Iceman!

Glad to have you among us, Bobby.

Makes Fox's X-Men 1 & 2 seem a bit strange now.

Confirming a long-held fan theory, pages from “All-New X-Men” #40 have leaked online ahead of Wednesday’s release that reveal Iceman is gay.

I dislike that they have to "unveil" a gay character. There is always a spectacle around the reveal for marketing purposes and then the gay character is put back on the shelf while the major characters continue as normal.

That's cool.

Is All-New Jean's characteristic that she's nosey as fuck?

That panel's awkward to read. Why's it her business?

I'm reminded of this scene from X-Men 2, which Brian Singer quite obviously used (and specifically mentioned during the dvd commentary) mutant powers as a metaphor for being gay.

why cant a character just be gay or straight in a comic rather than unveil it. this sounds like announcing something for the sake of announcing and saying hey we do this too.

Apparently it's Iceman from the past who is gay, not present time Iceman.

Ok

How does that even work... is marvel commenting on the nature of homosexuality and how it may not be innate? assuming the "all-new" x-men are from the same planet just in the past? or is it another dimension or something?
"Have you tried not being a mutant?"
Yes, that feels a bit telling in the wake of this... but that doesn't explain the rogue relationship! Is he really going to put THAT much effort into a beard?

To explain, this is the young "past" version of Iceman who was brought to the present.

I mean, none of it really makes any sense but there you go.

Yeah, like a lot of people I think that society will have "made it" when companies don't feel like they can trumpet this and try and get publicity and goodwill from it.

Iceman as gay seems odd from my comics reading, but I haven't read any of the newer stuff aside from Ultimates so I dunno what "fan theory" is supported. You think they'd make some of theses characters bi given that most of them have long-established heterosexual relationships in the comics.

The ironic thing is that scene in X-Men 2 where Bobby "comes out" to his parents as a mutant - which was a pretty direct metaphor for coming out as gay.

"Have you tried...not being a mutant?"

Well, that's Bryan Singer for you. The "mutants are like homosexuals" parallel is an interesting one and worked as updating the original "other" element of the X-Men, although I think Singer's films flogged that point a bit too hard.

Ok

Reminds me of when Green Lantern was revealed to be gay in New 52, but "It's actually the old school Green Lantern Alan Scott on a parallel world and not the current one so look at how progressive we are and please don't freak out. Also, his boyfriend is now dead."

so it's the exact same iceman (same planet, etc.) just brought into the present?

yeah, I can see a lot of people in the LGBT community taking issue with the fact he is gay but the other, older iceman is not... how do they explain that?

Seems pretty forced and weird.
Agreed, but at the least, by making it an "unveiling" event it will get attention, get people talking about and addressing issues. Which is good, even if it comes from a shallow marketing thing.

Jean Grey's flawless logic "Kitty Pryde is no longer on Planet Earth" which automatically makes Bobby "Full Gay".

That page is a fucking mess.

This is a long held fan theory? Bobby has been around the X women more times than Scott has shouted JEEAAAAANNNNN

Doing this is not really a problem as young bobby is pretty much an entirely different character than old bobby. The issue I take is how it is presented with Jean outing him and them shooting down any notion of him being bi because sexuality is such a binary thing. Bendis is just too on the nose with the way he writes. I look forward to how they are going to handle this at large, probably with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

It seems that the original Ice Man is also gay, but he just hides/denies it. According to that comic strip at least.

Announcing basic character traits like this for marketing purposes is really dumb and not classy. And as said above, it's ironic to the point of being silly: not only does Marvel already have openly gay characters, the X-Men have already long functioned as a metaphor for prejudice against all sorts of minorities.

This is like, the definition of a non-interesting plot development.

There's a Crisis-style event coming- pretty sure this is intended to make no sense from a logic perspective because of that.

Ok

But then, given the context, wouldn't present day Iceman also be gay? I mean, is Bobby discovering he's gay a product of the time travel stuff? Or maybe when he gets back to his time, he gets mind wiped so present day Bobby never experiments?

I have so many questions...

EDIT: apparently, the implication is that present Bobby is closeted. Hrm...
