Have a question about NG+. If I finish then restart, do my Chalice's reset where I don't have them and the ones I have placed get removed? I'd finish now and just finish the Chalice's later on but I'm almost finished and don't want to lose all of that progress.

Also, will my
umbilical cords carry over so I can get the true ending? I have two of them, so will those two I got not show up anymore?

Anyone know? Getting off work in an hour and like to know because I'm booting this baby up when I get home lol

I've dumped the majority of my points into Skill. Hope I don't regret it.

I was on three letter boss
(ROM)
and ran out of vials so I was going to go farming and come back.
Ended up screwing around and got myself into
(The Unseen City.)
Got out of there and tried out a Chalice Dungeon. Chalice Dungeons are pretty rad. Found a bunch of materials for more dungeons.
Got out of there and went back to
(The Unseen City.)
First try STOMPED the beast boss there
(Pearl?Paarl)
.

Wait a minute... What was I doing again?
Very good game :]

Quoting myself to show things I've added to my little guide, and to promote it. (I will keep adding things if/when I think of them.

Gaf, here is a little guide I put together to help you get informed about Chalice Dungeons. I'm a Junior, so if someone wants to make this a thread of it's own, or put it in the OP. that's fine with me, If it's old or not useful enough that's cool too. Hope it helps!

So, You're Going To Start Chalicing (item name and location spoilers).

Things to know:

Why should I do Chalice Dungeons?
Chalice dungeons provide unique game experiences. There are multiple unique bosses inside chalice dungeons. I have fought at least 7 unique bosses in chalice dungeons that don't appear in the main game, and I know that there are more bosses I haven't seen. Chalice dungons also provide the chance to get unique weapon forms which have different blood gem slots. I know of at least 1 weapon
beast claw
that is entirely unique to the chalice dungeon and can't be found elsewhere at all. Chalice Dungeons are also where the very best blood gems are found. There also may or may not be special Caryll runes found in them. Finally, they provide endless new gameplay, including new traps, enemy locations and an endless array of randomized new dungeon.

Where do I find Chalices?
There are four basic types of chalice and one special type:
Pthumeru Chalice: Drops off the boss of Old Yarnham
Hintertomb Chalice: Drops in the second layer of the Central Pthumeru Chalice
Ailing Loran Chalice: Drops off of the boss of the Nightmare Frontier.
Great Isz Chalice: Defeat the boss at the Altar of Despair.

These 4 basic chalice types are found as items. Additional chalices of these types that make deeper dungeons are found inside the basic chalice dungeons. For example: The Central Pthumeru Chalice spawns a new dungeon in the Pthumeru tileset. The Central Pthumeru Chalice is a reward found in the Pthumeru Chalice Dungeon.

Short Root Ritual Chalice: allows you to use the makeshift altar. This is designed for co-op. To find it, you must complete the Lower Hintertomb dungeon. It can also be found in some Pthumeru root chalices, and, I assume, In other root chalices. Lower Hintertomb seems to be a guaranteed drop.

Are all Chalice Dungeons random?
No. The majority of chalice dungeons are pre-formed and will have the same layout for everybody. Any chalice that has the name "root" in its title will be randomly generated.

Making a dungeon
To make a chalice dungeon, walk up to one of headstone to the left of the doll in the hunter's dream. To actually spawn a dungeon you will need to have a chalice in your possession and some materials. Making the dungeon consumes some amount of blood echoes and whatever materials the chalice requires,Early on it's merely a bit of ritual blood, but more difficult chalice get more extravagant in their requirements. Most chalice materials are found as rewards in other chalice dungeons. For example: A dungeon depth 2 will likely drop "ritual blood (3)"

The Makeshift Altar is for Co-op
The Makeshift Altar is for Co-op. It allows you to join someone in their dungeon without making your own. (The following is stolen from reddit:) You both set your password. One of you enters a dungeon and uses the Beckoning Bell. The other searches for co-op at the Makeshift Altar to join him.

What is Depth?
Depth is a measure of enemy difficulty in a chalice dungeon. Depth 1 could be tackled by any character, as long as they take care. However, difficulty jumps up quickly. My level 90 character is always at risk of death in a depth 4 dungeon, and I died multiple times in depth 3 dungeons. Be warned.

What are "Layers?"
Layers are levels within a chalice dungeon. Each layer will have a single boss behind a locked door. somewhere within the dungeon is a switch which unlocks the door.

Fetid Offering?
Some of this is still pretty unknown. Performing a fetid offering consumes extra reagents when making the dungeon and is said to increase the chalice difficulty while also improving the item drops. Please PM me if you know more.

Why are the Enemies Endless?
Bum rush bell maidens! Bell maidens can completely destroy you because they spawn endless lines of powered-up monsters. Kill 2 or 3 red mobs and then immediately rush and kill the maiden while they respawn. When the maiden is dead the enemies de-spawn.

