Witcher 3 downgrade arguments in here and nowhere else

False advertising is a ludicrous stretch at the very best. It feels like the onus should more be on you as a videogame fan - someone at least tangentially familiar with the process of how games are made - to recognize that games take a long time to make and have to go through numerous revisions in reaction to an untold number of both outside and internal factors to come to market.

This has been the case since forever, and it's extremely easy to understand why that is the case if you just sit down and think for a moment about the actual process of turning chunks of code into a globally successful product. The final iteration of the Withcher 3 that I have been observing with my own eyes this past week looks utterly amazing, completely within the scope (and often surpassing) what I saw of media from years ago for the game.

Thinking about the normal process of videogame creation as some kind of scandal just seems completely naive and ignorant to me.

Give me the term you would call displaying knowingly unrepresentative footage of the game upon installation of said game? Using said unrepresentative footage in current marketing material for said game. Knowing the footage isn't representative of the game and then not only denying a downgrade happened but promising it will surpass early footage in the face of evidence that proves that is a false statement and was at the time. Because CDPR had no intention of re-adding the technical elements they cut from the game at that point.

It is cute you are trying to blame the victim here for the crimes of the ones knowingly committing the act. The only people the finger should be pointing to for misrepresenting their product is the people misrepresenting their product.

And still trying to argue no downgrade when in just the last page their was an article from a anonymous CDPR developer that confirmed what was downgraded.

I hope so. I mean the textures seem fine, and the lighting does look great at times. To get the sort of lighting and mood the initial reveal had you could probably replicate that with ENB or Reshade or whatever it's called. The only things I can see which are missing are particle effects (grass flying from the left), and realistic smoke (chimneys) .

The smoke still exists. I was watching a stream the other day, and the houses still had smoke coming from the chimneys. Couldn't tell if they were as good as that .gif (twitch and all that).

no, theyre really not. you may think they are, but in the grand scheme of things, all of this faux outrage will not add up to jack shit in the end.

thats why this is all so funny

Well I know I won't preorder any of their future games. I preordered this one based on the good will they created in the past.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks this way.

I'm sure it still exists but was it volumetric smoke like in the gif? or just a toned down version? Makes a hell of a lot of difference!

And you think it won't pay off?
Just compare the reception that the Watchdogs E3 reveal trailer got, and the reception that the AC Syndicate reveal trailer got. As long as the Internet drowns in hypocrisy, the developers aren't going to change their tactics.

Honestly, I appreciated the aliasing ridden trailer for AssSyndicate, still not excited for the game because it just looks AssCreed Cockney edition.

You'd prefer not TOD?

What's TOD? The details over distance?

AC:U buildings can look like shit from far away. Witcher 3 grass looks like shit from far away or close depending on what asset they used (saw the low quality grass from a distance and upclose in the 2013 trailer, posted a screenshot last night).

Yep, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend that I'm okay with it.

Yes, they are. They fucked up. Enjoy the thread.

I went there and took a glance at his channel and was immediately turned off. Full of advertisements, asking for donations, stupid sound effects and logos plastered on the video stream.
It reminded me of why I dislike Twitch now.

I did exactly the same. I was like ughhh and just turned it straight off.

^Do I wish the downgrade issues causes them a headache?

Abso-fucking-lutely. They deserve every lost second of sleep for pulling that scummy shit.

They won't have much credibility going forward either.

Time of day. Typically dynamic transitions. Like seen in GTA5 and Crysis.

Ah right. Immersive lighting beats time of day and flat lighting for me, but yeah that's a hard call if they have to choose, especially with this kind of game.

TOD - Time of Day. Usually used in the context of dynamic lighting. If it is any consolation, the grass in AC:U looks like crap too.

How do you marketing geniuses propose to advertise a game that doesn't exist yet? Would you rather publishers wait until a month from the release day before they show you what the game looks like?

Fuck that. I'm an intelligent consumer that understands the realities of how this stuff is made. I can be trusted to understand that media from a "game in progress" (let alone one that is 2+ years away from completion!) should not be taken as 100% final. The whole thing is even more ridiculous because the final iteration of the game is utterly gorgeous.

