Android Wear |OT| 2nd Gen is Here

There's lots you can do. Notifications are useful, Google keep recently got updated to better work on android wear, mans the next update will make apps more accessible.

It's nice just having 'ok Google' on your wrist for reminders, timers etc.

None here :/ (360). I'm looking forward to it, it should really round out the watch features. If anyone here hasn't heard of the Puiji Black watchface app BTW I'd highly recommend it. It's highly customizable and all the combinations of features still turn out looking great, so it's really hard to mess it up.

Some (non) news, but a Motorola device has passed through Bluetooth SIG.

http://www.droid-life.com/2015/05/12/new-moto-360-likely-just-stopped-off-at-bluetooth-sig/

The model number is extremely similar to the original 360's number. According to Droid-Life, when the original Moto 360 went through Bluetooth SIG, its availability was announced shortly at an event in Chicago. Not to get my hopes up too high, but hopefully this means an announcement at I/O, with a release within a month. That, along with an announcement on Wear coming to iOS would be huge for the platform. Hopefully we also see watches from other companies.

Aw Yiss, all I care about is the battery. I'll use my 360 for the gym and work and the next gen version for going out.

finally cave in after I needed a new watch, figured why not Android Wear, got the Watch R , any recommended Android Wear apps?

Just got it on my G Watch R.

Finally able to remove Wear Mini Launcher, that'll make my swiping experience so much better :D

Hey so I often don't have my phone on me at home and therefore miss messages and things. If if have both my phone and an Android Wear watch on my home network, the phone will push notifications to the watch, right?

As long as you get a watch with WiFi support, yes. Then they don't even need to be on the same network with the latest version of Android Wear.

Confirmed from various sources, including Android Police, G Watch R is receiving a software "maintenance update" to enable WiFi. Just the R, somewhere in Q3 (July as per AP)

Good to know. Sounds like it needed something a little more than just the Google update.

New UI is going to take a bit of getting used to. Changing notifications is worse now IMO - you used to swipe down and tap to switch between silent/priority/all, but now you have to touch the specific icon. And the apps launcher makes 'ok google' further away. I know you can say 'ok google' from an active watch face, but I liked the direct 'speak now' menu so I didn't have to actually say OK Google.

I assume the contacts list is going to be more useful when they add phone calling to the next generation devices. How do you manage what contacts show up? It is showing 11 - are they just the most recent or most used contacts? Can't see anywhere on the phone app to edit them.

If the G Watch R gets wifi support, I might still get one if Moto can't kill the flat tyre. New Moto being announced at I/O should knock the price down yet further too.

Got the update last night. I saw it as I want in my car and let it update while getting to my destination.
This morning I was playing with it , overall a nice update. Just don't understand the random (?)selected contacts on the contact list.

Does the Zenwatch look that much like the Apple watch? I had two people ask me if I was wearing the Apple watch...and one of them was wearing an Android wear watch himself!

People just have no clue to be honest, ever since Apple officially released the their watch I am asked /commented on daily by people thinking I have an Apple watch. (it is a LG black G) and when I talk to them they had NO clue whatsoever that smart watches have been around before Apple joined in...

Part of me shows me the name brand power of Apple though... ( I think I will get an urbane next at some point..maybe the questions will stop :p)

I bought a Sony Smartwatch 3. Why didn't anyone talk about this watch? It is awesome.

Hey I did!

Why did you get one now instead of waiting a couple days to Google I/O? Although is unlikely anything announced then will be launched soon... did you get the steel band for the Sony watch?

Why do we always end up getting the same devices? Heh.

I didn't wait because I can return it and I'm not hopeful for IO news. I can't find the steel band. I bought mine on Amazon for $190. I like this watch the best.

I don't know if I could cope with the Sony's looks, but I have an aversion to all square watches including the Apple one. I'm going with the G Watch R still if the WiFi update comes out and there's nothing announced in 2 days.

Definitely wait for potential announcements, but I can do nothing else than recommend this watch. Especially combined with a black metal band, looks great!

I second the recommendation for a black metal band - got a ritchie one from amazon for about a tenner, works fine. You'll need tools to replace it really (or go to a watch repair place)

And LG stated they are adding wifi in with a software update in Q3. Perfectly usable without, but will help when my phone is on the charger and I'm out of bluetooth range.

I thought I wanted a circle one until I realized it's crap for a smart watch. It makes no sense. Square is much more apt. Plus, I like the Sony's look a lot. It's like a fitness band.

Totally, but for a notification machine which is how I'll use it, I'll have a nice looking one or none at all.

That said, the metal band versions do look OK and since it has NFC in there, if Android Pay does get talked about in a couple of days, it'll be ready for it.

Really liking the update. Maps works how I wanted it to in the first place now. Still don't have the wrist scrolling down though.

I have a post-it note on my monitor that tells me:
-Fast to slow: scroll down
-Slow to fast: scroll up

Because who in the blue hell can remember that? Bit puzzled why it's not just a slow flick to scroll up and a fast flick to scroll down.

I am proud you've managed to last to IO. Smart. I like to think I did, too, since I can return the SW3. We had each other during these trying times.

I'm sorry but this looks hideous.

I like what Motorola has done with the Moto360 but even that has much work to do. The straps on the Google wear devices leave much to be desired, Apple has them beat in terms of the quality of the products IMO.

Looking forward to what V2 will look like.

Most Android watches you can use any standard strap with. Technically the 360 can, but it;s not recommended, but LG Watch R/Urbane can be used with any old strap. When I was looking at the Watch R, I had a dark blue Milanese loop in my basket which looked way more awesome than the Apple Watch loop.

But yeah, that watch is hideous. That's because it doesn't even need a phone to pair with, it takes a sim card and a large battery. There is a smaller Android Wear version that works normally and is much slimmer.

Contrary to Apple though, as people have said, you don't need to spend 100 bucks to replace a strap, you can just spend a couple of tenners at most on any regular watch band and put it on your watch, only a few exceptions there, to be honest.

I much prefer to pick whatever band suits me and the watch and personalise than pay a very high price for a specific Apple Watch band, but to each their own.