Known traps
Rolling boulders
Pressure plate enemy spawners
Pressure plate arrows
Poison incense censors
Poison Puddles
Holes in floors in hallways
Cannons
Exploding jars
Oil covered puddles

TIPS
Where to grind for echoes: If I am having a particularly tough time, I may need to restock my bullets and vials. I recommend going to the (end game area)
Nightmare of Mensis: mid tier.
It takes 3 or 4 minutes tops to get almost 60,000 echoes. Just kill the first 3 shadow enemies, backstab the pig to death and then run past the 2 pigs and 4 shadows. The pigs and shadows will fight each other and then you can clean up the rest. Easy.

Keep leveling: I have a character dedicated to Chalices now. Stuff gets so hard that you may be wise to just keep pumping those stats.

Shining Coins! USE THESE TO MARK WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN. Some Chalice dungeons can spiral in on themselves Shining Coins can help you keep better track of where you have searched. I drop them at door jambs, on the side of the door that I came from.

Carry a fire weapon. Some enemies resist physical damage and having fire on hand can really help ease killing them.

There are often multiple doors off the main hall in each layer. Some side doors of dungeons will be found behind the locked door but before the boss. Keep your eyes peeled. You can miss rooms full of treasure chests if you don't. I missed a treasure chest containing an extra chalice because I failed to see a side door.

Parry Bosses: many of the dungeon bosses are hard hard hard, but they can be parried. This is an invaluable tactic in controlling the fights.

Complete side doors one at a time: Systematically completing one entrance to a layer can make it easier to continue your run if you die. Once you have explored an entire entrance (assuming they don't link up, which is often but not always the case.) you can move on to the next one. Haphazard exploration can lead to missed treasure.

Hug a wall: In a complicated maze of corridors, consider always hugging the right/left wall, to ensure you get to every room in the wing.

You don't have to kill everything. Seriously, sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. run past some stuff, especially if it's big, slow and won't follow you too far.

How are other people playing this in terms of guides. Are you just winging it, or loosely following a guide. I kinda wanna play on my own steam, but using a guide in Demons Souls helped me out a lot.

I'm basically playing blind but occasionally looking up an item that sounds important or an interesting looking weapon when they're mentioned here. I'm also watching ENB play through it after I've cleared an area. Only other thing would be asking for boss tips here and there.

When/how can I start using runes?

You need to go to
Hemwick Charnel Lane, and fight the boss there, you go right when exiting the cathedral and then go far left when you hit the forest and eventually you should hit a gate that you will open into Hemwick Charnel Lane. If I remember correctly.

Guys, where should I go first? I like optional areas.
1. Hemwick Charnel Lane
2. Forbidden Woods
3. Lecture Building
I'm thinking 3,1,2. Any tips?
That's a good order. #1 Is an easy area and you reap rewards there.

oh
so if Ive already killed him and the vicar and withces have I just wasted my souls?
i remember a gate saying that you need a seal to open but I opened that with a device on the other side
Sadly you've wasted echoes. You can open the gate on the other side as you mentioned you did.

If I take the elevator to the right in the Cathedral Ward is there anywhere else I can go?
I go all the way up and the door is locked. I fall all the way down and it just is a dead end eventually.
You're supposed to go down that tower. There shouldn't be a dead end if you
fall into the pit
.

When I ring the sinister bell, it says it's looking for a ring of another sinister bell.. So another person ringing the sinister bell? I thought if you rang the small resonant bell you could be invaded ?
Small Resonant Bell allows people to invade you against your will if the
Maiden comes
, but the Sinister is for people who specifically want to PVP together.

So, what subtlety am I missing after going through F
orbidden Woods
?
I found one single lamp at the start, had to go through loads of bullshit and now that I've beaten the both I get two lamps that are literally 30 seconds apart. What's up with that? Are they just trolling me?

Having been through 1 and 2 this afternoon. I'd say keep 2 after 1, it felt harder and doesn't look very optional.
No idea what 3 is lol.

You must be joking. It was the least boss I beat and I'm 41 hours into the game.

Depends on the order you took I suppose.
I beat the witches fifth. Hemwick Charnel Lane is still super early into the game. One quarter is about right.

10 second into Nightmare frontier and I got a sinister bell ringing. It already seems like it will be a dick area because of frenzy, is there a way I can turn off people from invading right now?

I fall into the pit, kill the werewolf and then kill all the guys in the city area. I descend and kill a squid monster thing. Dead end. So I take the elevator back up to Cathedral Ward. Is there anything else down there?

The elevator takes you up to an area with a giant and a few of the white guys, right? Then go upwards towards the next boss.

Tips for the
spider?
. I dont have issues getting big damage on him but after he goes down by 50 percent the fight just becomes a random shitfest.

I'd have to go back to recall the area, but
I made a left into an alley once I hit the streets and eventually came across a gate that opened the next area up and also takes you back into the Cathedral Ward.

This game is really non-linear with tons of completely optional content, the one quarter remark could be accurate or it could be totally wrong. If you want to know there are
17
story bosses (so no chalice bosses included). Obviously getting to a boss and killing it takes a different amount of time but its a good way to know approximately how close you are to the end.
