Android Wear |OT| 2nd Gen is Here

I'm pretty disappointed with the app selection the store has. I know it's just a watch, but I was hoping to see some cool new uses for it.

Like what? Most of the things you may want are already apps.
The only app we need is Tamagotchi and we're good.
You know when you browse through the app store and you go "wtf I had no idea I needed this" at some random app sitting off to the side? I was hoping to get something like that after it being out for a bit. Haven't had that yet.

Of course I love my device and the apps it has on it now, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm "expecting the unexpected" from the store.

Did you see this? AutoWear: https://youtu.be/wZXy7CSrXkg

Lots of cool uses :)
Seems awesome! I'll look into it. Definitely something to tinker with through time. Anybody here use it pretty consistently?

EDIT: lol just saw who the poster was. Good work on the app man, I see great reviews.

Hopefully we'll get more apps now that the android 5.1 update brings apps more to the surface - they were very hidden before.

So I just got the Android Wear app update on my phone, but I guess there also needs to be an update on the watch before all this fancy wifi and actually being able to easily start apps stuff becomes available? Anyone know when the SmartWatch 3 is being updated?

I'm back on android myself, looking forward to the 2nd gen Moto. When is IO?

I think it's a month from now. After switching to Android the Apple Watch is a non-starter obviously, even if it wasn't I don't like how that watch looks (both hardware and software). Hopefully Google cribs some of the good features from it for the next revision of the software. I hope Samsung applies some of the brilliance they exhibited with the S6 and S6 Edge with the next watch. It would be cool to have a watch where the edges of the circular face curve way. They also have a patent on a circular dial around the face of the watch that may be used the same way as Apple's digital crown.

Been keeping an eye on Moto 360s since they released and it looks like the price has gone way down on them now. Gonna try to get one for lower than $150.

Other than some software tweaks or watch designs, both of which would be doable on the current platform, I'm not sure what people are hoping for from a V2?

Current android wear is fast enough, responsive, good battery life. New update pushes apps more to the front. Maybe they'll add a soeaker and allow you to make silly phone calls?

Let's be real bro the batteries in these watches suck hard with heavy usage. I want it to last at least 2 days,

Yep, battery for sure. I'm hoping version two of the 360 has better battery and a completely round screen. If they can do both I'm in for their next watch. I'm keeping a close eye on LG though. I really like what they're doing.

Buy a GWR then. mine lasts two days with the screen always on. Manufacturers just need to prioritise battery. One benefit of AW is you can then choose which to buy.

And these will get compared with apple watch, which talks about 18 hours use. I'm not sure android wear is going to try and push for more battery life at the expense of speed or prettiness (although personally I'd welcome it as a differentiator)

My wife just got me a GWR. Loving it so far. Android wear seems to do everything I expected of it and a few more nifty things.

There's a few things I would like to see in the second iteration:

Better battery life
Smaller size option
NFC
Speaker

That's pretty much it for me. Although it is not a feature I personally would use, but I could see a front facing camera being a big feature in the future, especially if it shows up on a future Apple Watch or Android Wear watch. Mainly for a quick selfie, or even for Facetime or Hangouts, though I think at that point, it would probably be more feasible to just use your phone. Samsung already has a few watches that feature them, but with their limited ecosystem, and lack of support of anything non-Samsung phones, means it will never catch on with the public.

Man, reading this thread title back then and now is pretty much what I should have done when jumping into smart wear technology.

I've had my G Watch since day one and have still yet to see any reason why anyone should get a "smart" watch. I was really looking forward to the fitness aspects that Wear could make use of, but there aren't many apps that take advantage.

As an early adopter I knew what I was getting into and even with the launch of the Apple Watch I've still yet to see any real reason why anyone should own a "smart" watch, but as a fan of tech I like what Apple is doing bringing attention to smart wear and can't wait to see what Google brings up at I/O.

It'll be better. Underbaked, not polished, and kind of haphazardly thrown together, but much, much better.

Wear is a solid platform, and the UI can be beautiful despite how inconsistent it is. I'm excited to see what I/O brings, particularly now that Apple has really forced them to improve. I enjoyed my Moto 360 and Zenwatch, but from both a software and hardware perspective they don't hold up very well compared to the Watch.

Doesn't the GWR also have a dormant wifi chip?

Yes,mbut there is confusion over whether it is possible to use it. Apparantly phandroid got a statement from LG that it isn't usable, but others have pointed out that LG talked about wifi when they launched it, plus it has an FCC certification for wifi which should suggest it has an antenna that can use it?

