Users and their Avatars

The only thing I get from people's avatars are their interests. Never tried to judge someone or try to figure out their gender based on their avatar.

Weird, I thought your avatar was James Franco this entire time!

Well now you've learned otherwise!

As a reward, here's a MS Paint version of my avatar a gaffer made a year ago, I use it on Steam:

I wish I could remember who made it. :(

If it's optional, i guess any people opting to use it is because they would like to be adressed by their preferred pronouns, so at least there is the chance that people would be treating them better by virtue of adressing them by their chosen identity.

I mean, that's just a perspective to take in concideration as a pro for it, i personally also think it's a bad idea, even if neogaf is pretty progressive about gender issues.

I wouldn't treat posters differently based on their gender. I just don't want to offend someone by calling them the wrong one if I ever refer to them in the third-person. Especially if they're transgender, because I know it's particularly insulting to call a transgender person by the wrong pronoun.

Ah ok, I see what you mean now. Still don't think it's a good idea, but if it's optional like you say, it would be interesting to see how many people would consider it.

If you have or have had a Chris Pratt avatar then I assume you are an annoying 20 year old white male who likes British things.

Looking at my name/avatar, I know what you're all thinking. That guy is TOTALLY into Coke on Pepsi can porn. I just had to make it obvious didn't I?

I'm not good at avatars. I don't think mine represents me very well and I've had it long enough that I don't feel comfortable changing it.

Actually, no, I do judge people if there avatar is lazy. i.e., no/poor cropping, no transparency when it would be easy/make sense to add, nonstandard size, general ugliness, etc.
The actual content of avatars doesn't ever offend me as long as the user clearly put work into it.

Judge mine pretty please, i'd appreciate it!

Well, if you insist...

The coloration is off. The rotation blur effect is kind of weird. The background is lazy and should probably cropped out. The person is way off center, and the weight isn't balanced to accommodate this like in, say, Not's avatar.

I recommend that you take the source picture, crop yourself (?) out, center yourself on a transparent background, then apply the blur effect (if you want), and finally, desaturate it slightly. Then, just resize it into a 120x100 image suitable for transparent GAF avatars.

Yeah, I do, I know I probably shouldn't, but hey, look at my avatar. This picture made me laugh really hard for some reason, if you were to see that stupid thing and come to the conclusion that I'm a really silly stupid guy, you'd be right. I think there's often a reflection of the user in their avatar.

I only wish I could beat up gods with laptops.

My old avatar made people think I was a guy and obessed with anime waifus. Now I'm not sure what people guess.

Anyways I've stopped guessing people's genders based in avatars. You're never right times enough to justify doing it, lol.

Pretty sure people assume I'm a girl by my avatar. I'm probably going to change both avatar and name at some point.

By your (violent) avatar I'd assume you are a guy lol

I think everyone is a guy on GAF. I eventually had to ask a user whose user name was literally a girl name if she was a girl. She was a girl.
