Witcher 3: Official Gameplay Trailer

They're better than Dragon Age and previous Witcher games at least.

Agreed

When you're talking about as many hours of cutscenes and dialogues tw3 has it isn't really reasonable to expect something like uncharted/(Insert linear game here)

I didn't say I was expecting it in this game. I'm just saying the tech isn't there yet to pull it off at this scale. May be in 3 or 5 years. Ergo, it has a long way to go

Oh the tech is most definitely there, it's just the cost and amount of work involved that's the issue.

I think that's kind of also the tech not being there.

If the tech was "there", I'd simply expect the narrative designer to specify "gruffly angry" or "moderately amused" and the engine transalting this to the correct facial expressions and body language :P

Ah yes If only it was that easy. :P I assume it's not too far off, they seem to motion capture a ton of simple reactions, and then put them into conversations based on the context. Witcher 2 had this one where Geralt would throw his hands up turn around with his hands on his hips and come back into place. Will always remember that one.

Speaking my mind! :)

I'm sure this is being done to some extent already. It just seems like that "library" of combinations needs to grow wider and more nuanced. We'll get there eventually, me thinks.

I believe video games in general are still a ways off with regards to lifelike facial animations. We've come a considerably long way over the last decade, but I think we're still about another decade away from actually GETTING there.

So, I suspect by the time PS5 and Xbox Two get here, we will have achieved enough for that level of facial expressions to become the norm across the board.

Yup. Even if you take games like the last of us, their cutscene animations are way more nuanced than in-game. Their lips and gestures are rarely ever in sync during in game dialog. Charcters still shrug, twist and spasm arbitrarily while delivering dialog and it throws them right back into uncanny valley. Given my background in amateur theater, I find this pretty important for immersion. It annoys me when I see random body language that is at odds with the words being said. The order 1886 avoided this for the most part by keeping most of the dialog serious and low key. Even their attempt at humor was deadpan, so it rarely stuck out

Since uncharted 4 is doing everything in realtime, I expect to see a huge leap forward. Quantum break seems to be getting there too. Eventually all that hand animated stuff will turn into easy and reusable templates that can work for a big open world game with a huge number of characters and body types. But yeah, we are a loooong way from that.

Also, lol @ xbox two :D

Loved W2, was gonna get W3 for sure sometime. But now I think it's a day 1 purchase. Sick trailer. PC or PS4, that is the question, I'd say I'm lookin at 30fps either way.

Nah, The Witcher 2's combat for me is vastly better than in the Elder Scrolls games.

It feels like some people are trying to rewrite history and sell this idea that the Witcher 2's combat is terrible. You're of course free to think that for yourself, but you need to recognize many of us enjoyed it quite a lot. Go back and read the reviews...sure there were some complaints about certain aspects, but the combat was generally praised and we'll received.

Until patch 1.35 The Witcher 2's combat was amazing,

That was the way I used to fight:

A bit less polished but more physical Arkham game.
Swordplay was neat and and crowd control exhilarating. The approach and level of satisfaction were kind of 'martial'.

2.0 and XBox 360 version were garbage: they removed alot of collsions, grip and tightness.

Agreed.

Witcher 2 combat features the most waggling sword combat I've seen since the old Wizards and Warriors days.

This is how you know which plebs only played the games and didn't read the books.

Or, you know, different opinions.

Head over to the official forums and you'll still see a fair few people who've read the books yet prefer Triss.

I myself, even if slightly bias towards Yen, am still waiting for the game and see how it represents both characters. Lots has gone down in the 5 year gap between the end of the novels and TW3, not to mention with Ciri coming back, I'm just going to follow my gut and try my best to not let book bias get in the way of my choice.

Maybe the video but that looks poor, if that's the PCversion the console versions must look like shit.

So...I'm a newcomer to this series, should I start with this game or do the series chronologically?
I bought Witcher 2 when it was released on 360 and that was how I got into the series.

Witcher 3 is supposedly newcomer-friendly, but if I were you I would play at least the second game beforehand. (Though, you can always just spoil the events on YouTube/Wiki but that wouldn't be quite as effective as actually playing through the games.)

Ubisoft did a few of these sorts of narrated trailers for Far Cry 2 a couple years earlier

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOSWtu4qIhg

I remember the map editor one was what fully sold me on the game.

Never realized Ubisoft was doing it first. Those are some great ones. I had only caught Rockstar's and assumed they had started the trend.

One graphical thing I've noticed at times is that peoples' skin under the armpit has some weird tiling going on:

On the other hand, this is the level of minor npc characters? Damn!

Y'all are nuts calling this the best looking open world game. That lighting and coloring is harsh.

Thankfully, there's still some incredible scope and things look better in general around the world.

Really want to get this on PC as I don't have a PS4 or X1. How do you guys think I'll be able to run it?

Core i5 2500K 3.3
AMD HD7850
8GB
Windows 7 64 bit

Worried about my video card as it's below minimum specs.

The 7850 is definitely weaker than the min-spec 7870, but that doesn't mean you're completely SOL. You may have to run it at XBOne levels though (900p/medium settings). If you're worried about it though, let someone else take the plunge first, unless you're planning on upgrading soon anyway.

So I saw that this trailer uses footage from the sword of detiny trailer (which had Hairworks and ultra settings on).

This scene shows off what Hairworks will look like on Geralt (individual strands):

And this scene shows off what the Bokeh on Ultra will most likely look like (notice the shape):

Otherwise High, what this trailer is basically made up of / console quality, seems to have a normal Gaussian DOF and bog-standard physicalized hair fins:

And if Ultra does not have these obvious settings (those individual hairstrands or the bokeh), then we can definitely say the game has be "downgraded."

According to the developers they didn't even show Ultra settings yet.

It’s not even on the highest settings, we’re saving this for when you buy the game – we want you to get a bit of a slap across the face, that’s when you see the highest.
