Runs great maxed out for me, but sometimes it'll randomly tab out in the middle of something, and it doesn't always start in full screen. I can deal with the full screen startup issue, but the tab out issue is annoying as hell.
Anyone have any ideas?
I run a GTX970, an i5-4960k, 16gb of RAM, and it's installed on an SSD.
I'm going to guess it's some other program on your computer. I've had several different games seemingly minimize by themselves and found out it was some totally unrelated program in the background trying to do an update. As soon as it happens the next time, note the time and check your event viewer and see if something else is doing something during that exact same moment. I forget what was causing my issue with other games like Battlefield and Dark Souls but I found it through this method and eventually was able to remove the software that was causing it.
Played the original one on 360, now trying out the PC version.
I've been playing it from my HDD, i5 3570k (stock... at least for now), GTX 970 (Gigabyte G1 Gaming stock), 8 GB DDR3 RAM.
Settings are maxed out BUT: no MSAA, no TXAA, no Advanced Graphics options.
The framerate is pretty smooth at 60 fps, but I gotta admit I'm experiencing some dips in the mid 50s and mid 40s sometimes. Really annoying, because the framerate then comes back to 60 fps. I guess I gotta tune down something.
I'm hearing on reddit that closing the rockstar social launcher after opening the game will improve performance immensely. Apparantly its running at 1200fps and gobbles up all the cpu usage it can muster.
Unfortunately, closing the launcher might crash the game after 20mins though reports vary.

I did that and yeah, it does. The launcher fucks with your CPU like crazy. No crashes until about an hour after I start the game up, but the error seems to be with FPS overlays. I'm about to start it back up without one so we'll see.
gpu usage is never as high as 99% even when gpu limited. didnt test unplayable settings tho. the fps drops/gpu usage drops when driving are not matched by any of the threads going above the normal 50 to 75% range they tend to hover in. so its either a system bandwidth limitation or an issue with the game engine. does anybody with an overclocked ddr 4 system have a completely frame drop/frametime variance free experience when driving?
there were fleeting instances where any one of the threads might hit the low 80s, but its rare and its not limited to any particular thread. the game is very well threaded according to afterburner OSD metrics. its also worth noting how much lower than 50+ fps these drops feel. its extremely jarring. more so in this game than almost any other.
Seems like a throttling issue. Maybe check your NVCP (if you're on NV card) and see if you're running threaded optimisation and power management is set to performance (?) -- can't remember the exact setting, but it should be set to maximum performance instead of power-saving mode.
A screenshot, for comparison, with afterburner OSD (98% utilisation):

So I did lower some settings (I went from everything maxed out to: Shadow Quality High, Reflection Quality High, Water/Particles/Grass High, Post FX High) and I'm still getting those dips, then going back to 80 FPS or so. So I decided to max out everything again, since I saw no benefit in lowering those settings. RAM and VRAM usage are just fine though.
No custom radio, still running from HDD. I guess I'll try to run it from my SSD tomorrow, since it's really late in Europe lol.

the screen i posted was specifically to show the utilization %s during the drops i get while driving. otherwise gpu usage is usually between 90 and 95% w/ vsync disengaged. nothing in my system is throttling. changing from adaptive to maximum in nv cpl has no effect.
Speaking of the in game memory bar, as I mentioned in my first post I'm sitting at ~2300MB out of 2048MB according to it after I upped my Textures from Normal to Very High and I haven't had a single stutter and I've been to the country side, even while doing flying missions.
By the way, when it comes to the "Ignore suggested limits" option, why is it awkwardly worded, is being "on" makes the settings unlocked or is that when it's "off" ?
Okay I think I've sort of fixed my texture pop in issue as well as the constant stuttering.
If you turn off the user radio, and turn off auto scanning of user tracks, it should help. I tried playing self fm and I'd start to get teh constant hitching and pausing as well as texture missing from the map while driving. I'd turn the radio off and then everything would be perfectly fine framerate wise and the map loaded up properly in real time.
The game runs pretty decent on a dual core CPU(I have the Pentium G3258 and a R9 280).
I get about 40fps avg up to 60fps in less graphically intensive parts(like the intro scene for example.) This on with a mix of high/very high settings.

