Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

Well, I read that Iga does claim that 90% of the game is funded by this publisher and I assume expensive QA will be handled through them with an additional support for marketing and offering them the opportunity for their physical discs on PS4 and X1. That solid amount of funding to start and all of the other bits necessary to make a big game, like a legit Metroidvania in the tradition of releases past, will ensure that this won't fall apart like a solely KS-funded game might when they don't have the financial room to get people locked in for development and when things might take more money than anticipated.

Wait, 90 percent?

So if this kickstarter gets to, like, two million dollars... it's a twenty million dollar budget?!

Less than 100k for Hayter, I guess there will be more stretch goals announced before the funding deadline. online or offline coop would be nice or some extra modes like boss rush or hoard mode.

I'm sad that this is a Kickstarter.

Ugh: This Kickstarter video is everything I hate about Kickstarter videos,

2. The open mentioning that they don't even need the KS money.

From a consumer perspective, if the developer secures outside funding than that mitigates your risk in backing the project. Creeping closer to a glorified pre-order rather than a true Kickstarter.

Highly doubt the money would be used in that manner.

lol. Its hard to imagine what IGA would even do with a 20 million dollar budget. The guy's entire career at Konami was basically him trying to squeeze blood from a stone.

Is there any reason Igy couldn't use Dracula? Not like Castlevania created the character.

It's in the FAQ
WHERE'S DRACULA?

Dracula is part of a different legacy. Bloodstained is a new project, and IGA is excited to use it to introduce new enemies. Of course, he'll need your help—over the course of the campaign IGA plans to talk to backers about his new villains, and a new selection of demons and classic b-movie monsters is definitely still in the tarot cards.

Whoa... In all this time of seeing many kickstarters here on GAF, this is the first one that I actually have backed! Gotta have my physical PS4 copy!

wat

I mean, it's Konami we're talking about. But I don't see how they'd be worried about something a former employee was doing.

Here's the quote from Polygon's article: http://www.polygon.com/features/2015/5/11/8576141/koji-igarashi-day-in-the-life

Judd says a handful of companies showed interest and sent the concept through their processes, but the final money never came.

"For Japanese publisher subsidiaries who had interest in the title, it was oftentimes the U.S. offices that wanted to do it, because Castlevania was a game that resonated with U.S. audiences, whereas the European subsidiaries didn’t," he says. "And the way that Japanese game publishers are set up, it’s usually Japan versus Europe and America together in one group. So, unless Europe and America agree on a concept together, then it doesn’t move forward. That happened a few times.

"For major Western publishers, they would look at it and say, ‘This is too Japanese.’ Again, it was very disappointing insomuch as, if they had looked at the sales data at all, they would realize this was a title very much like Mega Man that sold very well in America. But every publisher has their brand image, and maybe Activision releasing a Castlevania game would look very weird, so fair enough.

"Then the mid-level publishers; there were a few that said, ‘Listen, we have ties to Konami and we don’t want to bite the hand that feeds us, so we we’re not going to go in that direction.’ So there were some politics too."

The series is called "Devil Castle Dracula" in Japan, so adding Dracula to Bloodstained may be a little too much.

Just for your information: Inti Creates aren't the main developers behind Mighty No. 9 - Comcept (Inafune's studio) is. They are just the contract worker Comcept got for the game.

Inti Creates is a good company and has made a lot of great games. Blame Comcept's incompetence if you have to.

IntiCreates is basically a bunch of Megaman devs :lol. They know how to do platforming stuff well, I'm certain! Still weird how they're doing contract work for MN9 instead of being the main developer given their pedigree.

No, but is there any reason why he absolutely should? This new project has complete freedom, story wise, from old expectations. Time to start something new.

Also 75k in the last hour. Slowed down, but still going stronk.

I wonder if they'll add more stretch goals when this thing blows past $850,000 before it's first 12 hours of being available.

Some more stretch goals should be unlocked from the achievements, but no one is updating the page.

He personally felt it was too linked to his previous work, and he didn't want to make a game that felt too half-assed by relying entirely on a previous work.

We'll be lucky if we get a Belmont clan equivalent, by the looks of it too.

Holy shit this just made my evening!

I think there should be a concern, but not as much. MN9 is coming out to pretty much every console lol, so the graphics had to take a hit to ensure that.

I don't think either of these games would stress even last gen hardware, I'd say the graphical fidelity of Mighty Number 9 is more to do with budgetary rather than technical constraints.

I suppose I hope he still uses vampires. If not one for A boss.

Also Werewolves and Frankenstein and mummies etc etc

Drac wouldn't need to the lord of the castle but perhaps a boss of the vampires.

But really just have vamps for fun

Also don't forget MN9 is being made with the UE3, not 4 hence the ability to port it to WiiU, PS3 and 360. Unlike Bloodstain which being on UE4 will make next to impossible to port to said last-gen consoles (yes, including the WiiU).

Is there any chance Iga will read the feedback and bring back Kojima for the artstyle or at least make it darker than the current "anime style"?

Yep, I originally went for the $750 tier then said fuck it. It was already at 8/10 left when I got in.

Cool. If the last slot it is still there when I get to my desktop, I may just hope in as at least there's another gaffer in there lol

Never backed a game on kickstarter before but I went in for this one.

Growing up I recall being excited to get my hands on a Playstation when I finally could. I played the various games when I had a chance and became super excited when I saw a Castlevania would be released for it.

Played SOTN a lot and would come back to it occasionally as it was and remains one of my all time favorite games for the PS1.

Looks good based on the concept art, plot, and the talent behind it. Going in for 60 since that case will look nice in my PS4 collection.

Oh, looks like I was wrong on my assumptions here. I had no idea about that. But this is not a project that I have been following to any degree. Interesting that they are using a safety net like this. But if it gets the game made... then sure, why not?
