Labour need to federalise, they can't carry on like this.

Interested to see what happens to the Libdem's, do they drop the Orange book influence.

If Cameron gets a Tory version of the EU negotiated, then I'm voting to get the fuck out.


All in all, this result is bollocks, but I'm hoping a few boils get lanced in the aftermath.

I disagree with this. Since Ed got voted as leader, this was the result I predicted since the Lib Dems were shagged no matter what happened and Ed was never the best choice. Labour haven't been able to convince the British people of too many merits due to a shit cabinet on top of the terrible leadership and they're paying the consequences.

It's a much better picture here than it is in the US. if the Tories cock it up as bad as some are saying, they will be held to account and you can see by some of the Tory responses in here that they feel they will do a better job this term. some are clearly one party voters and will vote Tory no matter what, but I am seeing some people who may vote for another party (or have done in the past) if a case can be made for them.
 
does anyone have info on the 2005/6 election? Everyone is talking about the LibDem collapse, but I'm wondering whether their 2010 result was boosted by the idea they may be a reasonable 3rd party choice, and yesterday's vote is actually a lot of conservative voters who may have voted LD last time, simply going back to their previous preference?
 
At least I have the consolation prize that, even though I hate them and everything they stand for, I'm probably better off under a Tory government. Doesn't do much to make it feel better though.

But not everyone will be. I would happily give up my right to buy in exchange for more council housing. Tories, and many that vote for them do so out of selfishness. Not for the common good.

Cameron's going to get sod all renegotiated with Europe. Merkel knows it's a zero sum game and just prolonging the crisis. There's enough of the awkward squad in the Tory ranks to ensure that Cameron needs to have a referendum even if he got major concessions from the EU which he won't. I reckon he'll want to do it as quickly as possible.

Lib Dem had 51 seats in 2005, they gained 3 in 2010 but quite a large portion of the overall vote compared to 2005 and now it's fully collapsed.
 
I'm studying/working in the arts, I'm disabled and I'm about to graduate and begin looking for a job. This result has got my hopes down.

Same. Probably a fair bit better for me personally in the short term. Don't think it'll be better in the long term, and I'd never want it to come at the pain of the poor and disabled, but oh well.
 
What the fuck did I wake up to? I mean in a local sense great news but on a national scale I'm baffled. Fair enough the writing was on the wall for the Lib Dems for pretty much the last 5 years but looking at some of their strong seats and seeing the distribution of votes and who the electorate voted for really has me speechless.

To be fair to all the polls leading up to yesterday they're pretty spot on, in line with voter intention and percentages mind and not actual seats. Problem is we don't just vote for a party but for a representative for that part on a constituency basis. Some marginal seats were won by a couple of hundred votes while others had massive swings but that's only going to be represented in constituency polls which are obviously thin on the ground due to how costly they are.

Well I hope some folks know what they might be in for. Quite a few peeps here at work aren't old enough to remember a full fat, non propped up Tory government.

Well 90% of tory voters may all love the NHS, but you can't vote on specific issues, only on general stuff. Can't blame voters for that anymore than you can blame Labour voters for the Iraq war.

It is not on their manifesto, therefore they haven't voted for it. It may end up like that but unless polls show tory voters want the NHS privatised then one has nothing to do with the other.

On this issue though, the Labour party were the first to do it so can hardly be trusted either.

Voted Lib Dem as I thought they should be rewarded for promising to increase the income tax threshold and being in a coalition which has acted upon that. It's sad to see them get eviscerated like this - I was excited about their housing policy to have a tenant's rent contribute to a deposit on a house, in particular.

The cries of chaos I think are a little bit overstated here. That said, I think of all the policies proposed by the Conservatives, I am worried about the £12 billion welfare cuts and where they going to fall.

Re the referendum though, I'm surprised at the strength of opposition to that on here from some people. We wouldn't be cut off from the world by voting to leave.
 
Don't worry chaps, it is not like there are plenty of less melodramatic disappointed lefties to discuss this with here, just focus on the melodrama.

Do you honestly think the majority of people know what the fuck they are voting for? Most voters are complete idiots who eat all the propaganda from the right wing tabloids. Do you honestly think the Tories would be in if the media didn't constantly attack both Labour and Miliband?

That's completely ignoring 40% of people didn't vote.


Democracy is flawed and this is proof. Fuck Democracy.

Other than 'one party for life' voters, and arguably those voters that will tend towards the left/right based on age (I would expect Neogaf to have more younger voters and therefore skew more towards the left naturally) - I think there are three things that happened:

1) Ed Milliband is a bad leader and didn't do nearly enough to get a groundswell of support. They didn't even have any decent policies until this year. They need a big shakeup. Wonder if big brother will come back now?

2) The SNP got a massive boost from the referendum. I hope they don't use this as some kind of mandate to push for another independence push. This also clearly fucked up labour/LD disproportionately compared to the Tories.

3) the economy is kind of ok, maybe. Still work to do. And simply put people will, and always have, trust the Tories with the economy more than the other parties. If things were stronger, people may have felt more comfortable voting Labour.





Also, lol at people paying quite so much attention to opinion polls leading up to the election. Was it 2005 that the polls got it so dramatically wrong? Can't remember but they've been entirely wrong before.

This is the worst for me. I have high-functioning autism. It's not too much of a problem for me, I don't need much support or help and I'll manage fine no matter what the government do. But it means I've met so many incredible people who really struggle with their disabilities from day to day, and knowing what this means for them is awful.
 
Sturgeon seems to be killing it on BBC News right now, saying that a referendum won't happen until AT LEAST 2016. Even in spite of the stupid questions being asked~

To a certain extent - Clegg will go then the tuition fee stench will (mostly) go with him. On the Lib Dem FB page, the tuition fee comment came up (and almost always got the most likes) on almost everything they posted. Clegg leaving will give LD a scapegoat for that.

But it'll take a long time to recover. Plus it depends on who the next leader is. No-one who is caught eating a bacon sandwich, hopefully. And they need to find their identity as a party, Clegg going will see a lot of Orange Bookers leave I reckon.

As a side-note, I follow a lot of Lib Dem MPs on Twitter and it's… weird to see them all out of work this morning and linking to their CV. It's easy to forget there's a very human side on that side of the fence too.

Obviously I'm very happy with this result, but it's sad to see the death of the Lib Dems. Make no mistake - they're absolutely *done*. There's no coming back from here IMO. They simply aren't a national force and we are at a stage where there are credible alternatives in almost every direction from the Tories, so long as Labour don't elect some Foot-esque loon.

Cameron has sealed his position in Tory lore today, but if the union collapses under his watch it'll disappear in an instant. If he can use this (probable) majority to quell that fear, even if just for a generation, he'll go down in history in a good way.

Balls gone = the British voting public are wise.

Dave Miliband isn't the answer for labour, the base and the regions are fractured. And frankly if you want Blairism just vote tory, democracy needs real alternatives to be worth anything.
