GTA V PC Performance Thread

It could just be a placebo but the game seemed to be running super well after launching it using this batch file:

Code:
start steam://rungameid/271590
timeout 60
wmic process where name="GTA5.exe" CALL setpriority "high priority"
wmic process where name="gtavlauncher.exe" CALL setpriority "idle"
wmic process where name="subprocess.exe" CALL setpriority "idle"

... Until I had a GPU driver crash after less than an hour of play :( GTA please, I just want to enjoy you.

A good tip for those who don't know, the 'quick save' in your characters' phones is literally a quick save. I had assumed it would be weird and warp you back to the nearest bed once you reloaded but it actually works properly. It'll save your exact position and vehicle when you're free roaming so you can use it to set up stunts or to stop playing at any time.

Of course in my case it didn't help since my crash was during a mission, but it's still good to know. I'm not sure if other GTA games have had a quicksave before.

GPU driver crash can be because of unstable OC. If you do OC, try lowering it. Even if it's factory OC.

I use around 1990-2010 MBs out of 2048 my card has, according to what the in-game slider says, if that's what you are asking. I don't have a benchmark tool to test while gaming.

Do you get stutter (skipped frame/frames) or pauses (frame freezing but not skipping)?
Use MSI afterburner to monitor your CPU and VRAM usage.

I get small stutters while driving (and sometimes running). I guess they are pauses of half a second or so.

Actually formatted my hard drive for the first time since 2013 to see if my performance is improved in this game.

Really should have sprung for a SSD... but I still might do that here soon. I don't mind installing WIndows.... again. And downloading GTA5.... 3 times in 1 month. It is nice having no cap on my downloads.

For me, CTD'd during first heist, CTD'd during Trevor going to LS, and CTD'd immediately after switching from Trevor to Michael. These are CTDs that I can replicate.

I am about 10 hours late but it sounds like you've had as many crashing to desktop issues with GTA V as I have had with MK X (and this is still happening a few days after the game has launched and I have downloaded everything + started the story).

I have only had one crash to desktop in GTA V, a few disconnections in GTA Online (as well as the system thinking it was my first time playing and tried to make me start a new player DESPITE previously using my level 8 character).

I think it can be a bit deceiving though, I have noticed a few times where I would resume from a quick save and some time has skipped. For example the most recent time this happened - I had finished
A few Trevor missions and he discovered Michael was alive, thus he was returning to the mainland as it were. I loaded the save after playing some GTA:O and the game skipped ahead to a cut scene with both Michael and Trevor.
.

Not that this matters I have also had bizarre instances where I would be in a taxi with Michael, quick save, leave the game, return to it and Michael is driving the taxi in the same spot Franklin was. Do a few things, save a few more times. When I loaded the game up again later on, Franklin was back in the spot I had him in hours before hand (same taxi with the same damage, same hill etc - it's like going back to the future haha).

By the way if anyone is having major texture pop-in issues, remove your custom music if you have any. I had really bad pop-ins but after removing my music it's much much better.

If your factory OC is unstable, that is a defective card.

I don't have pauses or stuttering whatsoever.

The use is quite easy, but if you need help just say so.

But before doing downclock. Try do a clean uninstall by DDU, clean again by CCleaner, and install clean latest driver to see if it helps.

I just did a few GPU stress tests and it performed beautifully without faltering once. I will probably just go ahead and do a clean driver install anyway because I haven't done that in a while.

Thanks for the info guys.

Anyone have a batch file for killing GTALauncher through RSC?

Not worth it the game crashes more consistently for me after 15 minutes of usage when I do that. Some of you should use process lasso and restrict steamwebhelper and the launcher they hog cpu cycles at times.

Good morning everyone, trying to catch up to the thread to see if anything can be added to OP, haven't really had much time to spend with GTA sadly these last few days. :(

Geforce guide should be out today, no?

Have I missed anything important?

*edit*

Looks like a patch is due from Rockstar today, some have already downloaded an update through steam....

Some users on reddit are reporting 0 CPU usage from the launcher now, this could be good :)

After my autosave incident last night (even though there wasn't a crash any where near the time it saved) I am now rotating 3 quick saves. I would encourage others to do so in the event the game does something nasty to the autosave.
I tried the grass reduction trick.

