Wanted to point this picture that's not in the OP but is from the album where all the images in the OP come from.

Granted, this isn't the best comparison but if you've been keeping up with the game and have seen the media that CDPR has put out, you know for a fact that nothing even comes close to the bottom screenshot.
Why, CDPR, why...

We that looks like another case of false advertising to me.

Just this time around the game developer is well loved.

This isn't going to stop unless a developer gets successfully sued.

Because for all talk of being in development and the constant changes. The original trailer is what attracts a lot of consumers.

So let me make sure I am understanding this, because of umbra, the game is going to have the same lod, draw distance and texture quality across all platforms?

Well I am no expert on this and there is no confirmation, but that's at least the rumours on why there won't be a LOD slider in the option menu.

CD Projekt RED claimed that most distances (e.g. for meshes) are set in assets, meaning that while there will – probably – be presets to choose from, there won’t be a slider for draw distance itself.

also, Gaf -> Internet - > Gaf

If I understand correctly, It's a result of the Umbra 3 technology they use. It's a highly efficient middleware.
Visibility checks are"baked" into "tomb" files, and occlusion/LOD data is streamed in instead of generated at run time.
So changing the LOD distance would require generating new tomb files.

Edit: They could provide an extra set of tomb data as a ~600 MB download, but maybe that's already included in their ultra setting.

To be honest, it is pretty hilarious that people still believe the first reveal trailers, especially when this game is shown early, in the development cycle there are tons of changes, I know that these methods are pretty shitty for all companies, but that is obviously nothing new in the game industry as of today. And no, I do not defend CD Project by any means.

Are all the textures and models the same?

Yes, there is only one version, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to make the game in time. We would have to take it all apart, and then build it and test it on three different platforms at the same time, which is impossible to do. Therefore, we have one common basis, and then transfer it to other platforms.

We manage it differently on platforms with less memory. Less complex models are loaded; it all depends on what is going on on the screen at the moment. To sum up, there are only a few differences between PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. They are not aimed at changing the configuration; instead their purpose is to solve certain problems.

Have you followed the comments under The Witcher 3 VGA trailer? Many people were complaining about the drop in graphics quality in comparison to the first video materials.

Yes, we’ve seen them…

Aren’t you afraid that after its release the game will share the fate of Watch_Dogs, where the game was being compared to the first E3 gameplay?

If someone rewatches the trailer they will notice that the character models look better in the game; even Geralt is more polished – for instance, he has better shaders. We’ve added a bunch of details and we’ve significantly improved the facial expressions and the lip sync. We have 7 different dubbing versions, so we’re not able to record the changes on actors’ face with the performance capture technology, like it was done in, say, Call of Duty. That wouldn’t fit on three blu-ray discs. Keeping that in mind, we’ve implemented a dynamic system based on vowels and consonants, similar to the one in the previous two installments, where it did rather poorly. With The Witcher 3, the difference is astounding – we have set the bar really high for the entire industry as compared to other games that rely on this system (such as BioWare games – author’s note); that’s another thing that wasn’t visible in the trailer.

Wait..so if they had one spec for all three systems, wouldn't they have to match the lowest denominator (xbox one?)

Man if they could've retained that Sword of Destiny fidelity... Damn that would have been too good. Back then the game had this, for the lack of better word, a next-gen in open world quality and shine to it. Right now it's a really good looking game for an open world game, which is still great of course. Can't wait for the game to arrive. Less than two weeks now...