I personally don't think we're getting a significant update to wearable hardware this year, so I'm diving in now. I can get the black steel 360 for about the same price as an LG Watch R + replacement metal band, so this update has made me consider that now. Bugger.

That black bit at the bottom though.... Yeesh. And the battery life.

I'm ordering tomorrow and I have no idea which one to get now. Leaning towards the LG because of a sweet blue Milanese loop band I can buy for it which apparently doesn't fit on the 360, but it's hard. If the LG had WiFi I'd be on it now.

EDIT: or of course wait for the moto 360 2. The rumors keep pointing at the same spec as the other watches with the SD 400, but no stupid black bottom bit and of course, WiFi.

Battery is fine and the 360 will have wifi

wifi is a nice to have. Two day battery with your screen always on is a major plus.

Looks are subjective but I also think the GWR works better as a watch - the face on the 360 is too big and accentuated by lack of lugs and odd low-down attachment points for the strap. I tried both for a couple of weeks and kept the GWR.

Both need replacement straps IMO (GWR more so)

I find myself forgetting my LG G more often than I'd like to admit. The notifications are nice and I paid just 70€ on eBay for it but the App I'm using the most, RunKeeper, just isn't that useful. In addition to that it's kinda sluggish and skipping tracks can be a hassle. Especially using Deezer. I think I'll keep it for the time being but I'm kinda over Smartwatches already.

Maybe I'll try the Sony 3 or the Asus Zen Watch if I can get them for cheap.

We are a month away from IO. You've waited this long. Why not wait a little longer? I'm in the same boat.

Stop speaking sense AJ godammit.

It's true though. I don't think LG are going to update though since the Urbane is almost out but I may as well see if Moto get it together first.

Yep. Don't worry. You aren't alone. I almost bought a 360 last week until I got some sense back.

this bloody thing is constantly kicking into priority notification mode with the little star on the screen. Even if I haven't touched either phone or watch. Hopefully either 5.1.1 on the watch or 5.1 on the phone (eventually) will sort it.

how does the watch get updates anyway? Through the phone app or directly?

If you go to the settings screen and tap "about", there should be an update option. At least, that's how it worked on my previous two Android Wear watches. Obviously it downloads this data through your phone, but you technically have to update it on the watch itself.

It's an LG G Watch R with a fancier case. There's nothing we don't already know.

I still maintain the fancier part is debatable. The R is plenty fashionable, just more sportswatch and less style watch. But yeah, aside from WiFi support it should be identical in battery and performance, so there's nothing really to test there.

Wait a month and see what else gets announced. If you have a 360 or G Watch R, I'd wait at least another year before upgrading to a newer model, at that point there should be a decent uptick in battery performance and overall hardware I would imagine.

To be fair, I don't really know how the 360 battery life works out irl, might be worth an upgrade if it's not sufficient for you.

It is literally a reskin. 360 should last you a day after the updates from what I've read, no idea if it takes a hit now you can use WiFi though.

But yeah, waiting. Been looking at the Apple Watch topic and even though I think it's ugly, I think I need to wait for NFC payments to be standard in Android Wear too. Seems to be the only feature that has that Wear is missing.

The Urbane LTE actually has this with LG's own software instead of Android Wear and a few other cool features, but lol at the size.

Wifi is not a factor on the battery drain for my 360. I wear mine all day and night (for sleep tracking) with 2 x 20 minutes charging during breakfast and dinner (ambient and wrist flick activation on.)

won't you need to wait for NFC payments to be standard in android first? Isn't google pay/wallet basically not used anywhere?

In the UK I'd be better off sellotaping my NFC debit card to the back of my phone :)

Actually Barclays a year or so ago sent me a tiny duplicate of my debit card that was basically just the chip - specifically for people to stick on the backs of their phones.

Good point, I didn't realise. not really looked into Google pay for a while since I found it pointless on a phone since I have an NFC debit card too, same effort to pull it out. That's a damn shame, looks like I'll consider jumping in the second gen then even if NFC doesn't come as standard if they have even more to work out.

Welp, got myself a Sony Smartwatch 3. The store demo Moto 360 felt way too sluggish for my taste (old software version? Who knows, it sure didn't sell me on it) and the WiFi and GPS feel like nice features, if everything works and there's actual support for it that is.

It's a nice watch. Just activated the iFit 90 days premium so going to start using everything tomorrow when I've got the thing set-up. No idea what to do with the Golf app they've thrown in so if anyone wants a code for it, just say so.

Now it's time to fiddle around with it, see what it can do besides fitness tracking with the built-in GPS and being an actual watch. From my own experience so far and from the posts in this thread I shouldn't be hopeful for a lot of functionality I guess.