I'll give this software a try, thanks.

guys nvidia pcss is useless never turn it on it kills framerate for no resaon

I posted some comparisons earlier in the thread showing the difference between PCSS and the other shadow options:

I took some screens of the shadow softness options, these go PCSS/Softest/Softer/Soft:

Sounds like you're just annoyed because your hardware isn't capable of using it, the more realistic shadows are clear to see in the above shot.

I've noticed in some instances that it makes certain shadows jaggier and less soft.

The AMD equivalent definitely gave me some jaggy zigzag type shadows so I am on softest as I couldn't really see the difference between softest and PCSS or whatever it is called. Those screenshots above help a lot as I haven't taken any to test for myself.

Ignorant question: how do you take screenshots when using the non-Steam version? Do I have to put it into Steam and use the overlay and will F12 therefore work?

My cup-and-string internet is taking forever to download the patch via the Rockstar launcher (19KB at the moment). A tip: If it asks you to click retry but has seemingly downloaded everything do not click retry. Exit the software and see what happens. It has a nasty habit of overwriting things and causing all the issues with files not checksum matching. Going back into the software 'fixes' the need for a retry.

Hmm can you elaborate a bit on this? People with an SLI setup were having issues with the launcher?

I'm running 2x 980's and never really noticed...
People with a intel card and a dedicated nvidia card couldn't launch the game without disabling the nvidia card and re-enabling it once the game started. At least on my end thats now fixed

No, that's not what I am saying whatsoever, I am saying that I don't mind developers future proofing as long as the settings they are future proofing are not ones that have a huge effect on the fidelity of the game.

It seems for some settings (grass for example) the fidelity gap is huge between very high and Ultra, so much so that I feel that very high could have been a bit better in terms of looks with more optimisation.

I think that under settings they should put warnings on particular ones (not suitable for 60fps on current generarion gpu's etc) and give more details about what these particular options do. (Any game that does that I consider a good port and some do)

Because when you are purchasing a card like the Titan X at the very least you expect 60fps with a game maxed out at x2 MSAA in all games surely? I mean, how do the developers even manage to get 60fps?

I mean we are talking about a $1000 £899 gpu her it's not unreasonable to expect that.

Then how are they going to future proof the game if they can't add option that make it look a lot better but are also too heavy for today's hardware?

And it's not Rockstar/the developer's responsibility to reassure people that the 1k$ they spent on a GPU was a good idea.

Oh wow, that's seems a rather odd issue, thanks for the reply :)

The thing about overclock is that you can never make sure it's 100 percent stable. Even Factory OC.

You may run synthetic stress test for days and it is still stable but some game can crash it instantly. Too many times I've seen it happen to keep count.

So yeah, try the driver first, but otherwise you probably have to lower the clock.

Browsing around different forums I've seen some people mention getting worse performance after this update, more stuttering.... hmmmm

Can't be surely just for that? 200mb? I doubt that highly.
If a patch is replacing a file instead of replacing small portions of data inside a file then it can be any size. This actually happens a lot. And it's not necessarily adding to the game size if a file is being replaced.

Still can't launch my non-Steam copy through Steam :(

Really getting annoyed that I can't use the Steam UI with the game.

So I got to the dreaded countryside, and the performance drop honestly wasnt that bad for me. Running an i5-2500k @ 4.0ghz and GTX 970 SSC, and it does dip down to maybe high 40's at the lowest in areas with dense vegetation, but otherwise its not that bad. Desert at night time also didn't do me in too badly, dropped into low 50s but not any further.

This is with all settings maxed except grass Very High, shadows Softest and no MSAA, and all advanced options on except the two sliders at 50%.

Overall between the city and country/desert I'm getting anywhere from like 48- 80 fps. With vsync on thats 48-60 which is a pretty acceptable range of fps, its not too distracting.

Switching from Raw Input to Direct for mouse control totally fixed the mouse look stuttering issues as well.

This game is absolutely gorgeous and I'm fine with these settings until we get Andy's guide.

Side note: the keyboard controls for flying are actually quite good! You can use a combo of WASD and the number pad (tenkeyless keyboards am cry), or if you switch mouse from "camera" to "vehicle" in aircraft controls you can use the mouse along with WASD. Both work great, better than the controller for me. Its actually much easier to handle planes with just the keyboard.

