Omg, I got invaded in Nightmare of Mensis and I managed to kill the invader.

This is the first time I win a duel.

I... I feel so proud of myself ;_;

He's actually not that bad once you get his "tells" down. If he does a small shake of his head he's going to charge, so get out of his way. If he rears up to bite you, roll diagonally through and under the move then punish him.

The main trick I found is that you need to be very aware of your positioning, as I had a terrible time to begin with as I was using a closed saw cleaver which tended to carry me in towards him after swinging a couple of blows, leaving me open to get side-swiped as he jumped forwards. Get away and to his rear before he retaliates or catches you.

When he goes ballistic towards the end, consider just keeping your distance and constantly strafing around him while hitting him with ranged attacks -ideally cannon buffed with bone powder- as if you do that, he simply cannot hit you.

All the defiled bosses are similar in that the key to victory is staying sharp and avoiding situations where they can one-shot you with a strong attack. They aren't that hard to kill, provided you get comfortable with nullifying their killer moves.
 
Is it worth going through the Chalice Dungeons? I just finished the three layers of the first one and found it dreadfully boring. Predictably, the randomly generated dungeons don't come close to FromSoft's hand-crafted regular levels.

I'd say it is just so you can get your ass royally handed to you a few chalices in.

First two are pretty rote and boring past that I think they are great and the bosses are awesome

The story dungeons are set and always the same, and they do contain some lore in them. The "Root" chalices are generated and have some variety to them, and the harder ones are pretty fun challenge. Plus you can get some different weapons (they have different gem sockets, but same base stats).

So if either of those sound interesting, then yes.

Really, there's new variations of weapons down there (if only small deviations)? Didn't know that.

I'm taking a break from my skill/arcane character in favor of something else. Is it worth it to put points into bloodtinge for those weapons (Chik/Claws/guns) or is pure strength the way to go? Also what is considered to be the best str weapon?

Starter yestarday. Love it. At father g now. Got killed 5 Times now. Need a break. This game isnt making my quitting smoking easier. :-(

Hit and run tactic for me, I didn't even bother locking on, I have much finer control of my dodges and wider-sweeping attacks via dash-attacks.

Can anyone take a second and explain bloodstone gem modifications and the chalices?

I just killed my 5th boss
the 2x witches fight

Can I made modifications to my weapons and undo them later with other gems or what?

Also, I got a chalice from a boss but I have no idea how to really use them.

I'm low 40's, can I start doing chalices or is it for later?
 
Damn it, I missed Oedon Writhe #2, I'm gonna need to start new game plus to get +6 bullet on every visceral attack.

Did anybody find #2 in any of the chalice dungeons? (The one that gives you 2 bullets).

Yes you can switch out gems whenever you want. You need the Blood Gem Tool which you should have by now.

Start the dungeons at your leisure, though keep in mind that later bosses will drop chalices you need for later dungeons. And you need to beat each dungeon to progress, as they each contain materials needed to perform the ritual.
 
Lol I basically have 3 open areas that absolutely kick my ass, Amygdala, Unseen Village, and Cainhesrt, I'll probably just keep alternating between them to see if I can make any head way at all.
 
I finished the game, but just realized that there is one door that I did not manage to open. When you exist cathedral ward to the left and then go left again past the huge enemy with the axe, there is what appears to be a locked door at the end of the path (past another huge enemy with a morning star, I think). The door is in a room full of breakable pots.

Shortcut to/from the cleric beast that's impossible to open far as we know

Indeed it is. Still feel so weird about it being called Blade of Mercy instead of Blades of Mercy. I guess it is one blade that becomes two, after all, but still...

When I got the Blade of Mercy, NPC Hunters no longer were a problem. They don't know how to deal with that, haha.

Thanks, I've been consistently getting him down to his second phase but then it gets much harder to close in on him.
 
I killed all bosses from story/optional, just the final boss and chalice dungeons left.

was the hardest so far, I haven't seen

in my whole playthrough. Not even near the
cathedral, after killing Rom

I also got
all 4 cords, even when the hunter in the hospital got hostile
 
So I just saw a couple of spiders killing a beast in a Chalice Dungeon.
Basically I was fighting against the beast, and then I aggroed the spiders, so I ran back because I was going to get fucked. Then the spiders and the beast started fighting :/ That saved my ass, btw.

and I agree with others that it has the best setting in the game.