I don't understand why people keep using the Sword of Destiny trailer to prove a downgrade occurred. That was always an in engine trailer, a target render, and never in game footage. It was unrealistic to expect that level of fidelity in an open world game, a 980 would probably run it at like 10fps, would you rather have that? Or did CDP ever say that the footage was entirely in game and representative of what we would have seen on 5/19? If this is the case it would obviously be a lie and people who really care about this have every right to be upset, but i only remember them saying that Ultra details were never shown in a live gameplay, only high due to optimization and "surprise" (=marketing, but i think we all knew that), at least before those youtubers videos that hit in masses a couple of weeks ago after that event. The game looks fantastic as it is, and seems to run smooth as well, so i'm perfectly fine with how it turned out to be. People can have different opinions, but basing them on unrealistic expectations is never wise imho. We all risk to burn ourselves for no real reason instead of enjoying what we have and that can be awesome on its own, really.

if we listen to the denial crowd we gonna be waiting all 200 hours in one spot looking for that mythical time of day / season that is supposedly as high quality as the old footage lmao

The bottom must secretly be a teaser for The Witcher 5. The lighting is at least a generation ahead of what we actually got, if not more.

I didn't know it was confirmed :/

Man this is turning into a complete joke to me.

If there is one thing undeniable it is the horrible lod in this game so far. And that is locked in? Even on PC.

So after all the denying, console parity basically was established.

That's due to Umbra 3, but on the other hand you have no loading screens.

Which is a pretty great feat but honestly I was expecting something more akin to Ground Zeroes when it comes to console vs high end pc in terms of tweaks, etc...

http://international.download.nvidi...g-quality-comparison-1-extra-high-vs-low.html

I hope it's something they can correct for Cyberpunk 2077...Do we have screens of the video settings yet so what we'll be able to tweak and customize?

those shots dont at all represent the changes between old and current witcher media. im surprised you of all people think the sharpening filter and colorgrading are the only changes.

edit - what your images do in fact show, is that the differences in foliage quality between old and current witcher media is not simply a sharpening filter.

To me it looks like the post-AA is ruining the foliage quality, but I could be wrong.

Here's an example of how awful foliage can look with FXAA:

You may personally feel it is justified but that wasn't really my point.

Just in about one/two generations the games industry has successfully:

Raised game prices

Began DLC to add extra money

Began developing DLC beside the main game and withholding it from the main product.

Day one DLC

Converted extras once considered to be free content into paid extras.

Rampant growth of in-app purchases in major franchises. Sports and multiplayer being the major victim.

Charged for online.

Expanded DRM

Pre-order bonuses

....I'm probably missing a few others. But this is kind of getting off topic. My point was merely that the music and film industry would of loved to have the sort of success rate with increased monetization attempts that the games industry has successfully achieved. Hence the most corporate friendly entertainment industry.
Most gaming companies don't have huge profit margins, so getting more money from their most dedicated fans is really one of the very few ways to stay in the black.
Ideally you'd have games shipping with amazingly rich content and appeal to wider audience that way, but it often would not expand the userbase to the point where that extra content included in the base game price would make the project more profitable.

Personally, I almost never buy season passes or DLC and I never feel like I'm getting an incomplete product. Some games in the past went out of their way to provide the player with incredible post endgame content (like Resident Evil 4 or Bayonetta), which is nowadays relegated to premium DLC and it is a shame that games don't offer it for free anymore - it added a ton of flavor (what I do most of the time is wait for GOTY editions and get all extra stuff anyway). But even in the past I rarely cared about this side content and really explored it, so I don't think like a lot has been lost.

I don't pay for online on consoles (I don't have a PS4 or an Xbox), I don't play games with really obnoxious DRM, preorder bonuses were there during PS2 and OG Xbox days, though typically in the form of a physical trinket.

My only interaction with the movie industry is streaming stuff on Netflix, my only interaction with the music industry is listening to some songs on France Inter or Trójka (French/Polish readio station respectively), so I can't make any comparisons, but I don't think it's all as evil or anti-consumer as some people paint it. And when it reaches that point (Xbox One's early "vision", charging for Skyrim mods) the backlash is humongous and the companies have scale back on their plans, which shows that the community is not willing to accept everything the content and service providers want to enforce.

