Yikes, sorry. I meant minority on GAF, I know it reviewed and performed well. But I'm no Trek or even Star Wars superfan, so I don't follow threads around here usually is all.

Trek desperately needed the reboot though. Star Wars I think is in a better place, and I think Lucas divorced from complete control is the ideal situation, so I'm pretty confident this will turn out decent.

I tend to hear from hardcore trek fans that the new Star Trek movies felt more like Star Wars than Star Trek. Probably why they are the only Star Trek movies that I liked lol.

I may have missed it, but did we not get a teaser poster for Ep.VII (ala young Anakin/Vader shadow from Ep.1) out of Celebration?

I mean, I saw those Walmart looking ones, but I figured they'd roll out a theater poster.

From what I understand, the teaser poster is this.

This just reminded me of how terrible Jabba looked in Phantom Menace. Just... jesus... He looked like he was made of plastic. Screenshots don't do it justice. PM just doesn't hold up at all on anything that isn't a VHS.

Phantom Menace holds up better than Episode 2 does, except for the gungan battle scene.

They just need to take that scene out. It needs to stay on the cutting room floor. I mean Jabba isn't even in character as we know him in that scene.

Jabba the Hutt being just a dangerous name mentioned for the first two films, finally leading to his reveal in RotJ, is great stuff. Naturally Lucas had to change that by making him a fucking clown in ANH-SE and Episode 1.

Thanks, Bobby.
Simple, does the job, but not very exciting.
I guess I'll just look forward to the (hopefully) Struzan final poster.

He wasn't a clown in ANH-SE though. And that scene existed (as a deleted scene) with the same dialogue before they decided that Jabba wasn't human.

Why would one of the most dangerous mob bosses in the galaxy let a guy that owes him money big time him in front of his bounty hunters and walk over/step on his tail? It was dumb and diminished the whole danger of fucking with a Hutt.

Yes, that scene existed with the human and was rightly cut out completely from the original.
Jabba's design was rethought and introduced in Jedi... and, IMO, the character was much better for it.

The entirety of the exposition in the Jabba special edition scene is already present in the Greedo scene. Plus, it ruins the surprise of finally seeing the huge puppet in ROTJ. I see no positives with the scene's inclusion, even if the CG was actually good.

yep, this. one of the many additions that make people scratch their heads to this day.

the Despecialized Editions are probably the best options right now for original trilogy watching in HD.

I don't disagree with many of the points made, I too feel that the scene was unnecessary. I just don't agree that it made Jabba 'a clown'. He let Solo get away with murder, because he was the favoured son, the 'best'. That only got Solo so far though.

Yup. But I guess if Lucasfilm is going to keep the scene in there, (I wish we could get more news on what these "split the difference" cuts are doing) trying to improve the model (and hopefully getting rid of the stupid tail step) isn't a bad thing.

I remember looking for these way back when, and only saw them in the .mkv format. Do they have them in .mp4 now?

Just change these and I'd be a happy man (minus Ep V. I'm OK with the changes there):

Ep IV:
-remove the rocks in front of R2-D2 when Obi Wan first appears with Luke
-Han shoots first again
-Remove the Jabba scene with Han

Ep V:
-change the dialogue back between Vader/Emperor (though I'm OK with this change as it fits the prequels)

Ep VI:
-remove Jedi Rocks
-remove Vader's "Noooooooooo!" during the Emperor/Luke scene
-remove Hayden at the end, and replace him with the old actor again

Also ditch the blu-ray Obi Wan scream. Everytime I watch that part on youtube I have to laugh. He's like a drunken frat boy on spring break.

there are 720p versions in avi, which I'm sure you could convert pretty easily.

the 1080p versions are still mkv as far as I know. but that can also be converted easily to .mp4 with Handbrake if you need an mp4 version.

LMAO WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS

George Lucas what were you doing. This is why I don't fuck with anything outside of the VHS versions or proper fan cuts.

after seeing how Jaws was remastered, there is no excuse for not remastering the original version of the prequels. Hell 20th Century Fox should just lead the charge.

Exactly! CGI may be cheaper, but there's a time and a place for it in live action. It should be enhancing your movie. Not making up 90% of it.

Honestly I hope they 'special edition' the shit out of the prequels. Those movies REALLY need some updates. Hopefully they were created and archived in a way that makes them easy to update well.

Via the link you posted:

Picture quality: Although the PDE is 1080p and the DeEd is only 720p, the DeEd actually contains more detail due to using higher quality sources and having less compression artefacts:

The Partly De-Specializeds aren't the DeSpecializeds, and they're out-dated. You'd be recommending people get a subpar version of the fan-made restoration solely for the extra lines of resolution, which defeats the purpose of recommending the DeEd in the first place.

The despecialized editions really look quite fantastic despite using multiple sources for the footage. Right now it's the only way to watch the OT.

I wish I could hunt down a copy of these.

I'd happily pay a gaffer for their rips on Blu-Ray.

Agree.

In addition, I'd suggest they completely redo the Mos Eisley SE additions. I get what Lucas was trying to do but it looks absolutely atrocious. Also, the 'finale' shots of cities celebrating should be completely cut.

I'm still hoping for the theatrical versions of the OT to be released, but it probably won't happen. If the changes in the "split the difference" versions are good enough, I'll get that. Haven't bought any Star Wars DVDs or BDs since this one:

I picked up a MIB VHS set of the original trilogy for like $3 at a Goodwill 5 years ago. I'm convinced if I hold on to them for 40 years, they'll be worth something. I'm hoping in 40 years, college hipsters will make VHS cool again. Like, it'll be the new vinyl or something

The best/worst thing about this scene is that the pillar directly behind them inexplicably isn't casting a shadow on the walkway like every other pillar, probably because they hadn't really designed the space/lighting scheme when they shot the actors on green screen and their very prominent rim light meant they couldn't walk through a giant shadow. And instead of maybe changing the background scenery so it actually makes sense, they just decided to do the easy thing by deleting a shadow/cheating with the lighting.

No, it is. Pay attention to the difference between the second and third pillars' shadows. They are not falling at the same angle. Now add that difference to the close pillar and you'll see it's nearly parallel to the path. You can see its shadow fall ever so slightly into the path, especially on the far right.

If that's the case, then there is some major weirdness going on with the location of the sun that is casting that light/shadows in order to have such discrepancies all over the scene. They are doing some hefty cheating with the lighting. I can count about 4 different suns casting different sunbeams/light sources in the scene. I guess I don't know how many suns are orbiting Coruscant though.
