG outside of bosses every enemy dropped a small amount of souls and never increased that much over course of game. So when I lost 50k in that game, would take a long time to get those back (not to mention stupid Soul Memory limit) in NG.

In Bloodborne, even normal enemies later in game give you so many Blood Echos, that losing a bunch and then ranking them back up is just slightly inconvenient.

Thank you. This gives me guidance for many levels to come.

yeah, you're not supposed to die to the sack dude. Being in Yahar'gul is bad juju right now

Yeah I know you mean. Just hit the latern and go somewhere else. Probably a couple bosses to beat before you head back there, unless you wanna farm twin blood shards.

Third ending! Google the secret end. I'd suggest it.

Or all 3 via save scum for the trophies :P