I think the only way CDPR can put everyone's mind at ease and put a stop to this argument is... To release the game right now. On all 3 platforms.
Considering street date is broken in UAE, just open the floodgates!!! ;)

P.S. Looking good, but there is a downgrade. Also, why are colours so oversaturated?

im no fan of fxaa, believe me. that does not explain the difference in foliage between old and new witcher media, nor does a sharpening filter. the difference in your dragon age comparison is worlds apart from the difference we are discussing in witcher

For multiplatform games there will be always concessions necessary regarding the tech. Only exclusive games can fully utilize the power of a system.

But expensive productions like open world RPG will be always multiplatform. Xenoblade X will probably be the biggest exclusive RPG this gen.

And that's the PS4 version...

Look, some parts of the game look worse than the first couple vertical slice trailers. Some parts look better. Some parts just look different. It's a work in progress, this is to be expected.

Key points.

Still the best looking open world game currently.

Still has all of the same fancy effects, lighting techniques, physics, etc. and most assets are the same or better. (Exception being fire)

Things like LoD and fidelity of certain effects seems to have been optimized but overall, it's damn close considering the trailers are 2 years old on an in Dev game.

Plus, there's always the inevitable Enhanced Edition to make it look even better.

Will also do.

It's not because some devs do that "bait & switch" technique that all do it.

I don't give a flying F about any downgrades, but now that you guys pointed it out I can see a very noticeable difference in artistic style. The game is now much more colourful than on previous gameplays/trailers. It still looks beautiful, but it doesn't have that dark, gritty Stalker slavic feel. :(

In most of these 'downgrade' (urgh..) threads, I tend to be on the side of developers. 2 or 3 years ago, the current gen consoles weren't nailed down fully. The entire thing was a moving target and its likely that whatever they had to built, was only running on PC hardware.

But the idea that they literally forced the PC version down to console levels of fidelity kind of on purpose (regardless of the justification), is kind of nuts. I work at a software developer and whilst we don't make games, you simply don't compromise other platforms for the sake of speed. What an odd decision.

You think this is a joke ?

People have built computers in anticipation for this game. There are dudes that post in this very forum that splashed $2000 to make sure they have the adequate hardware to enjoy what was promised so far.
So, yes, CDPR lied and they should be at least ashamed for that. In the US you sue people for shit like this.

You forgot to add charging for demo's -> MGSV:GroundZeroes and FFXV

I am hoping that devs/publishers in the future take an example from Sony/From what they did with Bloodborne. Didn't show it too early so there was fairly low downgrade accusations.

Well Just Cause 3 and the new Batman Arkham Knight are not released yet, so you can not fully say if they will get a little downgrade or not, you can only say a downgrade is there when you have the full finished product, Batman Arkham Knight and Just Cause 3 are not yet gold or finished, so these 2 are bad examples.

Well from what it looks like umbra kind of forced that issue. I am still a bit unclear but it seems that for whatever reason their method of choice forced a shared lod, draw distance and texture cap.

But ultimately this whole thing becomes an issue because of a developers denial. If they had not lied and continued to misrepresent the visuals of the game by insisting in interviews the final product would match the footage released, this wouldn't blow up the way it does.

No, people should use common sense really, the 1st thing with heavy downgrade was Watch_Dogs no?
People still think that reveal trailers are equal to the finished product, and now everyone is mad or at least most here are mad that the game was downgraded, I do not get it really.
I really think most people are just barely mad that again has lied in their faces again, and they fell for the same trick again, oh and I pre ordered it after the the E3 reveal in June 2014, I knew this would happen.

It clearly still looks very good, but if devs keep pushing out screens and videos which look far beyond the finished product then they deserve all the shit they get.

Just don't lie. It's not hard to do.

Look at the Star Wars reveal. People were clinging to "in-engine" like it meant something. That game is never ever going to look like that trailer and yet people were losing their mind.

You'd think by now people would realise after Madden '06 and Watch Dogs and a million other examples.

I admit, that's not hard on the eyes at all. I'm just disappointed we're going to have a console generation that feels like it isn't THAT much of an upgrade over the last. This is nothing like going from an SNES to an N64. If anything, it feels like the only difference between this generation and the last is they tweaked the settings on games from low to medium. Diminishing returns I guess.
