Android Wear |OT| 2nd Gen is Here

I got my Sony SmartWatch 3 today. Hmm. Cool hardware but man, Android Wear is super limited. My advice to those who are soon to buy: Just buy the device based on looks. The OS is so limited that I don't think anything else, except battery life, matters. Looks and price should be your main drivers. Everything else is basically the same.

If there's cool new hardware soon, I won't hesitate to return my SW3. I hear new watches will have speakers. That would be cool for things like confirmation of voice actions. I also hope for Taptics. That's so sweet.

I agree with your advice on picking hardware but disagree that Wear is that limited. I thought so too when I first got my G Watch but after a couple of weeks I was amazed at how useful it was.

Also, Advanced Wear Visualizer is a must have app. I always turn it on in bars and clubs and it is an amazing conversation starter. Girls will be coming up to you all night asking about your watch (seriously, I know this must sound strange and nerdy but it never fails)

Nothing new at Google I/O in Android Wear. Just recapped the latest version.

Also no new Moto.

Were you guys expecting a new version? They only just released a huge update, I figured as much.

Also, would Moto announce something at a google keynote? You could still get your wish. :)

I'm not saying it's not useful. It is. But it is also limited. Apps are widgets. I like it for sure and that's why I think a circle screen can work. Style can eat into function and it's ok because the function isn't mind blowing. Yet.

Cool app recommendation.

So between the Moto 360 and the LG R (?? Probably got the name wrong but can't be bothered to google it), which is better? I know a lot about the M360 but not much about the LG one.

Also, do either have built-in NFC to use with Android Pay when that's released?

Moto 360 doesn't have NFC. I'm not sure about the LG.

With the 360 being $149 right now, it's hard to overlook. Seems to be in short supply in store though. No Bestbuy in my area has it in stock. Is itt secretly discontinued?

Between the two, I'd just go with what you think is aesthetically better at the price you're comfortable with. Functionality wise, they're largely the same and the main difference between the two is that the G Watch R has about another day worth of battery life over the 360 which makes ambient mode an option (you can use ambient mode on a 360, but you probably won't make it through the whole day). The catch of course is that the G Watch R is about $100+ more than the 360 and I don't personally find ambient mode all that useful. So besides aesthetics, it's a cost analysis about how much you want to pay for more battery life.

Neither have NFC btw.

M preview on my Nexus 6 seems to break Android Wear. Anyone else?

Was hoping for a Moto 360 2 reveal at I/O but there's more today, right? There might be hope! With all the discounts and leaks we can't be that far away. I really like the design of the 360 so I'm hoping the successor will be building on the initial concept. Lose the bezel at the bottom, make it a little less bulky and improve the battery life. Hopefully they can pull it off.

LG G Watch is on Woot today for $80. I think I'll hop on this one and, if I like the Android Wear experience, get a second gen Android watch.

Also, I'm surprised there isn't a windows application for notifications in place of a phone or tablet.

I'd get that if it had wifi. But it doesn't :(

That doesn't preclude manufacturers releasing devices whenever they want. The update was fine as far as I'm concerned: more and more watch models are out there, software's being updated regularly, etc.

All good. Except for Motorola fucking about with its 360 5.1.1 update.

Yeah, I don't understand that. When it was announced, it was announced like "If you've not got a Sony or Moto 360 watch, you'll need a new one for WiFi.". Now Moto has fucked about, LG Watch R might get a surprise WiFi update before the 360 gets the software and the Watch R is already on 5.1.1.

Yeah, I got one, too. I bet it'll ship. They did something similar before.

Using time travel, I have Bboy AJ pictured in the latter half of 2016

First announced watch, last to release of the Gen 1's, and last to update, it just doesn't make sense.

Ha, that bottom arm is actually both my watches. I am weak :(

I'd like to get rid of both of these watches when the new Moto 360 comes out. Ideally.

I'm not going to judge pointless purchases that's for sure. The reason I didn't dive into a Watch R for the weekend and will maybe wait for next week is because I bought an arcade stick for PS4 for Ultra Street Fighter 4... Worked out about the same way.

G watch r is $100 on att's site. Just ordered one. Hopefully it ships.

I ordered one too and it actually went through and didn't get canceled can't wait for it to arrive.

So tempted but probably a good thing it lacks WiFi so I won't pull the trigger. I need to hold out for version 2 of these things plus I have a Pebble Time on the way.

It actually has wifi according to LG but it needs another update to enable it which will be coming out in Q3.

I'm convinced it's a Motorola thing. My first gen Moto X is still on KitKat >:|

I got a Moto 360 in addition to my G Watch. So far, looks so much nicer, the leather feels cheap and charging seems slow. I still didn't update it yet though.

If I like it within the return period, I might keep it (or if I find someone to buy my G Watch)

Any news on moto 360 2nd gen?

Nope. :(

Besides a mysterious Motorola device passing through Bluetooth SIG, there hasn't been any news or rumors of a second gen. The constant fire sales of the original makes me think we may hear something soon, but I really don't know when. We will definitely hear something before the Summer's up, though.

Why would you get a 360?

Why would you get a 360?

Was on sale and wanted to try it. Also, it's a way to convert these gift cards I got back to my bank lol.

Anyway, some thoughts so far from Moto 360 compared to the LG G Watch.

Moto 360
Pros
- Looks so much nicer than the LG G Watch
- The screen looks nicer despite the lower PPI
- Larger screen is nice and how the cards go from one side of the screen to the other is nice too
- Heart rate sensor is nice
- Watch faces look nicer because of the circular form factor
- Doesn't seem to be that large or heavy. I thought it would be

Cons
- The leather on the Stone model feels really cheap even though it's real leather. It feels like plastic
- Battery life is much worse than the LG G Watch (on the first day at least)
- Performance seems worse
- Doesn't have 5.1.1 yet (and doesn't seem to be rolling out yet?)

I might just return the Moto 360 later

So after a day. What do you think? GWR or 360?

These are exactly my thoughts having owned mine for 8 months now. Looks great and screen is great. Battery life and performance are passable but subpar.

I do feel kind of sorry for Apple Watch owners that they don't get custom watchfaces, I'll be honest, it's the main feature of smartwatches for me. Just mixing it up every other week or so with a new face.

Currently using this one, which I particularly like given how you can customize it:

Was using Flash Clock for a long time before this, really enjoyed that one and it was surprisingly easy to read the time like that.

In other, unrelated, news: Spotify is coming to Android Wear this month
