The Witcher 3 | Review Thread

I have seen a twitch stream where Geralt was asked about his previous events and if you want to know them, they are this ones:

Aryan La Valette is alive/ is dead
Who did you chosed in Flotsam - Roche or Iorveth ?
Is Henselt alive or dead ?
Did you go save Triss or Saskia ?
Did you let Sheala de Tancarville be killer or did you saved her ?

I don't get it.
I saved Triss and Saskia by using the dagger to release her curse.

Trusted Reviews - 10/10

With commiserations to Bioware and Bethesda, Wild Hunt is the new RPG by which all other RPGs should be judged. Not only has CD Projekt Red deliverered the largest and most convincing fantasy open-world we’ve ever seen, but a storyline, quests and systems that make it an incredibly compelling place to run, ride and sail around in. It’s the GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption of sword and sorcery sagas and the biggest, most breathtaking time sink you’re likely to play this year.

Technically you
only saved Saskia and released her from the spell. Triss was saved by Letho. Going for Triss changes how things shake down after fighting the dragon.

Apparently any fetch quests there are add a bit of flavour as to not be boring

So you hopefully wont get any "Please get me 20 bird dicks" kind of quests

I laughed at bird dicks.

Sounds good. Still not sure. Haven't seen enough of the combat. Liked Witcher 2 well enough, but the combat wasn't its strong suit. Unless this is tons better in that regard, I'll probably wait for price drops.

Hmm, I swear
Triss was with me before meeting Letho
. Have to go check my saves.

That's a heck of a quote.

And the praise keeps on coming:

I'm sorry to mention it, but can someone at least PM me what the Gerstmann stuff is, not in a position to check myself, just curious what the "controversy" is?

I'm playing Witcher 1 right now. PLEASE tell me that the combat system will be better in 2 and 3 because that shit in the first game is HORRIBLE.

Witcher 2 improves it by an order of magnitude, and Witcher 3 seems to refine it further. So, yes.

Jeff doesn't like the game. That's literally all it was. It was a tweet and in no way a review or anything.

If you want to hear his full impressions, he spoke about it more on this week's Giant Bombcast.

You can't have it both ways
because that decision affects how mages and magic is seen. Nilfgaard can manipulate message if you don't save Triss, but if you save Triss she spills the beans and prevents widespread hunt of mages.

The "controversy" is that he didn't like the game. People got upset. Mod decided he didn't want anyone mentioning it.

That simple.

On the podcast he elaborates: The game crashed twice on him, didn't draw him in.

Don't know whyt hsi was some weird poitn of contension... oh noes, someone doesn't liek the game! Woe is us!

So it looks like stock market has reacted to those reviews positively

Has much been said about loot? One of my major complaints with Skyrim was that end dungeon loot was generally lacking and you were always better off creating your own.

I know there is level scaling with the loot, but hoping it's still worth doing dungeons/quests for the gear.

YEah combat in witcher was... weird. Like they couldn't decide whether to go action or strategic, and they ended up with this horrible mutant combinaiton of the two that wasn't strategically interesting or deep or challenging, nor was it remotely responsive and accurate and fun like you'd want an action system to be.

I just updated the title. I didn't do that to encourage discussion of the tweet or other brief commentary offered, but just because it's been a day and hopefully that being a hot button issue has died down. There was no grand controversy. He just offered one tweet expressing that the game didn't grab him like he had hoped. And due to the combination of Jeff being a well-known personality AND that this was practically the lone dissenting opinion at the time, a meandering back-and-forth about one tweet dominated the conversation. The conversation was mostly silly and derailing the thread.

Frankly, I place more of the blame on the people that felt compelled to do pre-emptive damage control by attempting to downplay these concerns by stating that Jeff is cynical and hates most games and alluded to his past game of the year choices. So, there could have been an attempt made to just try to focus people's attention on the content of what he said instead of making ad hominem attacks. However, any consideration of that seemed silly given that there was little meat there to discuss. Gerstmann hadn't actually reviewed the game yet. He had just made a single post on Twitter. As such, the most sensible position for us seemed to be to just caution to shut the fuck up about one fucking tweet and stop derailing the thread.

If Jeff or anyone else from Giant Bomb offers a review or more in-depth commentary about the game, it will of course be allowed to be discussed in here. But the existing conversation was drivel and it centered around vaguely negative commentary that was confined to less than 140 characters of text.

Wasn't the combat system in the original witcher based on the first Neverwinter Game from bioware?

Anyways, can't wait to play this next week.

No. It used the same engine (though prettied up a whole heck of a lot- If you compare the two games side by side, I don't think anyone would blame you for thinking it was another entirely different engine!), but the combat was very different in NWN.

Do we know if Jeff is the one actually reviewing the game? It would be somewhat amusing if the two most likely candidates for GOTY this year (Bloodborne and The Witcher 3) both end up being games he disliked lol.

It's really sad how reviews have shaped our opinions on games. They make me notice so much about a game i wouldn't otherwise. Bulk of the blame is on me for reading into them too much.

At the same time, there's no other way for any us to know ) if the game is worthy of a purchase. Outside of renting or demo, which is rare.

Devs since cleared up how item scaling actually works in the game, read up here; http://www.reddit.com/r/witcher/comments/33feo5/clarification_on_item_scaling_by_damien_monnier/

They have also said that most best gear in the game will be gained through crafting and upgrading them. Doesn't mean items from the caves etc. aren't worthwhile, especially during leveling.

Reviews are great in offering a vast array of opinions to choose from, if you are on the edge on whether you think a game might be for you or not, it's good to do the research before taking that 40-60$ plunge. Whenever I'm on the edge about a game, I tend to read both positive and negative reviews, I want to know what I'm getting into, and I know what I like and don't like about games. Too many use reviews as confirmation bias though instead of a buyers guide, and it turns into the review threads we now know and love today.

You know, the more I look at the new armor, the more I like it.

It's very, um, uh

Which is unique. Reminds me of that old Robin Hood cartoon. Kind of a switch from Witcher 2's Game of Thrones gritaissance although I enjoyed that too quite a lot.

Witcher 2 was in development long before GoT was an idea for a show. But I agree, I like the new armors too.

What's the word on combat in this game? I couldn't get into The Witcher 2 because I felt like I was being pushed into using traps/magic even when I wanted to build my character to be a melee fighter. Does the combat sound better in that regard?

I wonder how this story-line will be continued in my save.
I did Roche his path, so Saskia is still cursed, but I didn't kill her in the end. So she is still alive and being controlled.

Quick question, what does leveling get Geralt aside from raised stats? Is this where we get points to put into one of the four (five?) skill trees? Do we get perks ala Skyrim.

On the bombcast he made it sound like Vinny will be handling the Quick Look, and a review if there is one. He had only played a few hours and decided it wasn't his cup of tea. He doesn't believe it's a bad game by any means, he encouraged Brad and Jason to check it out.

French stream of the PC version with hairworks.

Game is beautiful !

Twitch really has went into "No fucks given about pre-release TW3 streams" even when latest word is that they ban you for it :D Well at least game gets a lot more exposure.

Edit:
Just use the Twitch link. They must've gotten permission from CDPR no? Not sure how the PC version would even launch without it.

Looks like CDPR has greenlit all TW3 streaming.

Hm... so does this mean
that Letho is always dead unless you play on PC with a savegame of 2? I think there was a cameo confirmed, it'd be a shame for it to be that obscure.
