It does if the likes of Douglas Alexander and Jim Murphy are falling and they're struggling to hold a single seat. Psychologically the damage will be severe. But you're technically right - that's why the Swindon North result is by far the most important piece of information we've had so far - the Tories look to be gaining from Labour, perhaps because of strong showings from the Greens and UKIP.

Philip Cowley, a psephologist, thinks Swindon North suggests the exit poll undershot the Tories if anything.

People want to point fingers at something, labour were in power and conservatives helped people point those fingers. It makes no sense to blame labour for any of the issues caused due to american banks.

Exactly. It matters for the long term political scene in Scotland, it matters for policy, and matters for the continual engagement of ordinary folk in politics with this big turnout. It /also/ puts pressure on the SNP to show they can work with the other parties in Westminster, not just in the Scottish Parliament.
