Study: Some beards often contain as much poop bacteria as toilets

BeardGAF on suicide watch.
The beard revolution may be at its peak – but an investigation by microbiologists has warned a proud display of facial hair could be dirtier than a toilet.

Anyone who’s anyone is sporting a beard these days, but maybe the trend is cause for concern. Microbiologist John Golobic, of Quest Diagnostics in New Mexico, swabbed a number of beards searching for bacteria.

He said: ‘I’m usually not surprised, and I was surprised by this.'

Several beards contained normal bacteria, but some contained so much poo they were comparable to toilets.

If there were similar samples in the water system, the scientist said it would have to be shut down for disinfecting.

‘Those are the types of things you’d find in (fecal matter),’ Mr Golobic said. And although none of the levels were enough to cause illness, the microbiologist said: ‘There would be a degree of uncleanliness that would be somewhat disturbing.’

Lots of hand washing and thorough beard scrubbing is the key, gents.

And Mr Golobic added: ‘Try to keep your hands away from your face, as much as possible,” he said.

I doubt many men think they have to wash thier beard like thier hair.

Makes guys stroking their beard seem like an incredibly gross thing. Like worse than scratching your butt before you shake hands gross.

If beards are that bad I dread to think about the beard in your butt with dingleberries and all that.

Shaving inside your butt is difficult if your butt is big, but its also kinda weird if you shave the butt cheeks if you have hair legs, because then it looks like you got fur leggings on if you got hairy legs, so you kinda have to allow for some hair on the butt cheeks, but inside the butt.. in the eye of sauron? I bet there are more bacteria in there than in a komodo dragons saliva.

But another gaffer told me that e coli bacteria actually might not kill you. I don't understand that because I thought people had died from unhygienic chefs who forgot to wash their hands after bathroom breaks.

Until they get a reasonable sample size, (say 20% of the beard population) I don't think we can trust the data.

Many strains of E. coli are nonpathogenic inhumans. So, maybe that Gaffer was saying that only certain E. coli are bad?

Didn't Mythbusters have a show basically proving everything has shit on it? Even your toothbrush!

As I recall, that episode was awful because even their control toothbrush was contaminated. As far as I'm concerned, that experiment was a failure.