Interesting. If you're on DDR4, the X99 platform CPU should be powerful enough. At least for me, my overclock is high enough that I don't think CPU limitation is going to be an issue (i7-5930K @ 4.4 Ghz).
Having said that, I do have some microstutters from time to time when driving out in the countryside, but I reckon that was more of an issue of SLI setup.

Trevor bombs theLost's trailer park sneaky mission.
It crashed like 3 times and i never figured out what was causing it. I just shut the PC off for a while and tried it again later, doing it all "quick-like" because I was thinking "man, I'm getting sick of this" and it worked that time.
other than that problem, I've been getting locked 60fps like...70 percent of the time, I guess? most of the rest is flickering between 57-60fps and very...very rarely it'll drop below mid 50s to the 40s
shawties
I'm running a 2500K @4.5 and 2 970s @ 1468. The game's not incorrectly doubling my VRAM like it's doing with that other guy.
other than maxed settings I have anti-aliasing disabled (all of it), shadow, reflection, water, particles and grass on high, post fx on very high (down from ultra), and high resolution shadows off with extended distance scaling 2 ticks down and extended shadows distance disabled since shadows are only on high.
Overall I'm pretty happy with the performance I'm getting with GTAV, even though I kinda wished I was able to plow through on max even with higher resolutions like i could with Ground Zeroes with just one card. I guess I should try setting the priority to high in task manager, but I'm not expecting much.
edit:i forgot about this line. I wonder if I found it as funny when I first played this game. It made me guffaw this time, though
late edith! it turns out I had SLI disabled for some reason. I'm not sure why and I don't know for how long.
I've switched my settings to what I think is similar what other people posted. Max everything in Graphics and everything in Advanced Graphics disabled with 4X MSAA and reflection MSAA off. I left TXAA off because I'm not sure if it interferes with the MFAA setting in the Nvidia Control panel. Now I get a pretty much locked 60 @1080p, with it every now and then dropping into the high 50s but I can't really notice them, just see the frame rate counter flicker and they happen very infrequently.

When i'm driving sometimes there are no roads, no buildings. Or textures are blurry, low detailed. It's like it takes too long to load the right high res textures.
I moved the game to my SSD hoping it would solve this issue. But to no avail.
Yea this game is really inconsistent. At first i couldn't get past the second mission without it crashing. Then i was having really bad streaming issues( the textures and geometry would take really long to load in) and ctd shortly after. Then my performance is all over the place, sometimes it stutters alot and the frame rate is all over the place, then it's pretty stable then it would ctd again. And the errors are usually system is running low on memory or gta 5 has stopped working or something. I'm really getting tired of this. I'm thinking of asking rockstar for a refund,i barely have time to play this game at night, and i spend most of that time trying to solve these problems.
EDIT: Changed some shadow settings. It turns out that High Resolution Shadows don't actually turn on unless your Shadow Quality is already on Very High. I bumped up Soft Shadows to Softer to mask some of the pixelation of the shadows on High. This still results in a locked 1080p60 in the benchmark.
---------------------------------
Skimmed through the thread and didn't see this mentioned but the benchmark tool works fine IF YOU BEAT THE PROLOGUE and then be sure to have story mode loaded before loading the benchmark tool. The problem seems to be that story mode loads automatically from the start screen where you are probably going through the graphic options such that it ends up loading the benchmark with story mode running behind it (thus the interesting "failed mission" during the bench since the prologue is running).
Having now extensively used the benchmark tool to reach a constant, unwavering 1080p60 fps, here are my specs and settings.
FXAA on
MSAA off
Vsync on
Pause Game On Focus Loss On
Population Density max
Population Variety max
Distance Scaling max
Texture Quality very high
Shader Quality very high Shadow Quality high
Reflection Quality very high
Reflection MSAA off
Water Quality very high
Particles Quality very high
Grass Quality very high Soft Shadows softer
Post FX very high
Motion Blur Strength min
In-Game Depth of Field Effects on
Anisotropic Filtering x16
Ambient Occlusion high
Tesselation very high
Long shadows off High Resolution Shadows off
High Detail Streaming While Flying on Extended Distance Scaling min Extended Shadows Distance min
VRAM Predicted Usage 2389 MB
RAM Usage 5-5.5 GB
I have bolded what I found to absolutely crush framerate at times (as in 60 fps suddenly dropping to ~30), most of which are related to shadows. The extended distance scaling also has a huge impact on framerate. I think that these settings were CPU-limited since Afterburner would often, at those fluctuating times, have my GPU usage at only 60-70% but CPU at 90%+. Shadow details, specifically resolution, killing framerate while not maxing GPU usage might be a GPU bandwidth limitation.
With the above settings, the game is running locked at 60 fps while looking amazing.
Thank you so much! I have a heavily OC'ed i7 4790k as well as a heavily OC'ed GTX 980. 1TB SSD and 16GB of RAM. I used your settings but added 4x MSAA, enabled Long Shadows, maxed out Extended Shadows Distance, and move Extended Distance Scaling up 2-3 notches from min and I'm running at a locked 60FPS all over the map. City, country, you name it. Gorgeous game.