It's amazing they even responded to this non-controversy. CDPR has always been a classy company.

TOD is worth it if the engine is good.

Great. Now let us know how you feel about them saying the game was never downgraded.

Quit being intentionally obtuse and deal with the discussion at hand and quit trying to shift blame and intentionally ignore context. Regardless of your opinion on how savvy consumers should be it has no bearing on the culpability of CDPR misrepresenting their product and lying about it. Literally up to the point of installing the game on your computer if posters here are to be believed.

Your arguments sound like a third grader whining and bringing up completely unrelated points that make no logical sense. Scratching and clawing at any excuse they can come up with to deflect guilt.

Slightly better lighting, particle effects and better foliage is all I think that's needed to get the game close to this gif. And I'm no games developer but I would think these 3 things aren't exactly hard to add into the game. It's not like you need hundreds of man hours to create new textures for everything to get it close to the reveal trailer.

I agree. I think eventually the game will look really close to that on PC with mods.

The biggest difference between this GIF and some others from real gameplay that we have seen is the camera angle.

The camera is closer to Geralt giving it a more (*gasp* I'm afraid of using this word) "cinematic feeling", whereas now they are using a more distant camera that makes it feel more "gamey" IMO.

They won't have much credibility going forward either.

Considering the reviews and the amount of pre orders they had I bet they will be fine.

Jesus christ those keyboard controls. Hold alt to dodge? Hold shift for strong attack?
What was wrong with Spacebar and RMB like in TW2?

We should just remove that gif from the internet, or we'll never move on, the game is never gonna look like that, even after 10 mods

Yeah, mods migh make the game better than the console version but it wont look anything like the 2013 trailer.

Even if this pass without consequences (like in From and Dark Souls 2 situation) it don't make it right and should not stop us from pointing the lies and false advertising these companies are doing.

I still hope the media get this, They were very hard on Ubi soft (Watch Dogs downgrade and Unity Parity gate) and it made Ubi soft revelase their newer AC game in a proper way. I really hope sites and guys like Totalbiscuit and Jim Sterling don't give CDPR a free pass here.

LOL, artsi.

Let's see the next time they show off a gameplay video for an upcoming game.

We also have no way of telling how many people preordered counting on the impressive graphics (they pretended we'd have and then defended) to immerse them in the game.

Great. Now let us know how you feel about them saying the game was never downgraded.

Downgraded is a meaningless term, though. It implies there was some set baseline for the game when it was guaranteed to always be in flux. The game was tweaked as it became more content complete. Some 'settings' turned down, others turned up, others the tweaked slightly. This always happens, and it's more pronounced in games like the Witcher 3 that take so long because they're so outrageously full of content and huge.

The game couldn't help but change as they got closer to having millions of people demand (and deserve) a functioning, impressive product. They naturally want to show people what the thing they're working on looks like (also for obvious promotional purposes), so they put out media of the current state of the game and then a month later the game probably looks different in lots of key ways.

You're looking for some sinister narrative here or wanting too badly to feel 'duped' by the evil or incompetent game development company and I find it incredibly strange. The Witcher 3 looks incredible I just don't understand why you guys are fixated on media from a work in progress years ago.

regardless of any downgrades that happened, im willing to bet people will still be impressed by and subsequently immersed in the graphics of the game.

just throwing that out there.

Okay, but there's still a downgrade present.

What are you even getting at? Why are you in this thread if it's all so funny to you?

Yes, it doesn't matter the tech (the guts of the engine) as long it is good to the naked eye.

This has always been my philosophy, it's not like I understand any of the complex calculations going on behind the engine anyhow, and I'm not sure that would affect my enjoyment even if I did. It's all wizards behind curtains to me, the better it looks the more I'll appreciate it.

I do wish more devs could nail Rockstar's TOD from V going forwards however. Almost all times look gorgeous in that game. From what I've read here it seems interiors are a nightmare for TOD lighting. I can see why so many others go for baked when looking at the results in W3.

That's never really been a point of concern. Many who have complained of downgrades have said they're still going to enjoy it. Doesn't stop what could have been though visually

It looks great now. Geralt's hair in the German preview version was bugged (it was fucking old).
