Witcher 3: Official Gameplay Trailer

Tempting but with only 1 to 2 hours play time a day it will take me forever and my backlog will get bigger.

I'll do this the way I do things like Skyrim and DA:I, with all the markers on so that I can easily switch between heading straight for important goals and deliberately avoiding the next story/main quest area and exploring.

True, in DA:I i played on Nightmare but at half way threw it the game was not challenging and after 87 hours i got bored and finished it i hope that The Witcher will indeed be a challenge on the highest difficulty all the way till the end.

Exactly. In that one, admittedly sparse scene, I see a fucking whale (can I interact with it? can I swim beside it?), a monster casting shadow on my sail (is it a threat while I sail? how can I combat it?), a calm water surface (what is underneath if I dive?), and a silouetted lighthouse on the horizon (who lives there? what story is there to be told?).

And that's what I'm loving about this game so far, and why I'm interested.

There is also another ship just at the edge of the frame and I'm curious whether you'll be able to take out other ships and rob them of their cargo. Or maybe you'll see other ships being attacked by monsters and shipwrecked, letting you go dive after their goodies.

Endless possibilities is why RPGs have always been my favourite genre.

If memory serves, CDPR said in the past that the whales and such are just window dressing and can't be interacted with, so I assume the same is true of other boats/ships.

That's somewhat disappointing if true, though I can understand why that would be the case. The game is already massive and seemingly filled to the brim with content.

The "downgrade" arguments have always been a bit of a crock of shit due to what I believe to be a huge misunderstanding of how trailers are put together. That is to say they're cherry picked glorious scenes to fuck each and every time and more or less every open world game in existence fails to maintain perfect quality standard all across the map. The swords of destiny trailer that blew everyone away was a sequence of very short, visually impressive scenes cut together to make for an extremely impressive sequence hard to comb over for flaws like you would a long string of a unbroken gameplay. It was also probably rendered at maximum settings and supersampled, as a lot of trailers are, for the most impressive IQ (which is kinda bullshit but hardly unusual).

The only legit "downgrade" CDPR have admitted to is interior destruction, something they talked about (and showcased, if privately to press) in the earliest builds (the cave troll going way back), and was scrapped due to a combination of rendering costs and difficulty with AI pathfinding.

I don't necessarily believe nothing else has been "downgraded", but if anything has been I suspect it's a handful of variables related to rendering complexity. EG complexity of Nvidia hair rendering (both physics and response to lighting/shading) tuned down a few notches, and perhaps its abundance and distribution, due to inevitably extreme processing costs. Possibly LOD draw distance on foliage and pop-in. And maybe, maybe the water rendering complexity. But that last one is impossible to judge until we see the same scene in-game, which we haven't since the trailer.

People are just imaginably shitty at spotting flaws when they've already decided something looks incredible in contrast to a perceived downgrade. Almost if not every open scenery shot in the Sword of Destiny trailer has low quality trees in the distance, exactly the same as recent footage. People just didn't give a fuck then despite giving a fuck now.

EDIT: I mean, look at this shit. Any one of these stills would not be out of place in the most impressive previous trailers. The colours, composition, and scene density is just gorgeous. And if the objective is to make an open world fantasy game with scenery that makes you think "I need to go explore that" I think they've knocked it out of the park.

Preach. The art direction has changed since the early builds, but it looks much more natural now then it did in the past.

Well it's not like I can imagine Geralt robbing other ships or hunting whales.

This is the first game ever where I've double dipped on the pre-order. (PC + PS4)

I regret nothing.

The Witcher 3 The Wild Hunt will make only the second new game ever, I pre ordered the Collector's Edition, the Collector's Edition strategy guide, and the season pass, in full before even playing a second of it. The other game was The Last of Us.

Looks like my cupa tea, but I still think the Character models look poor, They could be better and I'm not sure about the medieval Old Snake either
What is the said performance of this on consoles?

Poor? I couldn't disagree more. I think they look amazing. Even the NPCs have an impressive amount of detail. Im having trouble thinking of another RPG that even comes close.

@erawsd
Tell me about it. The character models are one of the standout features. They are so much better than what we typically get in open-world RPGs and can, as several previewers pointed out, compete with the character models of some of the best looking linear games.

I think if people are going to try to downplay something they need to at least be a little realistic about it. You wouldn't go into a thread about The Last of Us and claim the character models are terrible, for example, and expect to be taken seriously.

I saw your post and thought "it can't be that bad". YES IT IS.

Hopefully that was an "IGN first and last."

There wasn't much value in that video when muted though, either. I guess it's nice to have a pure combat video, but it didn't do anything for me. I'm not getting this game for the combat. I'm already assuming it's going to be serviceable at best. Seems like there's no weight to it at all. Too much Shadow of Mordor and not enough Dark Souls.

Yeah they need to stop using terrible PS2-era models

I resisted a lot of next/current gen games, but I think I'm going to muse over whether I'm getting a new PC or an Xbox One before May 19th.
Game looks amazing. Love how they went open world with this.

Yeah, my plan as well. I just hope the game offers enough balance in compass guidance with direct landmarks turned off and quest information/obtaining and intriguing points of interest you can stumble upon freely to work with minimal map info. I don't at all mine compasses for objectives and all that shit, I just hate when the stuff that is best left to be discovered ends up plastered all over the world map. To me it's absurdly detrimental to the entire design philosophy of games like this, and ironically goes against what open world games can potentially do best.

I want my Wild Hunt world to be something mysterious and explorable. Hopefully there's an option that allows map markers to be turned on at point of discovery rather than before. If I find a cool landmark or super monster, lock it on my map, I don't mind. Just don't tell me beforehand :).

On the plus side even those playing with points of interest markers turned on, at least they're question marks. You won't actually know what kind of point of interest is ahead of you; monster, bandits, dungeon, cave, ruin, etc. There's still a great sense of mystery there.

I can't remember where, but I remember a story on the game saying quest descriptions will indeed be written so you can find your way without map markers.

Aaaaah fuck off with the constant Dark Souls comparisons, no offense :)
Seriously though, Geralt is supposed to be quick constantly moving motherfucker, the combat looks exactly how it should look based on books. Not every game needs to be DS. Not to mention that playing it is going to feel different too than just watching it. Just give it a chance.

I just use Dark Souls to get across what I want from the FEEL of a combat system. I don't want the combat to be slow, but some weight behind it would be nice. That's all.

It looks very much like the combat from The Witcher 2. Right down to the rolling and weight of the sword swings. I played the hell out of The Witcher 2 and I'm sure this game will be no different. And if I go in with low expectations and the game surprises me, so much the better.

I have to wonder if they're not showing console stuff much because it's obvious they've partnered with Microsoft and Xbox One for marketing. I doubt MS wants them throwing around videos that prove it's actually the worst way to play Witcher 3...

Yeah, if we just went by how the Souls games 'look' in videos they actually appear to be quite slow and clunky.

If nobody had played a Souls game before and some random developer made a trailer for their upcoming new action RPG and it looked like the Souls games I don't think many people would pay it much attention. It's all about how the character move set interacts with the movements and attack patterns of the enemies and how that combat system interplays with the progression system and overall design. And to really understand that you have to play it.

Haven't CDPR showcased X1 version few times already? It's PS4 footage that is MIA.