It's very possible one or several of your files got corrupted during download. Rockstar's Downloader is a big pile of ass that doesn't verify the file integrity (or if it does, it does a terrible job at it). The process is a little arduous, but hopefully it should solve any missing texture or file issues causing you problems.
If any of the files MD5 "hashes" doesn't match up, move it out of the directory (don't delete it just yet), and the Rockstar Launcher should force download the file again. Hopefully correctly this time. If everything works and the missing textures goes away, then you can delete those previously moved corrupted files.
As before, everything maxed out but:
- no smaa
- no txaa
- shadows high
- no advanced settings
If I play it from my SSD, the game will run just smooth. No dips, no stutters.
Then, if I play from my non-Windows HDD, dips and stutters appear again. And I never changed my pagefile's size for any of my HDDs...
Streaming issues maybe? Again, my RAM and VRAM usage stats are just fine (5100 RAM used, 3050 VRAM used, CPU usage at 80-95%).
Stock i5-3570k, stock Gigabyte 970, 8 GB DDR3.
Let's everyone buy a SSD for this game! Btw, they had streaming issues on the Xbox 360 if you recall...

I did this for the Steam version and x64b.rpf was different. Removed it, verified cache and Steam redownloaded the old x64b.rpf. I wonder if I get the RSC version, it would fix my crashes.
What is your shadow setting at? At High or lower I've noticed some weird rendering, like it only renders some stuff if you're really close. Turning it to VH fixed it.
Also your GIF is either huge and/or terrible. Reminding me of days when Chrome couldn't handle gifs. Might be better if you made a youtube video or something. It looked like what I had but I can't be sure because it's taking forever.

While that seems odd, there might be a legitimate reason why that repository is a different size/hash. That said, it's worth a shot, though Steam DOES have file verification, so it may trip on that Rockstar-sourced x64b file when you try to run the game or if it updates. Just keep the old file around just in case something breaks.
Is anybody getting crashes during Michael missions, specifically "Daddy's Little Girl"? I didn't have any crashes up until this point, and now it's done it twice.
Does your game run smoothly at the beginnning? I experience similar issues. Runs incredibly smooth for about 10 mins (driving around, anything) then I will start experiencing drops.
Getting random ass stuttering, only while driving. Updating to amd beta drivers right now, it runs pretty good everything on high im getting 50 to 60fps but these stutters are ruining it for me.
Interesting, that might be my problem. Your overclock is stable in every other game I assume? I've never had a game crash with the overclock I've settled on. :/
Were you able to reenable your OC after the intro and be fine?
So for those of you with lower end cards, specifically I've got a GTX570 but I think a 660 would be similar, how much are your frames dropping when you're out in the countryside? I've heard 660s are playing mostly on high settings with extras turned off and getting 30 fps in the urban areas at 1080p but does it drop below that in the desert areas?
