I think people are overestimating the chances of another independence referendum this government, at the very least. I can see one happening again next government if the political situation continues to deteriorate, and definitely if the UK votes for an EU exit, but otherwise it'd be the exact same debates over oil, Trident, and Sterling.

So Farage said if he loses, he resigns. Who would take his place?

Coburn being the defacto Scottish leader would likely be a candidate, but I think he'd be a disaster. Not sure who UKIP have who wouldn't be tbh, Reckless?
Carswell, Clacton are stupid enough to vote him. BBC Essex journo on Twitter source says Carswell hold but reduced majority.

Carswell. He was rumoured to have attempted a coup even before the election.

If I hear one more Labour MP say that voting SNP will give a Tory government I'm going to scream, and I don't want a tory government!

How can they be so staggeringly, stupidly inept at this? Ed Milibands political operation has, from day 1, been appallingly out of touch and badly handled. Every time, every issue, and even now they cannot face up to the fact that screaming at pointing fingers at the Tories isn't enough to get elected!

These swings are relentless.

If we actually leave the EU then I swear to god I'm moving to the Netherlands or some shit.

Still up, eh? :D

I don't think there'll be a direct referendum this next session either. But I see more devolved powers happening.

The comedy value of that would be great. But a Scottish UKIP leader wouldn't play down there.

Can't wait til Dave loses his deposit.

Easy to blame the SNP/Scotland and a myth of anti-English conspiracies.

Maybe baby, but if we can't criticise Labour on the grounds that Osborne offered to match their spending, should be not extend the same generous gesture to the Tories when it comes to cuts?

why can't we criticise labour? both parties had laughably terrible proposed plans for 'recovery'

The Liberal Democrats are collapsing and Labour is shattered. The SNP have no reach outside Scotland which may or may not remain in the UK anyway. None of the political actors or groups that traditionally held pro-EU stances have the sort of political capital or physical resources to dedicate towards defending it.

Conservatives are all about economy and big business, they won't let that happen. We're staying in the EU, even if it's under different terms.

Some Conservatives are. Some aren't.

So what are the main reasons Labour lost? Based on reading people from the UK on twitter I get the impression it's because they betrayed Scotland during the independence vote and it came back to bite them? And Ed is too nerdy looking? What else?

Don't worry, reality has very little to do with the triumph of right wing propaganda in England tonight. And the fact that I managed to suppress a triumph of the will line there makes me ridiculously proud of myself.

Too left-wing (and too reliant on the SNP to form a government) for the middle classes, too similar to the Conservatives for the apathetic.

Lib Dem voters. The Lib Dems have evaporated and their voters are breaking 2 to 1 to the Tories. The Labour numbers are holding up and even improving a decent bit but the 2010 Lib Dem voters are mainly voting Tory.
