Some bands just "get it" when it comes to covers

I think a good cover song is unique to the band, but still maintains the spirit of the original song. Lately there have been some terrible, terrible covers of songs. Well, they always happen, but for some damn reason the past few years has given us some truly epic failures. But you know who does do great covers? Pearl Jam. Yes, don't deny it GAF, these guys are masters of the cover song. They are choosy with what they'll cover, but when you see them busting out The Who, Tom Petty, or Neil Young or whoever it might be...classic stuff.

Here's them covering Baba O'Riley a few years back at a show I was at in San Diego. This. Is. Perfect.

Oh, and bonus performance of Betterman from the same show.

It seems to me that the grunge bands were some of the best at doing covers, but really Pearl Jam was king among them.

Soundgarden used to do several Sabbath covers that were fantastic. Dunno if they are easy to find online.

Turn the Page cover is awesome!

It is actually.

Also, I'd say Orgy's "Blue Monday" is a case of the cover being better than the original (whatever happened to them?) and Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal", while not better than the original, is the perfect way to do a fun/silly cover of something.

Polysics covering My Sharona, it's great because they've taken the song and worked with it to give it their signaure sound.

Last Caress covered by Metallica is also really good.

Yep, most of the covers on that album are amazing. I even prefer a number of them to their originals.

Damn right, I was kind of upset about Guitar Hero Metallica. A lot of the Garage Inc songs are on there, but its the original songs, and most of them lack balls that was given to the songs by Metallica's covers.

Stone Cold Crazy, So What, Blitzkrieg, Breadfan, Helpless, etc are so much more badass in the Metallica versions.

Easy Star All-Stars do some great covers of entire albums; they've covered Dark Side of The Moon, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and OK Computer. Check them out.

Gimme the CCR version, any day.

42 posts and no mention of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes? I'll be the first to admit that they butcher a lot of songs, but I think that's their appeal. I love that Me First takes a song and totally makes it their own. I suppose it doesn't hurt that the entire bad is a giant joke and only started so it's members could drink free beer at a club.

Their live album, Ruin Johnny's Bar Mitzvah, is fantastic as they are trying their hardest to ruin the celebration by out-right butchering the songs they play. The 13 year old kids in the crowd are eating it up but though you can't hear them you can tell the adults are rolling their eyes the whole time.

Yeah, Children of Bodom's cover of The Final Countdown is the best ever.

;)
You know they didn't do that. It was some other band (Norther maybe?) Or was that what the wink was for.

Cake's covers of "I Will Survive" and "Creep" are faaaaaaaantastic. Especially "I Will Survive".

And the greatest cover of all time is easily that screamo cover of "Crank That" by I Set My Friends On Fire. It's ridiculously fascinating.