If you use triple buffered vsync it won't happen. Also if you OC your 6300 to 4.2 Ghz (AKA, just lock it at the Turbo boost clock) you should be able to hit 50-60 without issue on a mix of high/max settings

Referring to This post.

Legit impressed with what the 6300 can do given the price. I imagine with better cooling and an OC to 4.5 you might get the extra frames needed for a locked 60.

Granted, seeing as GTAV seems to be utilizing threads/cores rather well I suppose going 8-core won't hurt at all. Ain't like the 8350 is that expensive either.

Hey! I changed to triple buffered v-sync in Nvidia Inspector and that solved my fps issue, so thanks! I let Nvidia Game Experience choose my settings and it put them at some cazy high settings, but I'm able to keep a constant 30fps so I think I'll play the game with a controller and with the v-sync at half.

Making me nervous to hear about worse performance after the patch. I haven't experienced a single crash or stutter with this game. This is one of the best performing ports for me in quite some time. Literally not a single issue, other than the vsync sometimes bugging out but that's an easy fix.

Don't fail me now, Rockstar.

Any other 970 users experiencing what I am?

i5 3570K @ 4.2
EVGA GTX 970
8 GB 1600 Ram

Running everything on very high / ultra using only FXAA and softest shadows. Nothing on in Advanced except for streaming with both sliders at 0.

I'm getting a pretty solid 59/60 fps everywhere, even in the parts of the country and desert I've been to so far. However, I do get dips to 53 fps every once in a while, especially while driving and even more so when I get into a car crash. It will drop to exactly 53 then jump back up to 60.

Precision X is reporting my max Vram usage at 3526mhz...which is obviously beyond the 3500 "real" Vram on the 970. The game is estimating I should only be at about 2900 for usage. I'm just not sure why the actual usage is so high when I don't have anything active I would consider too intensive for my card.

I'm not complaining though...Game runs pretty damn well for me overall and obviously looks beautiful.

While alt-tabbing out from the game does your keyboard input lag behind with several seconds? While the game is paused in the background my CPU is only utilized to ~20%.
Everything related to graphics and mouse input works just as it should, but my keyboard input is experiencing severe lag. DPC latency?
I have a Corsair K70 Vengeance. If that's known to have issues like this?
Haven't had this issue with any other game.

EDIT: Apparently I'm getting a really high hard page fault resolution time. While the game is running.
I have 9.4GB available RAM while running it by the way.

New discovery:
While having my wireless 360 gamepad powered on and connected if I don't use vsync my gpu and cpu load will tank as soon as I enter the menu screen. It lags as hell I might add. If I turn on vsync the load isn't affected in the menu screen. If the gamepad isnt connected it doesn't matter if I have vsync on or off. Clearly an input conflict of sorts. Wonder how much of it is behind other types of stuttering and potential cpu load issues.

Performance is exactly the same for me, but I was getting a lovely and smooth experience anyway, so whatever the problem is people were/are having wasn't affecting me in the first place.

I have almost the same setup as you. Haven't made it to the countryside myself yet but this gives me hope. I've already turned grass down to high in preparation and I think I'm going to turn off the advanced features. I can't see them making that much of a difference compared to the cost for me. Good tip on the mouse input. I have noticed the slight stutter when strafing while mouselook. I'll try direct input next time I play.

I like your thoughts on the flying as well.

Someone else got those problems with the shadow. I changed literally every setting, but it's like having aura around you, that pops up the shadows..

I remember having a similar problem in connection with a different setting like shader or something like that. Can't give you an exact answer, though.

That's unfortunate, I'll definitely keep an eye on it and watch for any more GPU-related crashes.

What is the boost clock speed of your card out of interest?

Nvidia Inspector says 1253 MHz with 1114 MHz as the base/default clock. It's this card.

I did a clean re-install of my GPU drivers, got that patch and then played for about two hours. Everything seemed fine, then suddenly out of nowhere I get hit with the "drive-by crash." I hit RMB while in Trevor's car and the game crashed immediately, nothing in the event log says it was related to the GPU and the driver definitely didn't crash beforehand.

Rockstar need to patch this game faster :P

Very High Shadows fixed this for me. It was that ladder that got me to bump it from high and it was night and day difference.

Unfortunately it appears that it just does that. Apparently Farcry 4 had a similar thing.

I've tried tweaking everything I could find as well to no avail.
