CDPR keeping Witcher 3 keys for Origin, uPlay and GOG; tell GMG to go pound sand

We don't know what is said in agreement between volunteer mods and CDP. It's very possible that CDP isn't legally responsible to statements made by their mods on their forums even if they may reflect on CDP when people pick on that stuff.

GMG harmed its own reputation all by themselves by purchasing some 3rd party keys and going around CDP.

Yup. They would have been better off just releasing a statement saying "we'd like to sell the Witcher 3, but CDPR won't sell to us", and leaving the ball in their court. Circumventing their normal publisher relations seems incredibly short-sighted given their fairly consistent history. A reputation is not so easily mended, especially in the age of internet knee-jerk reactions (of which this thread has had many).

If they've repaired relations, good, hopefully it doesn't hurt either company much in the long run. I like CDPR's games and site and GMG's great deals, and want them both to continue.

Honestly i feel, in my opinion of course, is that GMG should just disclose who is selling them the keys.

I know it won't happen but it basically saves face and may reopen doors for CDPR in the future.

We still have no idea if the keys are legit, they are only claimed to be.

In the same time I get CDPR is trying to maximize profits, but not having one of the biggest distributors of video games carrying your game is a stupid move regardless where else it goes.

This whole situation is dumb.

What reason GMG would have to give in to CDP and make deal with them now or vice versa?

With statement GMG released they more or less said that they tried to make deal with CDP, didn't get one and then turned to 3rd parties for TW3 keys not caring about what CDP has to say.

Just dont buy a day1 version and there wont be any small file to download.
But its probably abour principle and that is perfectly fine then

Not DRM at all. This is in place to prevent early release/leak.


Once the game releases and if you have a legitimate copy you should be able to play offline without any issues.

I think it's very unreasonable to assume that game wouldn't have any pre-release protection in place. Even company like CDP doesn't want pre-release .torrents popping up with fully playable copy of the game inside.

Maybe they should have tied all physical copies to Steam and not allow GOG preload and suddenly no protections required.

Yeah, but it still does nothing for early releases of the console versions. Unless there's a new GOG console server up that I'm unaware of.

They want GOG to be the price leader for the game, and won’t play ball with retailers who would discount further than they’re willing to.

It doesn't matter what the agreement is between cdpr and their mods. If you mod an official forum owned by cdpr you are by definition their representative and any statement made that is slanderous should be addressed by cdpr.

Am I misunderstanding something? Day 1 version is the official release version, right? I mean, it's the official release day and I order The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Collectors Edition from Amazon. So would I need to download anything because for me that's a "day 1 version", unlike GotY editions and such.

If Green Man Gaming had to raise the price to appease CDPR, that just confirms all of the pricing theories that have been stated in this thread.

This tells me that the only thing CDPR was pissed about was the price (and their money) and that they didn't give a fuck who GMG got their keys from since GMG is legit anyways.

Im honestly not sure how this stuff works, I guess there are different print runs and the first batch of shipment has this drm stuff and the following wont have it. If you preordered you have to download the file

Every PC copy that is printed before 19th of May has key files missing from the DVD's. These files need to be downloaded from GOG upon release of the game so it works. This is to prevent pre-release leaks of playable PC copies, to prevent piracy.

Assuming the "deal" covers purchases made when the promo was still active, they no longer have to sell those copies at a loss. GMG seems to get their keys close to release date, so I assume this is possible.

It worked out well for them in the end if this happened.

They are doing you a fovor by allowing you to predownload before release and then play earlier on release day. It isn't DRM.

Shocker. I was getting shouted down earlier for this when it was plainly obvious cdpr was just pissed they were being undercut. I've lost a lot of respect for cdpr in the past 24 hours but it just lowered them to every other developer out there from their high pedestal they were on to me.

Ah man, was gonna take GMG on their deal today. Shouldn't have waited I guess. Lol. Oh well, I'm a patient man I'll just wait until the next sale. $6.00 off isn't enough to make me bite.

Ah, that makes sense then and I have no problem with this. I've never pre-ordered a game in my life and don't intent to start after so many years of buying games. So I will be able to buy and play my game without much problems then.

Why would I do that? As a kid, you want to have things "now". I'm 25, I'm fine with waiting a week or whatever. Also, my lovely connection (88 KB/s download) doesn't want to download anything if it's not really needed.
 
CDPR is quickly losing their 'gamers favourite developer' status with their recent moves. They are just making a fool out of themselves with these poor PR statements and not wanting to talk to big shops. Calling out shops without first engaging in a proper dialogue is below them. Did their head of PR / marketing leave in the last year or something?

Just a few words of explanation:

We have worked with GMG in the past for w2 and they were a legit partner.
We control all digital and the codes, and because we decided not to sell Keys to GMG it came as a suprise that they are doing a special promo without buying Keys from us. We have reach out to ask for the source of they Keys but up until now there was no response. They might sell nVidia Keys (which are not to be sold but gifted with the nVidia promo), or they just bough Keys from gog just like a regular customer and now they resell them with a loss (we cannot prevent anyone from selling something).
They also list Bandai Namco as the published which is not true for w3 (namco is our box distributor in PAL), so GMG is not a CDPR partner for W3 but they still might sell Keys that will work.

Last year, year and a half was full of bad PR moves and non standard behavior in my opinion. They are even using some AAA tactics like countless videos and trailers before launch, Expansion Pass announcement before game release, glorifying free DLCs, stating that they are not amateurs and then delaying game again, exclusive content for X1...

They are not but this is not day 1 patch. If you buy retail PC game before release you won't be able to play it without internet day 1.

Also did I like what? I don't understand that part of your post. At end of the day I don't really care if store X is selling game Z for 33 and store Y for 60 if both stores are above the board.

What CDPR has implemented for PC copies (retail + GOG) of the game is different from Day 1 patch. There is Day 1 patch + small key file download for mentioned copies of the game.

Two additional physical trinkets for Collector's Edition of XBO version and none in-game content, lets be precise so people don't flip out when left to assume details. Also not sure why to be upset about large amounts of media coverage pre-release as you are doing marketing for your game? They want TW3 to sell really well and bush radio marketing won't cut it.

I don't buy many games day 1 and it helps to feel good about the developer. I know you are right but I still favor certain developers over others I can't help it.
 
If they don't put "drm" on the physical release, what's to stop someone from leaking the game on torrent sites way before release date? This is the only way.
