Marvel will unveil another gay character tomorrow

I just want to point out, DC had a perfectly competent gay character for a decent amount of time before it decided to screw with the creative behind it (Batwoman).

One of the only good things to come out of the New 52. Screw DC and Marvel.

hey alan scott was pretty good for like, an issue

as someone who dropped off of comics years ago, can someone spoiler tag why cyclops kissing x23 is so weird?

It's
Wolverine's Female Clone
. It doesn't need to be spoiler tagged, it is general knowledge, but alas I'll do as you asked.

so wait is older bobby Gay as well? or has he been confused/in the closet up to now?

Also so far four mutants. Iceman, shatterstar, rictor, and northstar have been the major reveals as male homosexuals. Am I missing somebody else from Marvel

I don't disagree with your comment on editors at all, it's completely true. Bendis just has too much pull and no one seems to care. Several issues of Guardians of the Galaxy spelled Richard Rider's name wrong and he also changed Knowhere, which is a floating celestial head in space, to a planet IIRC. No explanation or anything.

The dude has written two legendary runs for Marvel (Daredevil and Ultimate Spidey), but they really should not be afraid to jump in every now and then.

Tenured "power" for writers/artists is an awful idea because, sometimes, writers go through phases where they temporarily lose what made them good writers. Editors gotta edit, ya know?

nothing spoilery

X23 is a female wolverine clone

Cyclops and Wolverine have always had a huge rivarly.

that's pretty much it, I guess it's funny seeing them kiss while knowing their "other versions" hate each other.

Bendis just really took a fucking hatchet to the X-Men in his tenure.

A shame because Jason Aaron was taking it to wonderful places on his side, but then he "lost", and it all went Bendis, aka: fucking shit.

She detects the baller in him.

Scotts awesome, haters be damned. Can't wait for Secret Wars and that book about the thousand Summers clones.

If current Iceman is gay to, I have significantly less issues with this.

I'd be fine as long as current Iceman has a good explanation. It doesn't have to be that he's gay, it could just be current Iceman telling young Iceman that he's still not sure - that he's wondered/struggled about it for most of his life, and still doesn't know.

I dunno. It feels pretty weird for a character that has been around for 50 years suddenly be gay, but I've always liked Iceman, so I'm kinda hoping this means they start writing him into more books. I still wish they would just make new characters rather than making every gay character a surprise coming out story.

But that has nothing to do with homosexuality, I always wish they'd make more original characters and let the older dudes move on. I mean, if you read X-Men now, Cyclops has aged and grown, but Bobby, who is supposedly 4 years younger than him, is written as a teenager still.

oh. why is that so weird? I thought it was going to be his daughter from the future or something like that

He's having sex with basically a female wolverine. Are you not familiar with Wolverine/Cyclop's relationship?

They are at times friends, teammates, rivals, pursuing the same woman, and enemies.

he's not necessarily suddenly gay. they're implying he's always been gay and just in the closet.. plus he's currently in all new x-men and occasionally in uncanny xmen. he's in quite a few current books if you want to read it.

also marvel makes new characters all the time, some of which stick around and gain some traction. wolverines son daken was bisexual and he came out at some point in the 2007s.

and bobby isn't written as a teenager. he's simply a different character

Wait. What. Hold up.

Ewww. Goddamn, the war over making Cyclops awesome or a complete shitheel is ongoing in Marvel editorial. This shit doesn't even make sense. She's supposed like, 19. He's in his 40s or something. Also, Emma? I know they were rocky but goddamn.

Yes, I realize how nerdy all that is and IDGAF.

I know what they're implying, but it's still "suddenly" to us, the readers. Every character that has been made gay has the same story. It's old hat and it doesn't really work with a character with so much established back story.

Marvel does make some characters, but more often than not, they're pushed aside or killed off so the established guys can repeat stories over and over again. See for example, Daken.

616 Bobby is written as still being a teenager mentally. I understand that time displaced Bobby is a different dude. I'm commenting on how, depending on the character and the writer, some characters never seem to progress past a certain point. Bobby is perpetually the man baby. Maybe being gay will let writers do some new stuff with him. Iceman is a pretty sweet character that is woefully underused.

So time displaced iceman is gay, but the original 616 iceman isn't? So being gay is a choice?

My interpretation from the posted "Full gay" page is that 616 Bobby is in denial.

Honestly, I am cool with them having Bobby suddenly come out, if not for the following:

  • Bendis.
  • It's Bobby Drake. When people draw comparisons of long standing unpopular heels as good guys they say Iceman and/or Gambit.
  • This feels more like leg pouches, bandanas, and "Xtreme" than an earnest attempt at social commentary or making an identifiable gay character.
  • "Full Gay."

Wait. What. Hold up.

that's young cyclops.

Oh that's a younger teen Cyclops that got brought to the present.

So, weirdly enough, I kind of always thought he was, (but then I could have been projecting or whatever), so this doesn't really shock me at all.

It's not the fact that he's gay, it's just everything surrounding that fact.

I also feel like Bendis should be on that list twice.

How does that even work... is marvel commenting on the nature of homosexuality and how it may not be innate? assuming the "all-new" x-men are from the same planet just in the past? or is it another dimension or something?

You know a lot of gay people didn't *realize* (if that makes sense) they were gay until later on, right? Or people are just downright confused? My cousin, as an example, has went from straight to gay (for five years) to straight again.

It's not completely inconceivable that a once straight character can now be gay, even if he's been shown to be with woman before. I really doubt Marvel would be trying to suggest that it is a choice or anything like that. That'd be a PR nightmare.

Edit: Shit, I may have completely misunderstood your comment. Apologies if I have.

Yeah, there are a couple of things, one being that Cyclops and Wolverine have traditionally hated each other more or less. It's kind of like if there was a new Popeye cartoon where there's a female clone of Bluto... then Popeye fucks her, lol.

Beyond that, the fact that it's young, time displaced Cyclops kind of negates this, but there's a bit of perverse "principal banging the student" imagery happening here as well. Like, it's not far from "Xavier making out with Kitty" or something. And that's made even worse by the fact that Cyclops has been kind of exploitative of X-23 in the past anyway (well, around Messiah War era X-Force at least). Again, yeah, I understand this is Young Cyclops, but the imagery is still Cyclops making out with X-23.

oh wait Bendis wrote this? that explains the "full gay" dialogue..... he loves to write shit like that and pass it off as just teenager speak....

Marvel tends to treat ANY disruption of the time stream as a new universe. When/if the "All New X-Men" go back to their own era, it won't be the main Marvel timeline any more (which they call Earth 616).

Nah, they've been trying to avoid them all the time with the young X-Men here and making it clear that in this case it's different. For example, there was brief moment where young Cyclops was technically "dead" and so older Cyclops disappeared from existence before he was revived.
